Thank you very much for making this video. Are the orange wire that goes through the middle of the floor and the other wire there for the AWD system or do all 2024 Prius have those wires in those spots? Also, could these same parts be used to install a spare tire in the trunk of a Corolla hybrid?

@scottdean27, The orange is high voltage for AWD, I believe the non AWD don’t have these wires. I would assume that these parts won’t be a similar/good fit to a Corolla. Thanks for replying and sharing that information. It is very helpful. I am trying to be as prepared as possible to make a quick decision between a new Prius and a new Corolla hybrid for whenever my current Toyota hybrid needs a big repair. But hopefully my car keeps on reliably running on down the roads for years to come, even though I have definitely gotten my money’s worth from it over the last 11 years.

⁠No worries! I upgraded from a 13’ Corolla and what tipped the scales to the Prius for me was the AWD in a higher trim. When I was looking it seemed only the LE Corolla trims offered an AWD in the states. Good luck and don’t pay any insane dealer markups if you can avoid it…

Read this link to LATimes article regarding issue of "no spare tire". Very informative and explains issues that we, with no spare tire, have pondered. (oops link will not paste. Article appeared in August 18, 2023 issue.) I was left stranded without a spare tire in my 2023 Prius XLE. I love the car, but detest the cost scrimping by Toyota. Additionally, being stranded at night with a unrepairable tire and no spare will not occur again. I will install a spare tire and forward the bill to Toyota!! Of course I do not expect any response. But, if enough customers complain, just maybe, we'll get their attention. Thank you for this comprehensive video.

Just installed this in a 2024 XLE. Thank you for putting this video together! Last winter I hit a pothole that slashed the tire and I couldn’t repair it. I feel a LOT better having a spare should anything happen again!

Thank you so much! I didn’t understand the $7 item purchased at tire store. I haven’t received my 2024 XLE AWD yet and I’m already nervous about not having a spare. I’ve been waiting over a week for a replacement tire for my 2009. At least I can drive to the grocery store with my spare. Plus I just searched online and tires for one of the two available 2024 Prius 19” tires are back ordered for 60 days. I have no back up plan and can’t imagine needing to wait 60 days for a replacement!

Oh that 7 bucks was for them to install the tire on the wheel with a valve stem and pump it up. Enjoy your XLE AWD! I am loving mine.

@@prag-o-matic Thanks. I just priced everything not including the tire and it’s about $900. $104 for the wheel. Does that sound about right? My local dealer is less expensive than others but I’m wondering if there is a less expensive way to purchase OEM parts. I know some people cut cost by cutting into the original styrofoam storage pieces instead of buying the new properly shaped styrofoam parts but I’m not sure that would work for me. I’ve been waiting a long time after rejecting a 2022 and the first 2023 that came in for me. The dealership seems to have more access to Primes.

@@FM-ij7iuA lot of the cost is in replacing the styrofoam blocks. I just saw somewhere, that a guy simply sawed the stock styrofoam pieces to fit the tire. Saves a couple hundred right there.

Have you measured or known if anyone tried to see if a full size spare could fit with this setup? In the video it looks like there’s maybe an inch of play on either side and made me wonder if it could accommodate a full sized spare? Thank you!

Thank You for the informative video. When you secure the compact spare tire/wheel in between the left and right foam inserts, does both the top of the tire and the top of the wheel aligned flush with the top of the foam inserts? Or, is there a gap there?

On the left and right sides it is pretty much flush to the top of the foam, there is only about ~.25" of gap. There is more gap on the top and bottom. There is also about an inch gap all around the diameter from touching the white inserts. If you are trying to fit something bigger you may be able to modify the bottom foam a bit to get more room.

@@prag-o-matic Sorry, I wasn't clear on my original question... Do you mean the secured tire/wheel sits approximately 0.25" lower than the top of the foam inserts on left & right, and even lower than that on the top and bottom sides...? Or, 0.25" higher?

This tire is close enough to work for both. The official Toyota user manuals call this size out and it’s the same for 17” or the 19” wheels in that manual.

