Oops, I usually mention weight ... but I missed it.
WEIGHT: 25.6 lbs (the exact bike I filmed)
The Marin DSX is now into its second generation. The first models were supposed to come out in 2020 but availability was quite limited. Since this bike came out, it has been one of our most requested bikes. People appreciate the quality, value, ride quality and wide range of applications for the DSX.
This DSX 1 is the second cheapest of the different DSX models. It is the first level of DSX that has the carbon fiber fork and thru axles front and rear. There are 3 higher-end versions of this bike, sharing the same frame and fork but seeing changes in color and specifications.
We like the DSX 1 for its simple 1x drivetrain, Shimano Deore 11 speed system, simple/inexpensive Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and its relative light weight.

Always like your detailed overview of new bikes from front to rear. The witty saying about gravel bikes is that they're just 90's mountain bikes, and with flat bars this one seems to play into that. But, it also seems like a very good setup for people looking to do a broad mix of casual riding, from paved roads and paths to commuting to easy green trails. And that use case describes a LOT of riders. With the carbon fork, 11 speed Deore, and hydraulic brakes this looks like a good setup for many riders.

Picked up the base model DSX last summer to have an affordable, versatile bike that I could ride while visiting my fam in NY. Didn't modify it other than throwing on some ergon bar end grips. Also didn't have a chance to ride gravel but tbh, I was pleasantly surprised by how capable it was on the hilly roads in my hometown despite the 1x dt & wtb riddler gravel tires. The only thing I didn't care for was the stock Marin saddle. That'll be the firs thing I swap out this summer.

The crank and the bottom bracket is a definite weak spot but otherwise a great design. I ride a medium frame but could move up to large on this model because of the generous stand over along with longer wheel base. Looking at the higher end equipped with SRAM.

Yeah, I was all set to buy one of these (the fs model) but that press fit/crank combo has put me off completely.

Great overview. Thinking about getting one of these for commute to work, light trails etc. Be keen to find out if you could actually run the wheels/tyres tubeless. The higher models are listed as tubeless ready. The DSX1 isn’t, but you say you may be able to get away with it. Maybe wheels/tyres would be a good upgrade? I’m 176cm tall. Looking at the Medium size bike but usually ride a Large size MTB (Norco Torrent S1). On your suggestion maybe a Large size DSX would work better for me. Be good to try but they are online only in Australia.

I wouldn't try running the stock tires tubeless but if you're Patient and willing to try, with a good rim tape job you might be able to get tubeless tires to setup 9n the rims. The one thing I'd take a close look at first is the seem of the rim to look for any gaps. Of course the official answer is that you have to get tubeless rims...

I've been riding my XL frame DSX-1 for about two months now (I'm 1.87m) and I love it. Did switch out the Riddlers for some Vittoria Terreno Zeros. Little more narrow and it does make a big difference on-road for speed. Last week threw a new Specialized saddle on with better perineum relief which made a world of difference. I'm on the fence about starting a weight cutting project by replacing all components that I can with ultra light stuff. Then again, it's already very nice to ride.

Yes, tires can transform a bike. Glad to hear how much you love the bike. If you decide to put the bike on a diet, the cranks/chainring/bb is where I would start.

I'd suggest test riding a Large and Xlarge. Either could work depending on what feels comfortable to you for saddle to handlebar reach and handlebar height

Awesome in depth video. Sadly I’m not in the same country as you, so I will lose the opportunity to come in and try out the sizing. However, I’m 6 ft 4 and was wondering if you thought the XL would be too small for me? Thanks.

I think XL would, at least, be worth trying. If needed you could put on a longer stem if you found the reach to feel short but I think it is likely you'd like the XL.

I'm exactly the same height as you. I also have slightly longer arms and shorter legs than standard body proportions. I bought a XL size DSX 1 2023 bike. I wasn't very comfortable with the kit stem. I increased the stem length to 120mm and flipped it down. I also put horns on the inside of the grips. Now everything is fine. I have different options for gripping the handlebar.

The Small size for DSX 1 says up to 168 cm. I am 170 cm. Do you recommend S or M size for me?

Ideally you could ride both but if not, I would suggest medium - most people seem to size up.

If you're ooking for fast gravel, the Gestalt 2 is a speedster, I run it against pedigree aerobikes on tarmac no problem at all! The DSX is a cruiser though and stable, but for climbs and for added boost I have to hop out of the saddle, its longer wheel base tames its acceleration a bit, definitely more of a MTB than a gravel bike in that regard, but a great bike for sure!

6'5 would definitely be pushing the limits, both for the frames dimensions and minimum insertion of the seatpost.

The tyres are too thick. This is more a mountain bike like hybrid. What is a good hybrid bike for City commute with an upright driving position between Trek and Marin?
@BikeBrosBikeShop
@BikeBrosBikeShop 5 ай бұрын
I don't know Trek's line up. The Marin Fairfax is more asphalt oriented with smooth, slightly narrower tires. Don't be too turned off by the tire size though. If you look at the competitive road racing world, the wisdom of what tire size is correct has evolved from 23mm wide to 28 or even 32mm depending on the course with comfort, efficiency, traction all increasing with larger tire size - while doing testing, many of the professional racers actually thought the bigger tires were slower but the analysis of speed/power output were improved on larger, softer tires... just something to consider.

@@BikeBrosBikeShop Great answer. I checked Fairfax 3 - with 700x35 thin tyres, upright seating position, Shimano Sora gears and Tektro hydraulic discs, it is great value for money and what I was looking for in a hybrid

Is it normal that the front axle can loosen sometimes? Or maybe its the case with all axles? It used to happen it on my dsx1, and I heard from another user that he sad the same problem. In my case, helped just tighten it stronger than usual
@BikeBrosBikeShop
@BikeBrosBikeShop 5 ай бұрын
This isn't an issue we've seen much of so I'm not sure what to say... The axle standards are used by a number of different brands so if this was an issue it wouldn't be brand specific.

@@kjracz15Stuff changes over time. My 1994 Specialized is less MTB than this with its rigid steel frame and fork, 600mm flat bar and long stem, super vertical headtube angle, 26" rims and 1.95" wide tires. Was a very good MTB at the time. Now it would be on the road-biased end of gravel!

This bike has a more aggressive fit than trek dual sport 3? I am looking for a bike for a more comfortable ride
@BikeBrosBikeShop
@BikeBrosBikeShop Ай бұрын
A quick fix for that can be riser handlebars. The handling between the two bikes is quite different: I'd suggest trying both. There isn't one that is better, but you may find the stable, "carvy" nature of the DSX to your liking... or you may like the fast handling of the Trek.
