ZF transmissions are super good. Ford used them on their 6 speed auto falcons in the late 00s, early 2010s. Handles high hp and torque, anyone with a barra knows they can make 1000nm of torque with just a boost and tune. ZF manual in a supra isnt all bad. Getrag trans which is also used by BMW is also found in the MK4 supra and R34 GTR, and guess what, is also German. Good bit of kit.

@@revmatchtv i disagree about the 86 shift quality being close to the s2000. I currently own a first gen BRZ and i think its alright. But when i tried a friends S2000, it was night and day. S2000 transmission felt solid, smooth, mechanical, and super precise. The BRZ shifter whilst smooth, is much less solid and tends to have a tiny bit of slop/flex. It gets worse as the transmission heats up on a hot day and it starts to feel much less precise.

The 8HP looks to be good to about 650 lbft to the wheels in the Supra. Maybe a little more with a trans tune and added line pressure. No clue about the GS6, but the M3/M4 seem to be holding up alright so far!

Based off other 6 speed bmws this transmission should not have ANY issues with whatever power 95% of the people will push. Once you go into the 700lbft and above you will definitely need a built block and if you got the money for that you will have the money for the upgraded tranny too.

Great video and content. I'd have to disagree with you on the shifter. I just got my 2023 Supra premium with the Manual transmission. Is it possible you got a preproduction model with an early shifter. It's now April 2023 and I have waited 7 months for my Supra. I thought the shifter on my Supra was very precise with short throws. It's very notchy and shifts very smoothly. It reminded me of the shifter on my 2009 Honda S2000 CR. Only the Honda CR had just a tad shorter throws. I like the display on the gauges telling you exactly which gear you are in. I know it sounds a little silly but sometimes we all have missed a shift only to find the wrong gear. The clutch is very soft and smooth and can easily be used as a daily driver. This was a nice surprise having such a soft clutch given the amount of power the engine makes. The take up is low down the way I like it. This Supra is one of the very best cars I have ever driven and I've owned more than 50 cars in my lifetime.

@@franciscodiaz6290 not really if you know 30% of your customers want something you don’t just flat out ignore it with 60k 86/brz sales 18k of your customers want manual it’s bad business to have that many unhappy customers. if it was 5% it would be understandable, but manual car enthusiasts are still a large portion of sales.

Toyota pulled an Apple: little-by-little annual progression. Why give the people what they want immediately when they can test the waters on its success for a few years and then eventually release a manual if the demand warrants a manual (which they were all but certain that many enthusiasts would certainly want the option)

The Drive once said the code for the gearbox is GS6L50TZ, I also check today's press release and Toyota updated spec sheet on the website, it didnt provide any info on gearing yet. just wondering if you got the info from toyota officially ?

Apologies if the answer is in the video as im commenting before finishing, but I really want to know if the Supra’s shift rod is the same BMW friction/pop style shift knob mounting as all other manual BMWs? I’d assume it must be yes? I really like the A91 alcantara shift knob and would love to have it for my E46 if it just fits on same as factory style BMW knobs! :)

Wow!! Thank you for this video. So pretty much is the same gearbox and gear ratios found in the M cars, and the same ring to pinion ratio. Just with a different clutch and weighted shifter. But yet toyota is claiming it was designed from the ground up just for the supra. Crazy! ...that explains the No additional cost for the manual. I mean it's great, but be honest. Great video! Just subed!

To put it in perspective for a buyer of a manual, how tall are you where you feel that the clutch pedal travel is too far that causes the seating position to change? When I had my auto Supra, it felt great. I'm 6'1, so wondering how tall you are and how it affects seating distance.

I an 5' 9", and I just bought a manual MKV, and drove many automatics, and honestly I dont really feel what he is talking about. My seating position is as relaxed in my manual as it was in all the autos, and I do not hit my arm on the seat bolster as I shift.

In your opinion, has the bump steer issue been corrected (working on suspension angles/stiffness), or it’s up to these revised traction controls to make up for the sometimes unpredictable behavior of the car? Anyway, great insights, thanks!

Honestly, I think the bump steer issue was blown up way out of proportion. Rear toe alignment out the factory was almost always crap (thanks Magna), but with good alignment specs, the car is plenty stable. My Supra is super progressive, with no suspension modifications, just alignment and tires. Only issue is that it makes way too much torque. In general the car likes to rotate, but that's largely the wheelbase to track width ratio and you just need to drive with that in mind. Increase the track width if you want to add a little stability and its a lot easier for novice drivers.

Simpler than a lot of people think. In a month or two of practice, you'll have it down. Go pick up a beater with good fuel economy that has a manual gearbox, you'll love it.

I have had my 2023 Supra A91 6MT for 3 weeks now and I have NEVER hit my elbow going into 4th gear or what ever it was you guys experienced and I'm neither short or tall at 5' 10". My only complain in the 2023 Manual is that it's missing Android auto for us non iphone users.

