I’m very happy to see Suzuki making a truly ALL NEW motorcycle not just a totally new model but also a new Engine with new Electronics suspension frame etc.. I hope they continue to make more strides like this again because Suzuki is a great company that has a lot to contribute and this hiatus they’ve been on has been frustrating to say the least!

I rode the 8S and Hornet back to back yesterday, with an open mind. It was a revelation - the 8S was, in my opinion, by far the better bike. Smoother, more mid range, more room, more comfortable. I preferred the TFT on the 8S - less crowded and clearer than the Hornet's screen. The quickshifter worked better on downshifts. Three things I didn't like - the lack of LED indicators (why put yesterday's technology on tomorrow's bike?), the odd position of the tail/stop light (surely it would have been neater on the rear of the seat unit?) and the fact that a USB socket was an optional extra, at a staggering £46 - I just hate being fleeced. That aside, is it worth £1000 more than the Honda? For me, the answer is yes. It's good that a quickshifter is included as standard, but it's annoying to be asked to pay extra for a USB socket and LED flashers.....irritating potential customers isn't a great way to start, Suzuki!

Did you change around the dash on the Hornet? I think Honda also specifically engineered the Hornet to be a more top end focused revving bike, which would explain the lackier midrange.

"more mid range," Maybe because on paper the GSX achive the peak torque earlier then the Hornet.

The most attractive bike in its class. I like the idea of low-down shove as opposed to top-end power. It's what you use most often. Nice TFT. I like to see a bike ridden normally. Most people ride like this. It gives you a real idea of what the bike is like. A 1050cc version of this would be something. I did this road on my old R1100GS years ago. They certainly are sheer drops.

The gsx s1000 is the 1L version of this. And in my opinion the better option. Way more hp and torque at your fingertips and an incredible ride all around! Own a 2023 black gsx S1000

@@DasChristoff I think if he argues "like the idea of low down shove as opposed to top end power" he means that he doesn't need 150hp because it's unusable on the streets (without being unresponsible fast). I think the gsxs1k looks alot better. But I too would never get one because I have a hard time using all my gears on my cb500f which has 1/3 of the powe the gsxs has? My second gear does 90kmh, pop it to 3rd and I'm done on the backroads, what do you need 150hp for, you know? But then this wouldn't make sense with the bit that he would like to see a 1050 (for what ever reason 1000cc is not enough).
@ewganhoff
@ewganhoff Жыл бұрын
@@Daniel-dj7fh I’ve never owned a bike as fast as the gsx1000, but I have owned bikes with around 100hp and I did use all the gears and all the revs on a regular basis. I don’t consider breaking the speed limit to be irresponsible, I consider riding too fast for the conditions to be irresponsible. Sometimes going 120mph on a road with a 60 limit is fine just like 40mph can be too fast in a 60 depending on the road and conditions.
@DoctorStrange01
@DoctorStrange01 10 ай бұрын
@@DasChristoff Dude you don't need "way more hp and torque" to ride 80-140 km/h, lol. It's not the better option. 8S can still achieve speeds you don't need to reach, nor you should on a public road, and the torque is enough to kill yourself anyway :)

I saw this bike at the dealer yesterday and I was impressed how it looks and feels. Really a quality machine for the money. When I sat on it the bike felt very roomy and comfy (I'm 187 cm), way better than the Honda Hornet which I tried also. I haven't ridden the 8s, but my first impression is that this bike offers high build quality for the money. I was really impressed yesterday by this bike which I wasn't expecting on forehand to be honest. Well done Suzuki.

Dan goes '50 pence-ing it' in the Sarf of France - I love it! Don't believe the hype about tyres being 'specially developed' for a bike. What it means is that the has done a deal with the to supply thousands of tyres at the best price. Particularly with Japanese Dunlops, the OEM compound is usually different (harder, less sticky) than the same tyre bought as a replacement, which is why they inevitably get changed asap. If you watch MotoBob's review of the 790 Duke, the GSX-8S is amazing value & isn't made to a price in China.

Very nice review. It seems like a decent offering & probably my favourite in the category overall. Despite possibly not being the best in any one area, it seems like a great all round package. Seemingly better than the MT07 & Z650, more style & class than the Hornet (imo). Plus it comes with a standard QS, bigger brakes & rear tyre over the Hornet too. It's also presumably more reliable & definitely has a larger dealer network than the KTM, is cheaper than a Tuono (which I love) & comparable to the classy Trident & the nice CB650R. Suzuki's new 7 year / 70,000 mile warranty is also a big appeal for me too. Although test ride required for sure to see how the suspension copes with our ropey roads.
@J2I3H

@@J2I3H Yes agreed. The Aprilia's weren't great when they first came out but are supposedly better now? Either way though it's a significantly more expensive & risky purchase as it's never going to be more reliable than the Suzuki. Forgot about the XSR700 but not my thing styling wise.

What I'm concerned about is the fuel economy. The Hornet consumes much less than this bike (~50mpg > 38mpg), and it has a bigger tank too (15.2l > 14l). Realistically as normal riders, we can achieve more on the 8S than that of those journos, but remember that both stats are measured in testing condition, so for us average riders the Hornet is still much better on fuel.
@ragerider6283
@ragerider6283 Жыл бұрын
@@gsm_liv8980 Suzuki claim 67mpg ( I'm dubious) but if you like the Hornet, it has a bigger tank & supposedly better fuel economy, then get that if it suits your needs better. They're both decent bikes & you can't go wrong with either.

@Salvo Spedale I haven't ridden either bike, have you ridden both? Looks are subjective, so I can hardly be wrong about my personal preference for the style of the Suzuki. From reviews I have watched, the Hornet can be pretty cramped for a larger rider, where the Suzuki is more accommodating. Price difference is somewhat offset by the fact that a quickshifter is standard on the Suzuki and extra on the Honda. I also don't love the skinny bicycle-looking rear tire on the Honda. Superior in all respects? Nope. Heck of a bike all the same.

