2024 Mazda CX-50 with new tires and 18" wheels -- and something weird (thoughts?)

All work was done at my local Discount Tire store. Wheels are DX4 18" x 8 flat black with +30 offset vs +45 stock offset. They stick out about 1.3 cm more. Tires are Michelin Defender LTX M/S size 255/55 R18.
What is weird is this one stock wheel/tire has a TON of weights on it.

Hey Chris, I used to have a job balancing tires when I was just 18 years old. I seam to recall that if I had to add too much weight I would back up and spin the tire around the rim about 180 then start balancing again. It is heavy to the outside because the center of the rim is all on that side. :)

Someone running the balance machine did not know what they were doing. Should have spun the wheel for a different location. We're tipping over is due to the way the rim is designed that's normal.

Thanks. It just is plain weird. It is almost looks like a defect compared to the other three stock wheels. But, I am no expert on this at all. I did gain a little offset (poke) with the new 18" wheels...about 1 - 1.5 cm.

Thanks...I am just glad those stock ones are off. Prob will sell them to recoup some money. Discount Tire really hooked me up with the new wheels and tires.

Almost guarantee that tire that falls over was mostly a front tire. The rubber is likely worn because it was a front tire and you took a turn in one direction fast(or vehicle rolls more) that particular direction. Could also be worn/damaged parts on the location that wheel was mounted too. Improper alignment could be a possibility too. Try to remember if you slacked on tire rotations and which location that tire may have spent the most time at. If all three other tires stand freely and that is the only one falling over… I’d suspect what I just mentioned.

IKR? The car now drives like butter...quiet and comfortable with those Michelin's vs crap Goodyears and those Japanese anime-wannabe cartoon character excuse for wheels. Leave it to us maintainers to unFuck stuff like this.

The extra tire thickness is a great idea! Too many skinny tires now a days, much too bumpy IMHO.

Agreed! And with a little wheel offset -- fills out the wheel wells nicely (without looking gangster)

There's a lip mounted clip on weight on opposite side of the stick on weights. That makes no sense. I don't think the tech knew what they were doing or balanced it without realizingthere s a lip weight already on the rim.

personally, I would have chosen a different wheel color, but that's just me...I'm not a "black wheel" fan. nor am I a "white wheel" fan. but definitely steps in the right direction....

Picking tires/wheels is sorta like buying new shoes. 99.99% of people don't wear combat boots while playing basketball. These Michelin's are fantastic...quiet, comfortable, with some lower end off-road capability (they are not an A/T or mud tire). The black wheels make the Mazda look "less grocery getter" and more aggressive...IMHO. To each their own...my car, my rules.

@@ChrisDIYerOklahoma... the wheels/tires are fine, I'm just not on board w/the black wheel trend. I get upset at OEMs that put black/nearly black wheels on their cars (see Subaru). A lighter color wheel is more interesting to look at, in my opinion of course....

@@K03sport Oh, I hear ya. It really just comes down to what works for the car owner. FWIW - Discount Tire had to put genuine OEM tire pressure sensors on my new wheels. They are $78/ea. I had "TPMS errors" and took it to the Mazda dealership. They said to use Mazda sensors ONLY. Discount Tire paid for everything...$0. New sensors are working perfectly. The new Michelins are excellent...and one size up in width and height....more brawnier.

I also own 2024 CX50 Turbo. 20 inches wheel certainly makes a lot road noise. I am shopping for 18 or 17-inch wheels. How is your ride with 18 inches wheels? How much noise do these 18 wheels reduce? Thank you.

No noise reduction from what I can tell. The ride is much better with 18" wheels -- 1" more rubber makes a big difference. Road noise depends on many factors -- tires being the biggest. Mazda also didn't do much interior sound proofing in these CX-50's...adequate around town, but at highway speeds you can hear tire/road surface noise.
