When it comes to family vehicles, the compact SUV segment is the preferred vehicle of choice for millions of Americans. Both the #ToyotaRAV4 and #NissanRogue are consistently at the top of the sales charts. While #Toyota has consistently been number 1 with over 400,000 units of the #RAV4 sold every year, #Nissan has always been either number 2 or 3 with the #Rogue and the latest version gets a new turbo engine under the hood. Today, we find out which of these two is the better option.

Happy Weds everyone! Between these two vehicles, nearly 500,000 people in the US bought one of these crossovers in 2022! 😳 if we added the CR-V, sales would approach 750k! We’re hoping to get a 2023 RAV4 together with a CR-V later this year! Until then, which would you choose between the RAV4 and Rogue??

I'll stick to Nissan. I already have a Rogue Sport, and thanks to God & Nissan's design, even after the HARD hit that crushed my entire passenger side, my R. Sport looks like new (after body work), the crash didn't cause it to topple, it drives like new & I wasn't at all hurt. Other than oil maintenance, even after 2 accidents (the aforementioned bad accident + striking a deer), thank God my Nissan is still reliable. I can't see myself ever switching from Nissan. I don't care about driving fast. I need a durable, safe vehicle & Nissan is all that for me

Great job, Redline Reviews! The current odometer reading on my 2022 RAV4 XLE Hybrid is 3,012 miles. I'm averaging 40 MPG in the city, and 36.2 on limited access highways with cruise control set at 78 MPH. My plan is to keep this vehicle until 2034 or 2035. I am convinced by history that the total cost of ownership for the Nissan Rogue would be much higher within that same time frame.

In Europe we get the X-Trail (Rogue) “E-Power 4orce” which uses this 1.5 VC Turbo only as a generator for two electric motors mounted on the front and real axles, so it’s a Hybrid that works as EV with range extender. I think it’s a quite interesting layout that promises up to 650mi of range on a single tank.

@@michelebicc6983 - I’m sure you’re correct, but I’m skeptical. If you look at the repair histories of standard engines vs. turbo charged engines the differences are drastic. Look at the engine failures of Volvo’s turbocharged 4 cylinder engines and Toyotas new line of turbocharged 6 cylinder engines. The MTBF is 5 times higher in both cases or more in the case of the Tundra for people who are actually towing with it. The load and the additional RPM’s, heat and wear and tear decrease the engines lifespan.

Best-selling car/SUV in America The Rogue, which lost its Rogue Sport model last year, dropped from 285k to 186k, down 35% I love the looks of the Rogue. Both are undeiniably perfect family SUVs. I have a 2021 RAV4 LE AWD, and I absolutely love it~ It's comfortable, it's very roomy, it's very easy to drive, and most importantly, that 2.5L 4 cylinder is even more efficient than the previous generation RAV4 that I had, which was a 2017 model, which was still very good in terms of fuel, but this 8-speed automatic drastically improves that compared to the 6-speed automatic in the previous generation. The Rogue is just as good as the RAV4, but that CVT transmission is something that may hinder my opinion of it, because I'm more used to a conventional automatic transmission, but can't deny that Nissan made great updates to this car and drives just as well. My dad drove the previous generation Rogue when we went on a trip to California as a rental car, and that car was really good (although I'm sad that someone smashed the passenger window and tried to steal something from that car).

Since I very sadly totaled my beloved Accord (minus the hard seats) hitting a deer, I had plenty of time to look for a new car waiting for insurance. Anyone who knew me knew I was getting another Honda without question but this time a CRV. My husband and I test drove the CRV and just as the Accord… the seats were hard as concrete. Went on to test out the Rav 4 and the seats are very comfortable and we loved driving it. However, if you have a tall family with myself being the shortest at 5’9” ish there just isn’t enough room in the back. Especially for my husband and boys who are 6’2” and 6’3”. Decided on the Rogue and couldn’t be happier. We were going for comfort, gas mileage and AWD. It hit all the marks. Seriously surprised with the luxurious driving experience so if this is what you are looking for, you will not be disappointed.

On the rogue 2023, you do not get the rear shelf compartments. Those are neat in that you can move them to a higher level or even take one and place it sideways to divide the two floor compartments. Or slide one in the top for a half shelf. You can place a large stroller on the shelf allowing full space below for other things and not having to take out the stroller every time to get to other things. Or you can place the stroller sidways in the half compartment. It is also great to keep groceries or items from flying around the cargo space. no reviews seem to show this. HOWEVER- it is NOT AVAILABLE on the 2023 rogue. Instead you get a cargo space like the Rav4 but you do get a floating console that is great to put your purse rather than on the seat or by passengers feet. I wish the 2023 had both because I love both features. and I love the toyota's passenger shelf.

