This makes sense... I've watched so many machine applique videos...and you are the first one that mentions sewing around individual pieces! All of the other ones I've watched positioned (or fused) everything down...and made it look so difficult to stitch around....especially if I wanted to blanket stitch and change thread colors. Thanks for this (probably obvious to you) but new to me, tip! 🙂

I am so glad it was helpful! I often find things glossed over in other videos and they leave me with so many questions. So I try to be as clear as I can!

Superbly explained. I have always enjoyed appliqué, but in the past have given up with seem allowance and reverted to raw edge snd blanket stitch. I am now ready to try again. Thank you so much..

I saw another interesting way to create appliqué pieces. I think it was Jenny Doan of MSQC. She cut two of the template shapes with the quarter inch allowance, then traced the seam line on one of the wrong sides. She then sewed them together around the seam line, left a hole, turned, and pressed. Clever!

Yes, that's interesting. Lori Holt does a similar method with interfacing.

Thanks for this tutorial! Is your thread just normal white thread that you would piece blocks with?

Yes, it is! You could color match if you wanted to also.

After you applique the pieces onto the background fabric, do you ever cut the background fabric away from under the applique pieces or do you always leave the background fabric in. I was wondering because I was taught to trim the background fabric away from the back of the appliqued piece. If your hand quilting it makes it easier to quilt through. I guess if you are machine quilting, it probably doesn't matter. Thank you for the wonderful tutorial.

I don't but yes, I image if you are hand quilting, it might be easier to go though. However, I do think you can go through both layers if hand quilting too.

When I've done this method, my iron had some starch residue on the plate afterwards, I've cleaned it with some water but is there another way of cleaning the iron after, or will my iron get ruined with time? ❤

Your iron manufacturer should have recommendations on cleaning the plate. I'm not sure if they are all done the same way because each plate could be made of different material. So, I would check you specific iron manufacturer's instructions. In general though, I have read that you can use a mix of water and vinegar to clean the iron plate when it is off, unplugged, and fully cooled.
