Thank you so much! It’s a little difficult to give recommendations without knowing someone’s reading taste, so I’ll say that the safe bet is to start with Haikyu. It’s a bit long but it has everything you could want in a sports manga (suspenseful matches, endearing characters, rivals, comedy, etc) and it does it all extremely well. It’s also more on the realistic side of sports manga. If you don’t mind something pretty exaggerated, I personally started with Kuroko’s Basketball (I watched the anime, but the manga is pretty similar from what I’ve seen). It’s pretty much “basketball with superpowers” but it’s a very exciting watch/read. I would consider both of these “traditional” sports manga in that they follow a common story-telling style with tournaments and training arcs that you’ll see in many shonen sports manga. Other titles in this category include Slam Dunk (my personal favorite), Yowamushi Pedal, Eyeshield 21, and Sayonara Football, among others. Ping Pong would also maybe fit here, though it’s much shorter than these other titles, and I probably wouldn’t recommend it for beginners just because Taiyo Matsumoto’s art style can be just a bit hard to follow if you’re not used to it. For manga that are similar but deal with games that might not typically be described as sports, there’s Hikaru no Go and Chihayafuru (tho I haven’t read this one). If you’re looking for something that’s much more of a human drama, give Real by Takehiko Inoue a try. Also I haven’t read Cross Game yet but I’ve heard that it has more of a focus on a romance plot than most sports manga if that’s something you’re interested in. Hopefully this list gives you an idea of where to start, and also isn’t too overwhelming lol. If you have any more questions let me know!

I was going to watch the anime but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. I’ve seen some screenshots though and I don’t think the anime is able to really adapt the art style properly. Which makes sense because the art is very highly detailed and would be difficult to animate, but I think I would be disappointed watching it since the art is one of my favorite things about the series.

As someone who has read the manga, I personally was not a fan of the first episode. There was simply something missing for me... If I could have a "repeat" I would watch it first and the read it.

Yep, I actually read that one back in 2017. Unfortunately I didn’t care for it at the time, probably because I really struggle with the 4 panel comedy format. I might have to revisit it in the future though since I loved Yotsuba so much.

@@tonireadsmanga Ah, okay. I'm half-way through the omnibus and really enjoying it -might give me the same amount of laughs as Yotsuba did last year, but Yotsuba is way more endearing. It’s been about 5 or 6 years since I bought them so I can’t remember exactly but I probably got them from Right Stuf. They were in print and easily accessible when I picked them up so I unfortunately don’t have any advice for places to find them besides the typical places like Amazon, eBay, etc. Hopefully Viz reprints them in the future.

Yeah I try not to go too crazy with multiple editions but sometimes the collector’s editions are too nice to pass up.

That’s definitely an option! I’ve used some plastic trays from the dollar store before, but I personally prefer these target ones for their height and sturdiness.

I really wish Seven Seas had just stopped numbering the volumes after volume 3 and just kept the subtitle instead so it didn’t look bad on my shelf lol

@@laslo9463 But there’s no point in me having the Jojo volumes when I’m not going to read them. They take up way too much space. I do own the anime since that’s the medium I prefer for that series.

@@laslo9463 Yep, with the exception of Fullmetal Alchemist because I haven’t read the manga yet. The only other anime I prefer over the manga is Attack on Titan and that’s why I unhauled that one too.
