After two decades of successful leadership at the University of St. Andrews and the University of Oxford, Louise Richardson returned to the U.S. last summer to become the President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Her reflections will illuminate the challenges her counterparts leading American universities today will certainly be facing.
Before that, Richardson taught as a professor at Harvard. Her foundational analyses of terrorism in The Roots of Terrorism and What Terrorists Want, put America's alarm in the post-9/11 war on terrorism into a historical perspective-reminding us that terrorism did not begin with the attack on the World Trade Center. With insights that reflect her early life in Ireland during the troubles between Ireland and the U.K., she offered perspective on the phenomenon of terrorism from the inside out, as well as from her academic perch. Her insights about the necessity to understand the political origins of extremism, rather than simply beginning with military interventions first, offer a timely perspective on what’s currently occurring in the Middle East.
