It all seemed to be progressing as normal. In the dry, on the mandatory medium-compound Pirellis, Max Verstappen (Red Bull-Honda) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) headed the times in Q2, with the two McLaren-Mercedes lying P4/P5. Then it began to rain. Pirelli intermediates were wheeled into action, neutralising F1's status quo. Even as drivers like Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso rose to the top, however, there was confusion about who was on the pole. It appeared to be Lewis - but then Lando went even quicker. Then Lando's time was deleted for a track limits infringement. Jubilation broke out in the Mercedes garage...then Lando's pole time was reinstated. Through the confusion and the rapid changes in fortune, Peter Windsor looks at the day's key elements.
