Great commuting test, probably the best enthusiast one car solution. 30mpg is good for AWD 300hp. My daily ND miata is gets the EPA rated 27city/34fwy/30combined which is good for RWD. Usually get 32-33 overall, can get 39 highway if driving under 3k rpm. Looking at trading for a GR Corolla or getting a SUV as my weekend family car

You can adjust the Radar Cruise control and adjust how hard it brakes and accelerates. I've filled up my GR Corolla 4 times now and have averaged 30 mpg every tank with highway and city driving. When I've been cruising at 60 mpg I see about 32-33 mpg and at 70-75 mph I see around 30 mpg. I find it very comfortable on the road too. I do find the speedometer off around 3 mph fast at highway speeds.

Small engine, designed to operate at high rpm’s, peak torque occurs at a higher rev range, unlike bigger low revving engines, can’t cruise at 70 mph at 3k because they probably redline at 5k and at 3k they are a lot closer to their peak torque as opposed to a 1.6 liter THREE CYLINDER ENGINE!

It's a 1.6L engine. Most engines in testing are their most efficient between 40-60% of redline rpm. Go back in time to 4 speed manual Toyota Starlets that screamed at 4500 rpm on the highway but got 40 mpg. Small engine, higher revs. It's all good 👍

My 2011 subaru legacy 3.6R has a ancient 5 speed and a 3.6L boxer 6 engine, awd and is much longer and wider than the corolla and will consistantly get 29mpg on the highway. I have a question regarding the size of this engine and fuel economy. Seeing that it is such a tiny engine ,only 3 cylinders, and yet, the fuel economy is nothing special. What benefit does it provide over a bigger engine which would easily make the same horsepower and provide same fuel efficiency. you can get a 2.0 liter turbo or even a v6 and they would easily make 300 hp and return 30mpg give or take on the highway

The 3cyl was built for Yaris and Toyota put it in the GR Corolla and building a small engine costs less. Civic type r has a 2L I4 with extra hp and gets the same mpg but non-sport cars now with I4 engines get high 30’s to 40’s mpg better than V6.

It was originally built for rally racing in the Yaris where there are either engine size/cylinder requirements. If not that, then a smaller engine just weighs less which helps with performance. They just decided to convert the race engine for street use so here we are with a 3 cylinder in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla.

It's lighter and smaller than a 4cyl. That makes it easier to work on. It is easier and cheaper to manufacture. Awd with any motor will reduce fuel mileage a lot. I don't believe a 4cyl would get better mpg on the same awd setup but who knows

You’re right in that the fuel economy wouldn’t be the primary consideration for such a vehicle, but that doesn’t mean prospective buyers will not want to know if it’s economical to run of it the mpg rating is bunk.
