I would have expected better as well from the 6.6 gas. Wonder if it is just because of elevation. I also agree when putting in the Alison transmission for 24 the should have increased the HP number at least, if not TQ as well.

I’m glad you confess to being a diesel fan boy lol cause it’s obvious. Of course the power from the diesel is what everyone wants. Probably is the initial and maintenance related costs with that now. We took our Yukon to the dealership on Wednesday for it’s first service. I was cruising the lot looking at the 3/4 ton diesels there. I guy came up and started talking to me. Real nice guy, but come to find out, his 2019 Silverado Duramax was in service for a failed fuel injector. He said it was the second time it had happened with the first at 60k miles. Not a cheap fix. He had an extended warranty as he now has 160,xxx miles on it, but both under the factory warranty and the extended warranty, they will only change the affected injector. You should always change them all. Kind of has me feeling for a gasser when I’m ready to order haha

Initial cost for the Duramax is definitely significantly higher, but so is the resale. Maintenance cost difference isn't much. Performance wise, there is no comparison. The diesel out performs the gasser in every way, shape or form. I use my truck for truck stuff, and live at altitude in Colorado. Gas is great for cars. Diesel is for trucks.

Enjoy your reviews and commentary. I am in the process of upgrading to a 5th wheel and looking for a new 1 ton Truck. My concern going to a diesel engine is the potential maintenance issues I will encounter because I drive less than 8,000 per year; live in the Midwest and tow May-Oct approx 25 time a year. Am I over thinking this? Looking forward to your and subscribers comments.

You are overthinking it. I put less than 7,000 miles per year on my Duramax trucks. I just bought a new 2024 LTZ about 3 weeks ago, my 4th Duramax. The only thing you will encounter with the low miles driven is great trade in or resale value. I got $51k trade in on my 2018 3500 Sierra SLT with less than 58k miles on it. It had 38k miles on it when I bought it 3 years ago for $53k. WARNING - If you ever pull a trailer with a diesel truck, you will never be able to go back to a gasser!!!

Also, you have to consider the burnout cycle you get with the diesel. I had one for over 8 years, and I just traded it in for a gas AT4 2500. My style of driving and warm-up with the diesel only added up to an average of 12. 6 to 13.6 miles a gallon , of course it might be because I live in NH. I am hoping to like my new truck and will enjoy a dollar less a gallon with thos truck. We shall see what I do 3 yrs from now. I loved my diesel, though.

Gas only will never have enough power if you're comparing it to a diesel.(no sense to compare) My brother tows his 30-footer all over the place with the old 6-speed gas 6.6l and it has plenty of power. You're always talking about oh I like how heavy it feels who ever says they like something that feels heavy most people hate when things feel heavy. You are just used to driving a diesel and think that it feels normal but it isn't. And just because I disagree with you don't mean I don't like your content I'm just coming from the perspective of somebody that drives both gas and Diesel all the time.

To each their own but if you're gonna get a truck to tow heavy weights, the diesel is the only way to go. Sure a gas truck will pull a trailer but I have a buddy who wanted to save cash and got the gaser and pull through the colorado mountains and he's regretting it. I hate when he wants to drive to a campsite together because he can't keep up and I'm constantly slowing down to let him catch up. My trailer is a 21k lbs toy hauler 5th wheel and is is a 32 ft bumper pull 5th wheel and I weight about 10k more than him just with the trailer. One time pulling up Loveland pass, I couldn't see him anymore and he told me his wife said, is that needle supposed to be in the red. So I guess gas has its place but yeah, it don't compare to the diesel.

You’re talking about roughly a 10k difference has to diesel upfront. The resale or trade in accounts for it when you’re ready to let it go. Most guys don’t mess around w keeping these trucks out of warranty. No point. Trade them In and keep driving new. You likely don’t need one of these trucks unless you are using it on the daily for work related tasks. Dragging around a loader or a heavy excavator ect. If you’re doing that then the 10k difference from gas to diesel really doesn’t matter. If it does, then you probably need to charge more for the work you are doing with said truck.

It's not broken in yet! The gas will not improve, the Duramax WILL DRAMATICALLY improve MPG after 10K-12K miles. The MPG you got is typical for a brand new not-yet-broken in diesel. My '18 started getting 21 MPG after 10K and after 20K (now at 86K) I am consistently getting 23-25 MPG highway at 75. So for a fair comparison, compare a gas with 15K and a Duramax with 15K.

At the current cost of diesel verses gas, the cost of def, and the cost of a certeen boost, and only TWO miles per gal better than the gas. You're going to have to drive that diesel a whole lot of miles to pay that GM $10,000.00 price tag for that diesel engine. I have had a diesel since 2002 and just ordered a 6.6 gas. I am tired of paying extras for repairs, fuel, and def.. I am willing to loose torque to save all that money.

It is not so much horsepower, it is TORQUE that you probably need more of. Boosting the output would only make the probably worse, as the "hotter" you make an engine, the less low RPM torque you have.. More cubes is the answer. If you want a blower, a supercharger is better on a gasser than a turbo. No turbo lag, less heat, less complexity. BUT, most gasoline engines are too, lightly built to hold up with a blower under heavy duty use, so if you take that route, don't say you weren't warned!

LOL Diesel and gas are pretty much the same price again. (if you run the low grade, cheap gas) DEF use really isn't much (maybe $110/year) and there is actually very little difference in maintenance. 2-1/2 gallons of oil vs what, 1-1/2 or so gallons for the gasser. The extra 4 quarts of oil a couple times a year isn't going to break the bank... LOL The expense is up front when you buy the diesel. The thing is you get a LOT of that back when you sell. I paid $53k for my '18 Duramax 3 years ago and just got $51k trade in for it. That would NEVER happen with a gasser.

Putting the 10 speed trans in a gasser seems odd, as gas engines work best with the fewest gears that you get away with, whereas with a diesel, the more gears the better.

The 4 extra gears are to help get a heavy load out of the hole with less effort.

More gears keep the engine in peak power range. They are not there for drag racing.

what? no you want to stay in teh power band esp on GM where they pull throttle below a certain RPM to protect the bearings (same as 8.1 did)

The torque of the diesel engine makes it an unfair competition. The real comparison comes for those of us that don’t haul 15 to 20,000 pounds all the time. For those of us that haul in the 10 to 14,000 pound range 3 to 4 times a month owning a gas heavy duty is an advantage.

This 6.6L L8T engine makes a bit less horsepower than even the 6.2L L86. To spend a bunch of money on this HD truck is really not worth it. This truck would get annoying to drive within a week after owning it. Diesel all the way!

ya but 6.2 derates if you stay WOT too long. the HD's dont.

For a diesel there needs to be an oil filtration system which includes sending test samples to GM so that effectively all that need be done is add oil when that is low as that is the key distinction between diesel and gasoline namely one of *DURABILITY* of the engine and powertrain able to handle low end torque towing needs for putting the "heavy duty" in HD. Gasoline matters because of enormous energy output if powering up electronics, running AC and modern trailer brake systems etc.

How the fuck did you get 11 seconds to 60 in the gas. It should be faster than that.
