Every year, I let a few of my leeks go to flower because the bees just adore them. 🐝 Last year, when I pulled the spent blooms + stalks, I noticed that they had grown little corms, so I decided to replant them. And this spring, I was treated to a free leek harvest, plus a few more to let bloom again. So, now, I essentially have perpetual leeks... Who knew?! I just 💚 when a lil' impulsive garden experiment works out like that!

And I didn't know that Elephant Garlic set corms because I have yet to get my hands on some to grow myself. But I guess it kind of makes sense since I've always heard that Elephant Garlic is more closely related to leeks than to actual garlic... Look at us ol' gardeners teaching each other new tricks! 😁

Nice harvest! I planted elephant garlic as an experiment last October. They did great growing through the winter, but when the warmth of spring hit, the grocery store mystery garlic surpassed them. Yesterday I harvested my garlic. I got some very impressive bulbs, and some small bulbs thanks to Angel. My cat felt the need to rearrange my planting space, closer is better. She is a digger, and demands digging space. Something came up missing-my elephant garlic. Every one of them was gone, from stem to bulb. The only thing I can think of is a two legged garlic loving critter, knew what they were, and beat me to the harvest. My nearest neighbor is a half mile walk, figure that. This was my last year growing kohlrabi. I managed to get three plants to form bulbs, two small and one large. However, they were rock hard. I might grow them for a decorative plant, but they are off the list as a food crop. There are a lot of other plants that I can grow in their place, or experiment with new varieties.

@@SageandStoneHomestead The elephant garlic wasn't a big loss, five plants. They would have been smaller than my smallest garlic. They don't do well in Alabama heat. It was an experiment to see how well they grow before planting a production crop. The garlic I purchased fom the grocery store did impresivly well. I'll plant three times as much this fall. The rest of my garden is exploding with goodness. I've harseted peppers twice, and I've already harvested my first slicer tomato of the season, a Thornburn's Terra-Cotta. My determinant tomatoes are still flowering and fuiting, and are already loaded with fruit. The semi-determinant tomatoes are monsters, some nearly eight feet tall, flowering and fruiting. I am also picking a lot of squash and cucumbers.

I'm a first time gardener and I'm growing in containers. I had to move the dill to a more shady area.. it didn't like the sun exposure it was getting ... but I want to also use it as an insect repellent around what I'm growing. I may make a small shade cloth for it. I've also heard of people growing okra to provide shade for plants. I may try that next year.

These Garden Tours of yours are so wonderful! Thank you for bringing us along. I do wonder what it was growing up the trellis near the dill, though? It looks so familiar to me and I just can't quite place it. Also, at the end with Foxy munching on an animal cracker - that's so stinking cute! Don't know if you'd even want to, but if you wanted to add a pop of color to salads, zinnia petals are edible - though the flowers are pretty spectacular in the garden, too.

I've grown several different varieties of tomatillos and found that there is a difference between mature, and ripe, just as with tomatoes. However, some definitely do not taste good ripe. The big round ones are usually definitely better picked green, or there is a purple, so when the husk splits. Fair warning, they are usually super sticky too. I find they are more crisp and sharp this way. Where as if you pick them 'ripe' they tend to get pappy, like an over ripe apple, with sometimes a weird back taste on them. You can always test them out for yourself though by leaving some to get that far, and see what you think.