Have 2023 prime bought a full size 19" rim with goofy 195R19 tire as a spare. To my surprise it doesnt fit even with the foam gone due to the battery charger aparatus and a large hump in the center where yours is flat. Am going to have to strap it in rear cargo area 😂

09105-47020 is the Toyota part number I used for the jack assembly and tools in this video, was about ~80 bucks and you can buy straight from the Toyota parts site. Yeah you will follow the same process for a limited AWD.

Can you confirm the part you used for the jack kit that fit in this model? The part number in the description as different than the one listed by Hammersmith for the XLE and I just want to make sure I order the right one. For some reason one is $83 and the other is $342. Thanks again for sharing this though - I’m 100% doing this mod & really wish it came with a spare!

The only difference is the packaging, hammersmith bought the one with a nice bag. I used 09105-47020 for the video and was the cheapest option and comes with a small bag that I ended up tossing. But yes, everything fit well into the white styrofoam parts.

I don’t see why not, I think the metal shield is for AWD only so you may not need to purchase that part or the 3 small nuts. If you want to play it safe you could pull everything out when you take delivery and verify it has the tapped hole to secure the tire down before you order. Please let us know what you see and if it works and congrats on the new car!

@@prag-o-maticI appreciate you getting back to me so quickly. When I search the part numbers on the Toyota site, many come up as compatible for the 2023 but not the ‘24. I really doubt there is a difference however and assume the site is just not completely updated. Finding a Limited FWD anywhere near me proved impossible so I am driving 9 hours each way to get it. You have done me and others a great service with your video and research.

I have a question: is this just a collection of parts that you curated or is this something that Toyota has available for this purpose? I have a Corolla Cross, which sadly lacks a spare tire also, and I've been looking for something just like this. I have not found equivalent parts on the Toyota parts website. Yet. I'm hoping they will come available eventually.

Hello, in this case toyota already had the parts. The prius comes with spares outside of America/Canada. I would check to see if the Cross has a spare in certain regions, if it does you should be able to locate toyota parts and there may be mounting holes/fixturing already. If it does not you may have to get creative with after market parts.

Hello! It's a "Donut" size that is straight from the Toyota manual and works for both the XLE 19" and LE 17". Official part number if you want to buy is T145/90D16 and is linked to amazon in the description!

I have a Prime, I would love to have a spare in it. Good luck removing the lug nuts with that pathetic wrench, remember that they were put on with air-driven impact drivers. I prefer to have one of those cross lug wrenches with a length of pipe as a cheater. I also prefer to have a small, cheap floor jack over those rinky-dink scissor jacks. I love the Prius, but I have the fact that it does not have a spare tire by default.

The entire kit is more than $600. Go to your local junk yard and get a 5x4.5 Camry spare and retainer bolt for $10.

Yep! This vid is for the full OEM version using only Toyota parts, you can definitely mix and match sources/DIY the foam if you wanted to save some cash. There are some forum posts on this as well

Works for all gen5 HEV Priuses. There are a couple install hiccups with the LE, but all XLE and LTD work just like the video. Doesn't work at all with Prius Primes. And there are no perceptible differences at all between the 2023 and 2024 models. (a couple individual wires here and there are routed differently, but the model years are 99.999% identical).

It will not work for a Prime. The battery pack under the floor is larger, so the sheet metal floor sits a couple inches higher than the regular HEV Prius. Also, the HV charger is mounted to the sheet metal on the left hand side of the trunk, and (if you have the solar roof) the solar roof electrical components are mounted to the right side.

It is interesting but Toyota telling me you should not do it? They recommend getting 19” tire eventually at junk yard, then put it in the back. All cars should have donut or spare. Love the Prius but no donut and tire size is limited out there.

How much did you spend in total for this whole project?

It cost me $596.14 total, $490.14 for all the Toyota OEM parts, $99 for the tire off amazon, and $7 dollars for the tire shop to put together the tire for me. You could probably go cheaper if you tried to DIY the foam inserts.

@gonzomuppet9255, This tire is just a thinner width spare tire, it is the one that is called out by the Toyota user manual for both the 17” and 19” wheels. I’m not sure if a full size tire would fit without modifying the foam.

I have a '24 but the pan is different with just a single bold hole to which to screw in a traditional spare retainer. The owner's manual had a section on the optional spare tire, but the Toyota dealer was unhelpful as they usually are. Dealers are worthless, Tesla has a better model but the government keeps useless dealers in business.