The Rogue has one major advantage over the Rav4 and the CRV...AVAILABILITY! I live in a city of about 250,000 and the Toyota and Honda dealers have almost ZERO new inventory. The Toyota dealer is overflowing with with overpriced used cars and the Honda dealer has very few used cars. Neither dealership was very helpful either...get in line was the response from both dealers, nor did they have demonstrators to test drive. Of course, I went with the Rogue and I am VERY happy with it. I'm puzzled by KZfaq reviewers giving negative reviews to the Rogue. I have found it to be an excellent vehicle. I’ve been shopping around, looking at the new Honda CRV hybrid, Toyota Rav 4 hybrid and Nissan Rogue. I can’t make up my mind on which one to purchase. The interior and handling award goes to Nissan. I do not like the body shape or the interior of the Toyota but it wins the award for best fuel economy. I presently own a 2010 Honda CRV and over the years I put only $1000 worth of repairs into it, so with my positive experience I might just play things safe and buy another Honda.

Toyota for some reason is very conservative in interior designs. Some competitors like Kia and Hyundai, sort of straddle the line between budget and luxury. Toyota stays on the budget side of things. But they have a brand reputation for reliability, durability and cheap maintenance and repairs. That carries the day for them.

Nissan drives better and is built better. I've tested both, and I'd never recommend the Rav to anyone (and I do judge anyone who has one--- previous model Rav was WAY better). If you can stomach taking a chance on Hyundai engines and warranties, the Santa Fe drives better than both (and also completely outclasses the Rav4).

Great review. We went with Nissan rogue because they had cars to sell and actually went below sticker. Toyota in the midwest is still charging above msrp which makes the nissan a better price. Plus Toyota dealers don't have a lot to choose from.

Just picked up my midnight edition today. Its hands down the smoothest ride ive ever had. They seemed to have fixed the cvt lagging issue bc i didn’t notice any lagging. Especially once i switched it into sport mode. The horsepower is stronger than all its counterparts, and the cabin is silent. The inside feels so luxurious. Id never look back. I had a Nissan Qashqai new from 2017. CVT was horrible & had issues fixed under warranty (rear axle squeaking, disc brake changed from squelling when braking & Bluetooth issue on the "infotainment" system). Battery also died after 2 years due to a poor AGM battery they use. The Renault partnership wasn't good imo

There are plenty of Rogues in rental fleets right now, various trims, including fully loaded Platinums w/ Premium package as well. I rented a 2023 SV Midnight AWD last week, and I have to say, I liked the previous 2.5L N/A motor much more. While you notice extra hp, the power delivery, noise, and no noticeable mpg gains over the 2.5 don't make me to choose it over the rest of the segment, especially when it comes to MSRP level. At least this motor doesn't generate any vibrations. In the 1.5T department, when it comes to driving and powertrain feel, I would place it like this: Bronco Sport (3cyl) > CR-V (4cyl) > Rogue (3cyl) > Taos (4cyl) What would make me choose this over other entries in the segment however, are the availability on the dealer lots, and potential incentives. Thankfully I am not in the market to buy any SUV 😉 So between a pedestrian Rogue, and an agrarian Rav4 I would prefer a Tiguan or an Outback.

Here is a great reason to buy a 2023 Nissan Rogue over a Rav4 Hybrid: 1) There are a TON of Rogues on the lots, whereas hybrid allocations are tiny. 2) In my city you can get a Rogue for a couple hundred bucks under MSRP, whereas Rav 4 hybrids (not the gas ones) are still considerably marked up. 3) The markups on the Rav4 hybrids destroys the extra economy 4) Real world if you drive chill you can get mid 30s without any effort, my highest so far is 39.2mpg on the '23 Rogue.

Toyota has the ugliest interior and least standard equipment of ANY crossover/suv in the market today. Nissan had the best interior between these two hands down. The only positive to the RAV4 is the long term reliability as Nissan’s VCV transmission isn’t known to last past 100k miles. If you only need a vehicle for 2-4 yrs within the warranty period then buy the Rogue because it’s easier to live with for ride quality, noise insulation, overall material quality and comfort. Obviously you won’t get 200k miles without having to rebuild or replace the cvt transmission of the Rogue.
