prices are just crazy now. Bought a pre-registered golf gti in 2019 for £25k 7.5 with performance pack as standard and now worth £22k. with 25k miles. Shocked at newer car prices - civic type-r now £47k! and golf r £50k. struggling to justify buying a newer car as cannot justify. Price rises 100% but wages rises 10 to 15%. p.s. enjoy your vids

The acrapovic exhaust should be standard on the R20 and not an option. For me this R adds too little value for its price to choose this over a normal Mk8 R.

I would love to upgrade my MK7 R to the R20 but £600 a month and 10k down is hard to justify. Crazy how much cars have jumped in price over last few years. Great review though as always 👏🏻👏🏻

Thank you for your video and comparison. I myself am currently driving the Golf 8 R Performance with Akrapovic exhaust system every day since July 2021 and I am more than satisfied. Before that I owned and drove all Golf GTI models and R models. When I look at the video, I don't really see any significant difference between the Golf 8 R Performance and the 20-year edition. Except for a little more bang and bang at launch. The 13 hp more will not really make itself felt in daily operation. Actually, 320 hp should be enough in a Golf ;-) Of course, there is always more to do with tuning. But then at some point I can also buy a full-fledged sports car or a Porsche etc. The Golf doesn't get 400 hp and more on the road and is completely nonsensical.

But my normal 8R in Nurburgring mode with DSG in S+ or M does gives you that jolt on the upshift as well.

Question is, does the tuned Golf also feel better in terms of Turbolag? Because honestly if the tuning is "only" 700 pounds then why wouldi not buy a 20 years with the better pull from factory already and then also tune it so it would be mega sharp?

The Racingline Stage 1 looks bonkers quick. Prefer the MK8 Golf overall now, having driven a few application’s. Think I can agree we’d all like to see the 20 R on the dyno.

Turn off the car whilst in Special, when you start it, it does exactly the same thing as the R20 without all the fidgeting with break and holding button etc

How does the tuned 8R compared to a stock RS3?

I have the mrk7 R and its been an absolute joy to drive and absolutely love it. Im still not sold on the mrk8 shape mmmmmmm but still a great car no doubt

People complain about the MSRP, before you do so, check how much was a 2019 MK7 R, around 40K...! New! buying a used MK7 R, 2019 with 25,000 miles is around $36,000!!!! 4k less for a 4 yr old car, 1k per yr depreciation!!! What do you expect, to be sold at 40k new? Not too many cars from 2019 have a 4k loss, most average 10 to 15k. Years ago I purchased a Rav4, the same car now is about 8k more new. No car holds the same MSRP of its predecessors.

When racing in Milton Keynes done my mk7 golf r stage 2 tune they f*** it up badly!! And when they put the figures the car was suppose to be doing it was running wel under it's performance!! When i question them they just bloked me!! NEVER GOING TO THEM AGAIN!!!!!

Still better off with a used 8V RS3 if you want a nice spec car with a special engine

I kept my Mk8 R for just over a year and decided to Sell in on, I love driving it, but i just cannot get on with the system inside, way too many faults and constant errors, lag etc.. a real shame... This 20 year edition is nothing special imo im afraid , that black console is terrible, 50k plus, no thanks

Nice review Andrew. The price of these cars is starting to get silly. For me I think they could of put the word 'Anniversary' next to the R on the dagger badge and also under the 20 on the B pillar. Anyway, so making the turbo have 'anti-lag' and have this flap stay open does seem to improve performance and grin factor and let's face it, thats what us petrol heads want from our performance car. If I was to buy the R20 it would be in Lapiz blue with the black accents and wheels. A further review of the Racingline R would be good or even their mk7.5 GTi #racingline

Great tip about the emotion start! Love my mk8R it pulls and pulls but the chance to take it to stage 1 with over 400bhp is going to be too hard to resist. I think you should do a full review of the new ecu tune. You got me scrolling through racingline webpage thinking I’d missed the big release. Hopefully they have a DSG tune to run side by side with it when it’s launched. 🤙🏼

I’m hoping to see some performance numbers when the weather is better. 0-60, 0-100, 0-100-0. I’m sure it will be a riot at the track. I’m also curious with all that power, how quick the temps creep up.

Does that high revving start happen when the engine is cold & not having been used for some time? I wouldn't want to fire my cold engine up immediately to 2500 RPM with the essential lubricating oil sitting in the sump.

Great video. A question, in your opinion (as you have bought/sold VWs for a number of years) would remapping a Golf devalue it when it comes to sell it? I've got a 7.5 GTi Performance and thinking of getting a stage 1 but worried it may have a negative impact when it comes to selling it.

Great to see you back Andrew. The first carbon fibre inlays in a Volkswagen? My 2016 CC R line black edition came with carbon interior trim from factory.. ;-) The Racingline car is simply awesome, and a credit to them. Still on the fence about the mk8 Golf in general, but really enjoyed the content.

Hi Andrew another great video I’ve enjoyed this one and whilst the price tag is beyond me I do like the anniversary R20 very much and I like the lapiz blue and white combo it suits it in my view I think Volkswagen have given you enough over the standard R to justify price and the more powerful engine as well I would love to see more of racing lines car it’s only got 350hp more than my 1.5tsi lol 😂I bet it is real fun! I did think it would be fab to do a 20 year comparison of the 8R 20 and the R32! Great review, and great calendar as well👍. The feature of keeping the turbo spoolled up between gear changes made me smile. Audi made a big feature of this on the Audi Sport quattro evo to help in its battles against Peugeot and Lancia in Group B in 85/86 and hey presto 37 years later it appears on a production car 😊

Hi Andrew, new to your channel; really enjoyed your review. I have a Golf R with Performance Pack and numerous other options on order, which I placed at the end of June, just before the option was withdrawn. I contacted my VW dealer to get assurance that my spec would be honoured at the end of the 50+ weeks I was given as time to delivery. Have any of your followers taken delivery in the last few months and had the Performance Pack supplied as requested?

It's good to see that VW have done a proper special edition car for the R, unlike the Edition 45 GTi. The price of these cars now is becoming a bit ridiculous now (although factors like exchange rates, etc, probably play their part). I had nearly £4k of options on my Mk7.5 R Estate - which took it to a list price of around £41500 (also nowhere near what I actually paid for it). Deposit was a low mileage Mk7 GTD (near the end of the PCP agreement) hatch plus £1k. This was only March 2020, so not that long ago - the monthly payments are a lot more too. You make an excellent point re the R20 v an optioned up standard R though - a good way to justify an R20! I can't see me buying one - I'll just pay about £12k & buy my own car at the end of the PCP in 2024. The Nappa leather definitely lifts the interior - good to have that as standard. I could live without the bangs & pops though (I've never liked that, just a personal thing). One big deal breaker for me - no R20 Estate, I believe?

As an owner of a 7.5R I always look at the MK8 Platform for a future upgrade. I think this R 20 years when I start seeing them 1-2 years old and approved used I'd be interested. Maybe a slight price drop too. Seems like a worthy upgrade. Although, 8R performance packs still hold strong money a few years down the line so who knows what the future will hold.

My PP car has jolts in Nurburgring mode. Also the last Golf R you drove wasn’t Performance Pack with Nurburgring mode so not a comparison against the non R20 car without a back to back test. Would like to see one on a dyno. Need to see dyno runs for non 20y in race, non 20y Nurburgring mode, 20y race and 20y Nurburgring. That would be a video!
