Couple things for everyone to remember: 1) 50+ 5.0 is obviously not 19+ 5.0. Players in this bracket would probably be closer to 3.5 19+ players. Real 50+ 5.0 players are playing "senior pro". And even then, there's a lot of 4.5's in the mix. It's because pickleball is a newer game. This is not like tennis where all these players would have grown up playing. Give pickleball 10 more years and senior-level play will be much stronger and accurate. 2) These were very windy conditions. If anyone was there, you know. And you can tell by their shirts blowing. This always makes play look worse than it is. 3) No need to savage these players. Even at a 3.5 or 4.0 senior level - they'll still murder 95% of the pickleball population. It's tough playing competitive pickleball past 50 due to lack of participating players.

Kind of good points except for "closer to 3.5 19+". While you definitely can find some players at lower level, those who got to the finals would pickle 3.5s no matter age. The majority of 55+ playing 5.0 bracket are indeed 4.5s, and they will compete 19 y.o. 4.5s just all right, it just does not look as pretty, but very effective.

? But the USAPA ratings have objective definitions with a list of skill sets you must have in order to be classified as a certain rating. It transcends age.

@@CyberSonic157 what does it have to do with a tournament game? The document you refer to is only for rough evaluation of player's skills in a test environment with instructor when tournaments participation data is not available. It is not to judge live play on video and make silly comments about players ratings. The purpose of a tournament game is to win, not to demonstrate your skill set.

@@BookValue2018 What do you mean by "competitiveness"? A 5.0 19 year old and a 5.0 50 year old will both have the same skills and fineness. The only difference is that the 19 year old will have a significant advantage having faster reflexes, better agility, and they can hit with more power.

Age bracket ratings seem to confuse so many people. Think of age brackets and it's pretty easy.

I agree with many of the other comments, it is misleading to call these players 5.0 players. Nothing against these folks, but this isn't 5.0 level play, if for no other reason than the movement alone. They are obviously really good 55+ players, but a 5.0 should be a 5.0 regardless of age.

A lot of people would probably agree with you and a lot probably wouldn't. Age based tournaments need a way to separate skill levels too. FYI, this is currently the biggest amateur tournament in the world. Well over 3000 players and drawn by lottery.

@@spaghettimanpickleball Definitely, there needs to be a way to separate skills even at these older ages, but I just think a 5.0 should be a 5.0. I play and train almost exclusively with guys (and a couple of ladies too) who are 5.0 and above, and this just isn't that. Again, no slight to these folks, but the accuracy and pace of these shots, the slower reflexes, the lack of foot speed and agility... this just isn't the quality of play you see with true 5.0 players.

@@Kyleforthe3SIKE don't think so. Because calling this 2.5 shows your ixpertise very well. First you probably believe that top pros are 5.0 and compare this to them. Next you probably have not seen yourself on video. Also probably have not seen other 5.0 videos either. I would not argue against "4.5" assessment, but those "3.5" and lower are absolutely inadequate. Besides, it is easy to find the match on pickleballtournaments and figure out players' DUPR ratings. I strongly believe that all people who comment like you under real US Open gold medal match completely missing the point. The title is 100% accurate, as it *was* US Open Gold Medal Mixed 55+ 5.0. Why would you try to insult the players you apparently never met? Is you life so miserable you need this for self validation?

50+ age pickleball is literally the baseline for all players. By universal standards: Raegan is 3.3 at best. Weak serve. Floaty return. She cant run, lunge, or pivot. Her only schtick is to engage in heads-up dink exchanges hoping that her opponent will cross it and Jim will poach the pop-up. Zero weapons. Jim is a Saint.

Not for this event. The entry fees are about double to play for the $, this is the next best thing.

I'm not sure pickleball translates to TV as well as other sports anyway. But I see these age group tournament matches and they just don't look that strong. Can't say I'd be scared to go on court with them anyway.

@@MarkNapartovich Rating systems are notoriously hard to work reliably. Look at FIFA can't even setup a working rating system for national football teams and that's the biggest sport in the world. All I'm saying is that watching a match like this 5.0 doesn't seem that strong, I see unforced errors and quite a lot of questionable shots. If I was watching them at a club I'd happily go on against them thinking this would be a decent game, but not worried I'd be outclassed. Contrast that with top level senior tennis, I'd take one look and think, nope.

@@transklutz Feels like even semi-decent overhead serves would be almost impossible to return consistently so would give a huge advantage to the server. You'd end up with games with almost no rallies?!?

Would require completely rewriting all the rules, especially scoring, to allow overhead serves. Would become slower tennis...
