Welcome to our stunning garden tour! In this video, we take a break from our normal DIY shed building routine to give you a relaxing 1.5+ hour escape to nature's beauty. Our garden is not a traditional Japanese garden, but it's filled with Japanese maples, conifers (including Japanese white pines and eastern white pines), hostas, and ginkgo trees that we've personally selected and nurtured over the years.
As you join us on our tour, we'll share insights into each plant's growth habit, growth rate, and best sun exposure, and you'll get to see our DIY hardscaping and landscaping that we've created ourselves. It's a truly unique and personalized experience that we're excited to share with you!
We hope you enjoy this journey through our breathtaking garden, and we encourage you to leave a comment and let us know which plants you loved the most. Don't forget to hit the like button and subscribe to our channel for more garden tours and DIY projects. And if you know someone who would appreciate our content, we'd be grateful if you shared this video with them.
Thank you for watching!

Just finished watching this. Love your spacious yard and how you are going about adding or moving trees as the circumstances suggest. Purple ghost is spectacular, as are a number of the others, such as pixie, summer gold, Jordan, Skeeter's Broom, and more. I can assure you that the time it takes you to do this is much appreciated by we viewers.

I am also a JM enthusiast, and I love your collection. I had a JM that started to get a lot of dieback. I had planted ferns nearby that over the years had surrounded the tree right up to the trunk. Last year I cleared the ferns away (about a foot all around the trunk) and this year I have no dieback. You are obviously very experienced in air layering and I would love to see a video on how you go about doing this and how long it takes to get a rootball the size you showed in this tour.

Thank you for watching!! We do agree about keeping plants at least a foot or more away from the base of the tree (this also allows room for the root flare to get air). We have a video on air layering here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hciXm8eImdjDnZs.html It only takes 60-90 days for the air layer to set up. We tend to go for larger branches vs smaller ones, but both can be successful. 🙂

The Aka Shigatsu Sawa is an amazing tree. When I remove the scorched light green leaves after the summer 100F-109F heat wave ends. I'll have bright red leaves till January.

At 34:00. Yes, the Fireglow does keep it’s red color throughout out the summer in 8B. If it’s in a somewhat shady spot it will turn a little greenish, but will still retain it’s red. My second favorite Japanese maple so far.

We’re looking forward to it!! It should get about eight hours of sun where it’s located along with late late afternoon just before sunset sun. We’ll see how it does. It had leafed out now, and is more of a true red compared to the other red trees in our planter bed (tamukeyama & skeeter’s broom). We’ll definitely include it more in our summer garden tour. 🤩

I was thinking about getting the Fireglow but wasn’t sure it could take the heat in South Georgia/ North Florida area . How hot does it get where you are in summer and for how long ?
@TronWynn
@TronWynn 4 ай бұрын
@@gregleach5833 Last year we had about 2 months of over 100F heat? The highest was ~109F. My 2 Fireglow’s were in metal planters sitting underneath a metal roofed gazebo with more than half of the leaves exposed to the sun till ~5PM. The Fireglows got some scorched leaves on them where they were exposed to the sun. They have been in that location for the past 5 years and they are still alive : ) . One caveat, is that I have a digital timer watering (with microsprays) my japanese maples 3 times a day for 2 mins each time when it’s over 100F. Note, that these Japanese maples are in metal planters. My thinking is to give them water during the hottest part of the day, and I only want the water to be concentrated on the top layer since that’s mostly where the roots of the Japanese maple reside. I don’t want a lot of water at the bottom of the planter, because that might increase the chances of root rot. The last watering is at around 3PM to give it enough time to somewhat dry up for the next day. In my opinion, I think Fireglows can take a decent amount of sun/heat compared to other Japanese maples. This year I’m setting up shade sails (with 90% UV filtering), and shading with sections of bamboo fencing on a few of my Japanese Maple’s West/South facing side. That’s an option if you’re running out of shaded areas in your lawn. FYI the 50% shade cloth didn’t work that well for me last year. I like Fireglows so much I bought 4 more 1 gal this year, so I don’ think you’ll regret buying one.

@@TronWynnThank you for the info . I did purchase it yesterday and planted where it will get about 5 hours of direct afternoon sun . All of the fireglows at the nursery had some scorching around the outside perimeter of each leaf but not enough to really look bad . I think it will do better now that it’s in the ground and mulched . My Summer Gold , Emperor One , Seiryu , Tymukeyama and Bloodgood seem to handle that really well . The Orange Dream doesn’t like it though but is still a beautiful tree . Fireglow is a beautiful tree !