I like the digital ammeter readout but don't think there's many folk who wouldn't swap a quickshifter for the fitment of braided hoses as standard. I personally can't stand a spongy feel to front brakes. This seems like a pretty decent bike but may struggle against the Honda Hornet. Isn't it about a grand more expensive ? I must say, as a bloke who's your height and has the same inside leg measurement, but a pretty light 9 stone 3 lbs undressed, it makes a change to see a bike with a rear shock that wouldn't be so hard as to be rocketing me off the seat a lot of the time, even over small bumps. Had to have my own bike resprung with a lighter spring, as it had been aggravating my cervical myelopathy something awful, even when totally backed off.

Had test rides on both hornet and GSX8S, hornet is great bike for the money the one tested had a quick shifter which was a bit jerky but that could have been me, was very flickable, lighter and more power but no quick shifter as standard. Gsx8 is heavier although you don’t notice it, quick shifter seemed smoother and pull from low rpm was smoothe. I am older rider 6ft tall 32 inside leg and gsx8 fits me perfect, I’ve ordered white one and can’t wait.

Another great review, thanks. How does the handling compare with the older GSX S750? Is the 8S an apex predator? The 8S will retail for the equivalent of Stg 8,500 here. They are still selling the old GSX S750s for Stg6,370. So that is a 33% premium for new looks, the tech and 32 less BHP. Is the 8S 33% more fun?

Nice bike. I really want to test ride one. what a beautiful place for a bike launch, I really want to see comparisons with the Honda Hornet and and also the Trident with similar HP. that road you are test riding on is like some of the canyons in California where if you mess up you either go into a rock cliff that will turn you into hamburger or you go off in the other direction and you are down a steep mountain side or off a cliff. either way you are screwed. I heard in another video that one of the test riders went down. I hope they are ok. I am really curious about the ride of this bike compared to the Hornet considering its over a grand more money. is there something about the bike that justifies that price difference considering that the Honda is 90HP. which is more than the 83 of the GSX8s. and the Honda is also lighter, is the GSX8s maybe more stable and confident inspiring ? better fit and finish ? I am looking forward to finding out in some comparison videos. hopefully someone makes a good one. I do like the looks of the Suzuki more than the Hornet. but I'm not sure that justifies the price difference.

4:00. FortNine has an important video about balancing called "Why Millions of People Ride Harley Davidsons," on their KZfaq channe, where Ryan explains that you don't actually need the balance shaft that balances the crankshaft front to back, because when you vibrate the engine front to back (like what happens in a Harley with a single crankpin engine) the vibration is absorbed totally when you're at speed and rolling, because the vibration is merged into the forward motion of the motorcycle so it mostly totally dissipates once you're moving. It's the up and down vibration which is the problem, and it seems like Suzuki might have messed up by trying to balance all the axis of the engine simultaneously, and not succeeding to balance the up and down vibration properly in the meat of the power band where the bike spends most of it's time. The balance shafts themselves, probably create their own harmonics at certain speeds, which would explain the buzz. The 2nd Gen Hayabusa is very smooth above 2,700 rpms, and never gets any rough buzzing, only a faint vibration that you can barely feel. and it's a huge motor and only has one single counterbalancer. The ZX-14 is apparently glass smooth, smoother than the Hayabusa, and has twin counterbalancers and it's a 1440cc engine. A parallel twin should be a bit easier to balance, as the harmonics should be less complex than a 4 cylinder, but the 270 degree crank might be a totally new design for Suzuki in their entire history as a motorcycle company. I expect that they will redesign the balance shafts and tuning in future iterations, and you'll see that buzzing disapear. They might also change the gearing, a higher gear would solve the problem faster than redesigning the engine. Modern motorcycles are notoriously geared too low.

I like Fortnine. But I'm sure Suzuki engineers, who've been in the game for decades, know what they are doing.
@GIGABACHI
@GIGABACHI Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure that bottom balancer makes the whole engine architecture more awkward than it had to be. A Parallel Twin by nature it's tall, having a balancer in the oil pan pretty sure doesn't make it any shorter. Sometimes engineers have "too many choices" and end up putting together a shitty mix of parts and mechanical theories that don't make anyone happy other than themselves. But hey ! At least they are still trying to look like they haven't shit the bed for good. 💀 Let's see how much longer they can keep their charade of being the Walmart of motorcycles.

Suzuki were once THE manufacturer for sports bikes and when they announced a new model the other three of the Japanese big four worried, they brought us revolutionary bikes like the X7, GS750, GS1000, RG500, XN85, GSX-R750, 600 Bandit and SV650 but now the whole GSX-R range is no more and Suzuki don't have a single leader in any category. as someone who's owned eight Suzuki's from the RGV250, RG500 through all the GSX-Rs up to the 1000R it really saddens me to see the company at rock bottom and the GSX-8S won't raise them any higher, it's much heavier than every other budget naked middleweight and up to £1,000 dearer so why would anyone choose it over the Hornet or KTM790, it's obvious Suzuki are pulling out of making bikes (they've already pulled out of MotoGP, WSBK and every international series) so just pull the plug now rather than this long lingering death and leave us with the memories of the great bikes they once made.

@@Englishbikerdan They've shown that bikes are now a tiny part of the company and have gone from one of the market leaders to rock bottom with no flagship, unlike Honda and Yamaha who have something in every category that competes with the best, name a Suzuki that does, this is their first new bike in years and IMO not one to blow away their rivals. even relatively small companies like Triumph are producing great bikes like the latest Street triple that are market leaders.
