The Met Gala has evolved into one of the most highly-anticipated events on the fashion calendar, and this year’s showing did not disappoint. The dress code was "The Garden of Time," in celebration of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2024 Costume Institute exhibition titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which features 250 rare items spanning over 400 years of fashion history. Seasoned fashion expert Hal Rubenstien joins Forbes to discuss all the glamor, innovation, and unforgettable moments from the Met Gala 2024 red carpet.

I don't understand why Mindy's dress is not getting more attention. I totally agree with Hal, it was one of the best. It referenced the crystal roses and the fact that the garden of time is cyclical.

The same designer did a very similar dress in deep blue for Cardi B. several years ago. Mindy's dress was architecturally beautiful, but it was a rehash.

Zendaya actually wore Three great ensembles for this one Met Gala. Give her a job and she goes the extra mile. Superb!

I love Mindy's dress so much. It is so difficult to do those three things : match the theme, have a beautiful outfit and be strinking. She got it all so perfectly. Also, Zendaya's bouquet hat and attitude was like she owned the place. Amazing.

Kim's sweater was NOT a wardrobe malfunction... John Galiano has a long history of playing with how fabrics decay. This shines through very strongly in his last margiela show. It's a sweater made of boiled wool recreating how someone's favourite sweater changes over time. The pilling on the sweater is what happens when you wash any kind of wool many times. And a so called well loved safety sweater represents that as well. The story goes that she had spent the night at her lovers place and ran home through the woods in the morning. Before she left she took her lovers sweater with her as it was cold. If you don't understand the whole back story I see why many people mistake it as a wardrobe malfunction, however anyone who is somewhat interested in fashion has seen margielas last show and would understand this.

I'm so tired of people tearing down outfits and turning the whole thing into a "look at my good taste. These celebs have horrible taste" contest KZfaq and social media have become regarding the gala. Nice to see someone simply analyze the clothes relating to the theme and it's not about splitting attendees into winners and losers in such a loud way. Thank you for this analysis

Wait, the men had a decent display this year. Not just some dude being handsome wearing black shoes with a beige suit. We had Bad Bunny, Charlie Hunan, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, and Ben Simmons. All had so much more to offer than a Hemsworth brother.

In a way somewhat delighted that some seemed confused. And hooray for those that took the time to really embrace the magic behind Awakening the Sleepy Beauties. Now it's time for the Met Gala to define the rules and demand respect, etiquette, decorum for the event to add all staff and ones who participate.

Janelle Monae, for my money, got the Garden of Time side of the equation best. Her Vera Wang dress used recycled plastic to form the crystal flowers, indicating both creativity and decay.

Mona Patel's Iris van Herpen gown had clockwork which was a great take, too. It was also nice to see butterflies illustrating the garden motif rather flowers.

I thought the sweater for Kim was about how things get old and fall apart. It was pilled and made to look old. I just assumed that was in keeping with the theme, but I've never heard anyone confirm this. I thought the sands of time dress was very clever and looked great, unique.

Zendaya's first look was definitely John Galliano but from his Spring 1999 collection, not from his last epic show for Maison Margiela. And Kim Kardashian was clutching a cardigan reminiscent of the clutching of cardigans in the same Maison Margiela show. He should have caught both of those references.

Kim K's outfit was not a wardrobe malfunction. The idea was that she was in love and had the best night of her life in a garden with her lover. When she woke up the next morning, her hair was a mess and she wanted to cover up because it was morning, so she grabs her lovers sweater and left. Love it or hate it, it was not a wardrobe malfunction...it was very intentional. She did a Vogue getting ready for the Met and tried on the sweater and took pics.

I am so glad he mentioned Kim because so many people act like it wasn’t right. The cardigan though was actually part of the look. It wasn’t a wardrobe issue. It’s so irritating that so many people dismiss Kim when she actually was one of the only ones that was on theme. Which it’s funny that people would think she of all people wouldn’t research considering she knows everyone loves to nit pick her.