Your Orange Dream gets crispy in the summer because Orange Dreams are weak trees. I’ve have my 2 Orange Dreams (in a planter) with 8 hours of sun, and will get scorched in temperatures above ~93F. I haven’t given them away because of the nice lighter green summer leaves, which turns yellowish tanning in the sun.
@buildingmodern

You might be on to something here. While not as bad as Aureum, Orange Dream isn’t known for doing well in the heat. It’s better in zones 7a and colder. 🙂

Megeitsu reminds me of 'Vitifolium', surprised you two don't have that in your garden (supposed to get quite big), insane big leaves sometimes 2-3x hand size. My Skeeter's broom, orange dream pushing out (the orange dream has definitely an orange glow in it during sun, not yellow yet like you two), My Aconitiflium is amazing, green leaves with a touch of pink, and 3 flowers, it's very small (2 feet) but 4 stems and very round, love it (Japonicums hard to change in shape, their starting branching shape will usually stay for all time. Osakasuki finally pushing out green leaves out of the red protection buds. I like how big the protection bugs are, looks cool, even if short during spring. It's one with 6 stems 1 feet from ground (2 feet high) wich why i bought it, don't want a single stem (would grow to fast). Also probably made a mistake, but bought what looks to be a 'Takao' 'seedling, it's a U shaped double step, then again splitting in U and W branch so basically 5 branch but all straight up. It's 2 meter in pot already (seedling quick growth rate), at the shop, 35 year olds are 6-7 meters), small green leaves, super cool in spring with red sides and protection buds, but later becomes very dark green, a colour wich i don't like very much (wich is partially why i love aconitifolium, always light green). Especially during rain days i love light colours as they keep vibrance in garden, dark leaves trees look very dull then. I might keep it in pot (takao) or plant, not sure yet. Fireflow seems amazing, excpet it might get 5 meter high, i can'"t have that in my small garden, Rhode island red seems perfect but scared the leave size may be small (i want a large Amoenum red leave next to osakasuki and to compare with small leave Skeeters' Broom. Geisha gone wild i would trade a shirazz with you xd Geisha is not available in EU, and Shirazz can get 7 meter (Geisha only 4), so sounds perfect as a variegated small tree in garden. Might 'dare' on Shirazz and cut if necessary.

Thanks for watching!! Hmmm, top 5? I’d say, in no particular order - purple ghost, shigitsatsu sawa, jordan, amber ghost, & right now butterfly. This changes during the year though. In the summer, others are better (like summer gold & sometimes emerald lace), and in the fall, others (like acontifolium, meigetsu, Seiryu, Sango Kaku, etc) 🙂

Hi Guys. After watching this, I’m sold on the Skeeters Broom JM. Would love to see a more depth comparison of Twormbly vs Skeeters broom. Here in zone 7 my summer gold has red rings as it leaves out & stays bright yellow in full sun. Great tour. Thanks

Thanks for watching! Sure, we’ll include a closer comparison of the skeeter’s & Twombly’s in our next video. In general, the Skeeter’s tends to be more red for longer than the Twombly’s. But, otherwise, they are very similar to each other. We got all of them on clearance (why we have so many). 😁 Absolutely love summer gold! The new location is suiting the front one nicely! 😁

Thanks for the great video. I was wondering if you purchased most of your Japanese Maples. I purchased most of mine online, between 1 and 3 gallons but got about 4 trees from a local nursery.
@buildingmodern
@buildingmodern 4 ай бұрын
Ours come from a mix of locations. A good deal come from a grower we knew, Roger Bell, who has since passed (he was a great man and will be missed). After that, some come from clearance bins, ‘bone yards,’ or otherwise trees that look like they won’t make it and were offered at a steep discount (our largest Mikawa was one of these). After that, it’s local nurseries where we mostly buy their $35 two-gallon whip trees. That’s where our Amber ghost, and purple ghosts came from, for example. (They are now $45 - we’ve stopped buying them due to this price) That’s most of them in the above. The Germaine’s gyration came from Mr. Maple years ago, though it was a 7g at the time, and we did buy it in person. Same for our much smaller acontifolium (the big one was a super clearance plant from a local nursery) I hope this helps! It’s mostly a mix, and we’ll travel for a good deal 😎

Thanks for watching! That’s just very old painted pine that Anna didn’t want to ‘waste the paint’ on (the previous color of the house was red) 🤣🤣🤣 … we need to replace that entire structure, part of the supports have rotted out 😅 We’ve had our geisha gone wild for about ten years now, but, we got it at nearly the size it is now. We have two, and both barely push growth. They have about as much die back as they push out. They’re about four years in the ground in their current location. If I was to buy one again, I’d go with Shirazz - it’s supposed to be more vigorous. 🙂

@@buildingmodern I normally purchase the largest trees I can find that can be placed in my cargo van, I'm older than you guys. I did purchase a 2 gal geisha gone wild. I just loved your 'Aka shigitatsu sawa' , so very beautiful, reminds me of my amber ghost, my favorite of the ghost...I'm thinking on buying another amber that is a 30 gal but $700, it's very nice. I see I can purchase a 'Aka shigitatsu sawa' a 3 gal, I'm thinking it's a slow grower but yours has inspired me to go ahead with it. Happy to watch your show, beautiful environment... I'll have to treat myself and do it again...wishing you the most wonderful.
