It's so interesting what you said about your son's comprehension and ADHD. I homeschooled all my kids but they are all grown now. My daughter always had terrible reading comprehension and I remember using different ways to help her (using the audio books for Apologia Science, having her read short amounts and answer questions as she goes along, etc.) Today I was just with her at the library and she was explaining how she rarely reads books (she does listen to audio books) because it's so hard to focus and she has to re read it more than once and it's not super enjoyable for her. I love that you have adapted things for your son to help him in that area. I also wanted to give you ( or any other moms with kids with similar issues) encouragement that our kids can and will succeed in life in spite of this challenge. My daughter has obtained her Master's Degree in Computer Science and works for Google. The reading comprehension was not an issue in college or on the job. They learn how to do things that work for them. Love your videos!

Thank you so, so much for the encouragement. I definitely needed to hear it and thanks for watching.

I love what you said about skipping the book studies. They do kill the joy of reading for (my opinion - no idea if this is fact) most students. :) So much can be learned still by just reading aloud to our kids - even highschoolers! I plan to keep reading aloud to my highschooler this coming year. All of that content can be accomplished by just talking to our kids about the books naturally as we are reading aloud to them.

Hi Ashlea! Stopping in to support your channel. My son is reading Number the Stars right now and is enjoying it. He’s meeting in a zoom book club once a week about it and enjoys that. Love your videos and miss our little chats! ❤Jamie

I love your ideas, Ashlea! I'm trying to foster more of a love for writing with my 16 year old son. IEW also has a science-based writing curriculum that we have enjoyed, even though it is intended more for younger students.

Even though I watched your 2024-25 Math video, I can NOT believe your son is in 10th grade. Thank you for sharing how you adapted TGTB for your son. Our sons are similar with reading and I may reconsider using TGTB for high school now.

I really like your writer’s notebook! It looks perfect for a boy!! I may use your ideas for my youngest son. Thank you for sharing. We are using All About Reading 2 and All About Spelling 1 for our 8 year old. Our middle three children will use MasterBooks Language Lessons for a Living Education Levels 5, 6, and 9. We will also continue to use Spelling You See C with our youngest son. I’m excited about these choices! We’ve never used MB LLFLE.

@@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife Levels 3 and up. My oldest and youngest love it. My middle child hates all things school, no matter what. I'm hoping the career/real world application of Campfire Curriculums will help with his reluctance towards learning.

I'm really considering using TGATB for Language Arts for my 10th grade and 8th grade sons, but I'm torn because I saw Masterbooks also has a new high school Language Arts. as well. I really appreciated seeing your choices!

I looked through the level 9 from Masterbooks and it looks great. I had already purchased TGATB, but if it doesn’t work out, we may move to Masterbooks for 11th grade.

I had written a large response to you on this, but it didn't post so I will try again. Glad to see you have chosen TGTB for 10th grade. My daughter who is also a 9th grader is currently on booklet 3 of HS year 1. She did the 8th grade book studies for the first semester this year. I think TGTB Language Arts high school is a great program and there are many things I really like about it: Good and wholesome literature, art and featured artists, more info on authors, geography, poetry and art. A few things I don't care for are the repetitiveness I have found in the first 3 booklets so far. A couple examples: There is sentence dictation that has the child repeat the same dictations 3 times, I found that to be too much and thought twice was enough. There is also spelling practice and the same sentence is repeated in each booklet, again twice was enough and TGTB could have came up with a new sentence to practice spelling in each booklet. Overall, I like the program so far and my daughter has completed level 6, 7 and 8 so we obviously both like it, but I have been modifying HS year 1 to fit her needs. I do think the insight journal prompts are well chosen and gives good variety for a child to choose a topic they would like to write about. Not sure what schedule you found on Facebook, but one thing I would recommend is allowing your son to do the unit check each week to go with the booklet, like every Friday give him the unit check, because I found it too difficult memorizing the questions asked about the author and artists. The only schedule I saw on the Facebook group said to give the unit check at the end and that didn't work efficiently IMO. I look forward to more of your videos and feedback on the TGTB HS year 1 content. Thank you for your videos!! :)

@@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife You are most welcome! The level 8 book studies were very good. They did not analyze the books, only a few questions were asked I believe in the Wild Like Foxes book, which my daughter and I discussed out loud.

Something that I didn’t find (either on the website or in the files they email…I can’t remember) is a Unit Check for each booklet. It’s basically a test. I used them to help make a grade for the course. Just a head’s up in case you didn’t see them.
