How to fix lawn dips while fixing your tired lawn. A simple guide to lawn levelling.
In this video, I will be showing you how to fix all the various dips and bumps in your lawn. This is carried out during the renovation stage of creating a nice new lawn.
The dip levelling process begins at 23:45, however if you watch all the video parts you can see what order and how I carry out each part (and why).
The end result will be a lawn that looks so much better, and will be much flatter and easier to maintain.
0:00 How to fix lawn dips while fixing your tired lawn
0:08 Assessing what needs to be done
2:04 Unloading - Getting everything where it needs to be
2:46 The 2 parts of a lawn to think about
5:17 Explaining what aeration is and scarification and why we do them
7:09 Hollow tine lawn aeration
7:47 Scarification of the lawn
8:51 Clearing up the thatch and moss
10:15 hand scarifying round the edges with the Wolf Garten tool
12:12 How do you know when enough is enough scarifying (when you are only scarifying you don't need to go to this extent)
19:52 Aerating and scarifying the side and rear lawns
20:06 OMG - lunch was amazing!
23:45 LEVELLING the dips
33:22 The rebuilding of the lawn outline (fert, seed, dress)
35:01 Fertiliser spreading using my hand held spreader
36:27 Spreading seed on the lawn
38:37 Spreading compost over the seeds
41:01 Using a lute then a roller to work the mix on, and firm it all down
42:44 Seed, dress, lute and press the side lawn
43:02 Seed, dress, lute and press the front lawn
43:30 Applying Emerald Green to the lawn, and final thoughts
The following tools are what I personally use during my lawn renovations:
In this video, I mention using a Wolf Garten hand scarifying rake and also a compost spreader.
You can get the rake head here: amzn.to/3iReFMN and handle here: amzn.to/3tV9Jgr (these come with a 10-year warranty)
You can get the compost spreader here: www.gardenimports.co.uk/produ... or available here on Amazon: amzn.to/4aJoKUX
Compost used for topdressing:

Other tools used:
Hand held lawn aerator: We love the JNJ premium one here (amzn.to/42PFvLm) but it's sold out - you can watch the review of it here : • A More EFFICIENT Hand ...
in-depth hand-held aerator comparisons: Premium ones: • I bought 2 premium law... Budget ones: • Testing 4 BEST Manual ...
Lawn lute: amzn.to/4cLUVVG
Leaf rake (for raking up the thatch): amzn.to/3J9uYSl
Hand spreader for applying pre-seed fertiliser: amzn.to/49Ajyly
Drop spreader for applying the seeds: amzn.to/3TWzw3E
Pre-seed fertiliser: amzn.to/3VOmabW
Emerald Green (my own product): lawnright.co.uk/shop
Roller: amzn.to/4cJGhyb
Heavy duty leaf grabber: amzn.to/3TOYjq4
Music used:

Evergreen Fields - Tape Machines,
Magnetic Fields - Tomas Skyldeberg,
Evergreen - Dye O

The only thing better than learning from someone who explains as well as you, and is as clearly knowledgable as you, is getting to listen to your very charming and lovely accent. So nice to know what I've been doing right, and what I can do in addition to improve my lawn. I recently moved to the Pacific Northwest (Washington State, USA). My lawn has shady spots full of moss and sunny spots full of weeds because it was stressed by lack of water a couple of years ago. I wish I could hire you to help me out, but at least I feel like I know what to do now! Thanks so much!

I am in Washington also and am 77 and my daughter is letting me landscape and work in her yard. She hates yard work. My son mows for her but like your lawn, hers is full of clover and some tiny weeds that flower and dandelions. I need to do all of the things he just showed us but don't have any tools like he has so will have to improvise. I hope it's not too late to get started. I did see some stuff at Home Depot that is soil with seed in it that I might get to join a couple of the steps he showed us. Thank heavens her front and backyard aren't a huge lawn. I first need to find that aerator tool. Wish me luck.

the largest issue in the pacific northwest is drainage...Very very few lawns were built... they at best had top soil placed on top of what was there and added turf or seed. Lawns are built! there are many people and companies who show you how to build from baser to PGA grass or Lawn Bowling grass!

Shawn you have such a professional and caring approach to your customers. One really gets the sense that this matters to you, and if you need to go the extra mile, then you do, to get the job done properly. 3 lawns in one day, with rain, and on your own looked like a right shift! And fully deserving of the bacon sandwiches and custard! How were the back muscles after that?? Look forward to the review video in 6 weeks! Have a restful Sunday

I really admire your attention to detail and your choice of what tools to use to help you. That woman's garden and patio work is beautiful, and I'm sure the lawn will be fantastic. It was incredible how much thatch you removed. I am surprised you didn't use it for compost somewhere. I look forward to seeing what it looks like in a few weeks. Thank you.

I do not even know why i am here, but glad i stayed, you have a very nice manner, and deliver a good presentation of your work I was thinking of getting artificial grass in the back garden, but i am now reconsidering my options!

Definitely get the real thing. The lead (used for the green color) and other materials in artificial lawn is showing up in more reports of toxic chemicals in our soils. Especially if you have children or pets that will be playing on the lawn

What a great video. You worked so hard. Such a nice customer also. I learned a ton from you. I am 77 and redoing my daughters lawn and landscaping front and back yard for her. It is my passion. I can't use all the tools you did but will improvise. We are on a budget here. Thank you and look forward to what it looks like in 3 weeks. Please do an update.

This care you’re giving to what appears to be a rather complex lawn is levels above what I’ve seen as typical landscaping work in the U.S. We tend to do mowing and very little else. Oh, yes. I do see amazing lawns here, but I also wonder how costly it is for the full TLC someone like you provides.

Watched this from start to finish, really insightful. You explain all aspects so clearly, I have a question on scarifying & aeration. I had turf put down roughly 2 years ago, it isnt spongy but the benefits of aeration and scarifying are clear. Should I leave it a few more years before attempting?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 7 күн бұрын
Hi it's possible to scarify the same year if a lawn needs it, so you can definitely give it a go when it suits you once it gets a little spongy.. Or very light and often to keep the spongy layer down