Believe it or not i find it a little better to be a little closer to the steering wheel if the clutch is like that. You get a better view of the front of the car so you’ll have a better point of view of how close you are to things where as in your cruising laid back position. I think it’s a pro

the supra being released in manual is a classic example on why ill never buy first or second production year of a car. You always get early adopter taxed and either screwed out of some feature you wanted, or the car has a critical design flaw and recall. 2013 and early 2014 brz's with the valve spring recall, or 2013 and 2014 tesla model S's having the a/c condenser drain right above the battery pack so water drips ontop of the battery and works its way in and bricks the car because of corrosion. Theres so many more examples, those were just the first 2 that came to mind

No rubberiness or vagueness at all - after that DIRECT example (direct as in I own it and specifically know the gear change), there's the Type R and manual boxes from Porsche ----------- Summary; most, NOT all

2022 Supra owner here. This has been my experience: I’m gonna be completely honest, if you’re looking into the GR Supra (which you should, it’s an amazing car) even if youre a manual enthusiast, consider the auto. The ZF 8 Speed is an incredible package and from my experience outmatched the driving feel of the 2016 M2 DCT that I cross-shopped. There is almost no delay in shift response during spirited driving, and this was something I was keen on when looking for a sports car with a good Auto or DCT box since my clutch leg has medical issues and I sadly had to sell my manual C6 Corvette. Ignore the BMW thing now, it’s ancient history and at this point is irrelevant to the car’s capabilities. It’s quick, it’s refined, and probably the best sports car out there for under 55k save for the Camaro SS 1LE, whose visibility issues drove me away.

Long story turned short: Toyota took BMW’s manual gearbox, custom made their own “short shifter” (that’s basically any aftermarket short shifter you can get in a BMW), threw it in, took already known BMW aftermarket clutch designs, threw it in, and then called it their “own” 🤣. The end

In this specific case, I would prefer the automatic, paradoxically. In order to enjoy the manual, the controls have to be laid out perfectly, which isn't this case.

Any car over $30k you gotta have a big wallet for. Most enthusiast can only afford sub30k cars. Thats why alot of people talk about cars like the Supra, GTR, or others and cant afford to buy it, hence the low sales volume. Its just not practical for someone with a steady job, a small family, with 1-2 kids. Now if that person makes over $100k a year then thats another issue. But then again, they would rather invest or stash away the cash for the future, instead of spend on a weekend car where they will only drive a couple of times a week.

Couldn’t imagine anyone making fun of a BMW built to Toyota standards. As a Toyota fanboy and former owner of 2 BMWs. The funnest cars I’ve driven out of the dozen I’ve owned. BMW was easiest the funnest of all to drive and felt so good. I just didn’t like the reliability as I repaired a “sealed” tranny. I live in Cali. So, I vowed never to buy a BMW like car again. And then I seen the Supra. I’m just waiting til I can afford one comfortably afford one, and I’m getting one. Disliking this car because if the Colab with BMW is just stupid.

I admire the GR team’s efforts at Toyota, although I personally find both the GR 86 and new Supra to exude toylike qualities that just don’t excite me, their Lexus Products such as the LFA and LC500 are incredible. That’s where the true talent and vision lies at Toyota…In the Lexus division.

update : The GR Yaris stopped it's sale. I wish I had one, If you dare me to choose the GR Yaris and the Supra, I'd pick the GR Yaris, it's my all time dream car. I'm so sad it's gone

BMW parts, Toyota design. From a jdm/ toyota purist standpoint this is only half the car we ever wanted but after driving and owning manual transmissions from both brands i can at least respect the machine that it is now, but i would still buy the nissan Z over this, the somewhat less expensive car that is purely designed & engineered from a single source, not multiple brands. Same problem I have with the GR86 but can still at least like the machines for what they are.

Yeah agreed, the new Z is going to be the last great real JDM ICE legend. I'm planning on getting a Base model and throwing the Performance/Zupra price difference at it to get the LSD, exhaust, suspension, and tune I want. It's like Nissan said, "Here's a good looking JDM car with a great chassis and engine for less than half the cost of a GT-R, have at it aftermarket!".

The whole engine and driveline is BMW, except for the Torsen diff centre. Why go to the expense of reinventing something that you can buy off the shelf thats even better.

Bmw isn't exactly known for their reliability. Don't get me wrong they make amazing cars and the B58 is a beast.. supra enthusiast just wish it was all toyota or atleast majority toyota. Instead everything is bmw. The infotainment system, the open door chime, the vin#, literally 90% of the car is bmw. Dead honest, if the car didn't carry the supra nameplate then majority of the people wouldn't have one negative thing to say about the car

Most BMW's after 2005 or so are absolutely junk after they hit 60k miles. They are probably the least reliable German brand made and that is saying something. If you want one lease it or you will be stuck with something that depreciates as fast as a Range Rover.

Good job BMW for having the parts bin for Toyota to pick from, and Nissan for bringing the Z35 to market. It's like the R34 version of the Z line, similar chassis to the other Z cars before it but much improved, with a good manual, I just wish they would bring the CD009 back!
