2024 Mustang Dark Horse Review! | Not A GT350 Replacement

@MotorTrendWatch invited me out to their Car of the Year testing to see what cars were under consideration, how they do their testing and also try out some of the cars! It was super cool seeing how involved and thorough the testing is, plus all the various criteria different cars are evaluated against.
There are 6 different judged criteria: safety, value, advancement in design, engineering excellence, efficiency, and performance of intended function. This is how something like this Mustang Dark Horse can be compared to a Toyota Prius, not directly to each other, rather against how they should perform with the given criteria.
As a lifelong Mustang fan, I had to grab the keys to the new Mustang Dark Horse! This was actually my first time getting to drive the latest S650 generation of the Ford Mustang. Check out this quick first drive review of the Mustang Dark Horse and hear my thoughts on why it is not a GT350 replacement, but still a very nice iteration of the Mustang GT!

Good honest review!!! Some people have tested this back to back against the Mach I & GT 350 and the DH was faster than both cars on the track. Remember last year at VIR track the Mach I was faster there than the GT 350R. So Ford definitely improved the track capability & performance on the Dark Horse. Also in testing Ford engineers were faster with the Pirelli Trofeo RS tires than the Michelin Cup IIs hence the reason why the DH comes with the TROFEO RS tires. These tires also lasted longer at the track!!! The DH with a Whipple SC just recently outperformed the GT 500 up in Wisconsin. My neighbor has a Dark Horse & replaced several parts of the car and reduced the weight from 3870 pounds to 3630 making it lighter than the Corvette C8 Stingray Z51. Also Throttle House guys (Thomas) was quicker on their track in the DH compared to the C8 Z51. Car & Driver last month tested the DH at the 0-150-0 test and the DH had the 2nd overall shortest braking out performing cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo S & the Corvette Z06 in the braking portion of the test. 1 hundredths of a sec isnt enough to call it faster, and the dark horse vs a 350R probably would lose since 350R is less weight and wider rear wheel and stiffer suspension.

Might not be as good as a GT350 but atleast you dont have to worry about the motor blowing up

In all the videos of the Dark Horse it seems like the tires are carrying a lot of the car's performance. Would love to see comparisons where all cars are on equal tires, especially against similar cars like Mach 1, GT350, SS 1LE, M2. Nonetheless, props to ford for keeping the only muscle/pony car alive

Yeah I don't think the tires are carrying this cars performance. Do they make a difference? Sure. But I tend to believe that the engineering and mechanicals carry the performance.

It's about how the cars are actually sold. All inclusive. Yes, those tires would make all of them grip better. What came on it when you bought it brand new!, and then drove it off the lot.

@@EddieX It's too heavy (4000lbs) and feels like it, slower than a GT350, it is $73k optioned up but a $50k experience, and it's just not as special as a GT350 or ZL1 1LE. And dealers started calling me up offering me them at sticker, and there's a bunch of them for sale on the Internet, not a good sign. Plus, I was offered to order a new 911 GTS manual for sticker, and the test drive just blew me away and ruined every other manual transmission experience. I know, a different price point, but it's twice the experience and worth every penny. A nearly perfect manual transmission road car experience. The Dark Horse needed to either be $15k cheaper or more special from the GT.

@@XennialGuy: the Dark Horse is only 1700 dollars more than the 2022 Mach I but has numerous improvements over the Mach 1. You should be blaming biden for the fuckin ridiculous inflation that has caused everything to increase in price!!!!!!!! The DH is quicker on track every where over the Mach I, GT 350 & GT 350R. I have been watching every video on track times seeing the shocking results. Ford made many enhancements on the DH in handling over the previous Mustangs. My neighbor has a DH just finished reducing his weight down to 3630, lighter than the Corvette C8 Z51. My son owns a Ford dealership. The DH is a limited production car. Only 2 DH cars allocated to each Ford dealership across America. So recheck the numbers. I ordered my DH on 6 April and still waiting because of the UAW STRIKE!! Your facts are bogus!!! 🇺🇸😎👍💪

@@gordydexter2615 That's great if it meets your expected level of performance! Just didn't meet mine for the money. I've just driven and owned so many different cars that my perspective is spoiled. The good thing is there are 500 of them for sale across the country and half of them are listed for MSRP, so snag one up.

Passed on a DH at sticker for a used GT350 with ultra low mileage. Seemed the better deal.

from what i understand, better tires and brakes are why it outperforms the others. I'd like to see that comparison on the same rubber, but for now I still love my 350.

The Dark Horse all over I think is a better car. However how much psychologically performance comes with the Shelby name plate.

I think I'd rather spend $70k on the new M2 rather than a slightly fancier mustang. I built them both online and came to almost the exact same price. The M2 exterior has grown on me since the debut. I would miss the tremec and the exhaust sound.

There nice but dam pricey. Just looked at one fully loaded and after dealer mark up, over 80k. I would buy a used Shelby GT500 for that kinda money.

It is a great looking Mustang. Unfortunately the interior is not as good as last gen. Yeah you made a huge mistake selling your magnificent Mustang.

It's not a GT350 replacement and it was never intended to be. If anything, it's a Mach 1 replacement and it's proven to be quicker on track than that car.

Like everything about the car except the Hugh screens for the speedometer and tachometer,makes the car look like a star wars space ship. Should have left the classic Mustang gauges

Ford freaking NAILED the exterior design. The sharp body lines and chonk honches look better than ever. The touch screen climate is a major downgrade though.

Because it’s more engaging and provides a different kind of driving experience. It has its place for a certain type of car tho. I wouldn’t care for a manual transmission in a McLaren P1 for example.

It's the Mach 1 Lite. Slower, heavier and uglier. Not too ugly, since it shares the same front-end as the new Honda Accord.

@@tri3pleagent Ford never allowed the Mach 1 to be tracked...Ford didn't want a direct comparison between the Dork Horse and the Mach 1, for obvious reasons. Closest was TH, which as observed by Thomas, "...with the same tires, the Mach 1 would smoke the Dork Horse." Also, Randy Pobst tracked a Mach 1 vs SS 1LE, and the M1 beat it. And as we know, the SS 1LE is faster than the Dork Horse. There you go. Ford employees are hilarious, must be the Gen Zers involved with the Dork Horse.

@@ClickbaitMotorsports 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the same tires...they ran the cars as they come from the factory, period. The DH was faster than the Mach 1 and the 1LE. But you know...keep making excuses. Put up any video where it's slower stock for stock. I'll wait.
