The Tesla Model 3 got a refresh for the 2024 model year, to make it even more efficient but was it enough to keep its position as the benchmark EV all other car manufacturers have to beat?

Yeah but he get's half of it wrong because he's just not that familiar with the car. Every Model 3 owner knows how to adjust follow distance in ACC. And he reads the efficiency while cruising at highway speed and extrapolates that out as the range of the car. And saying that using a phone as key weird? It's not weird - it's convenient and one of Tesla's best features. If you're a reviewer you're supposed to know this stuff. Sure, ding it for the lack of stalks. But the speedo? You drive it for a week and you get used to it.

Fair representation of Harry's feelings, I am sure. For myself, I both admire and desire. My early 2018 Model 3 was, and still is, a great driver's car IMO, with very good range (310 miles EPA new, 299 miles now). Upgrading to the latest would be nice, but I am still very happy with my 6 year old model.

You could read this comment and say I had crappy cars lol. But it reminds me of them. Visibility is incredible. My first electric car. 55 years old here and the overall process from ordering to delivery to charging is miles away from anything I ever lived. Took me a year to decide and when I was about to pull the trigger they announced the 2024 one! The sound system, the app, everything is great. If you hesitate reminder it took me a year of searching the web, talking to owners etc…Thanks for your review!!!

Thank you for putting focus on efficiency. For most commutes people don't really need big ranges, 250-300 really is enough for 90+% of use. And that's where efficiency becomes a key metric. Needing almost 30-40% more energy to drive around will certainly add up over the lifetime of a car in charging cost.
@BlazeFirereign
@BlazeFirereign 16 күн бұрын
To be fair, if you're mostly charging on cheap overnight EV rates, you're not going to be paying much more to drive an "inefficient" EV. Say you're doing 10k miles per year, that's 2500kWh in a car that manages 4mi/kWh, or 3333kWh in a car managing 3mi/kWh. 833kWh more. Cheap overnight rates are about 7.5p/kWh at the moment, let's say 10p/kWh to allow for occasional not-cheap or rapid charging, and that's...£83 a year. Obviously, if you're stuck using expensive chargers, that changes the maths a lot. (Then again, if you're stuck using expensive chargers, then an EV probably isn't right for you at the moment.) That's not to say that efficiency isn't important. Where it matters is allowing a lower-capacity, less expensive, lighter battery to reach that 250-300 miles of range. I believe the base Model 3 uses a 60kWh pack (with less energy dense but, theoretically, more durable LFP chemistry), whereas rivals with similar ranges often have significantly larger packs, usually with (dense but less durable) NCM chemistry.

I drove one of these with the long range battery pack just a few weeks ago - from Auckland to Whangārei in NZ, the long way around. 2 and a half hours each way, a combination of highway and twisty roads, driving normally with the odd squirt on the accelerator, 2 iPhones on charge and the stereo with subwoofer getting a bit of a workout. We got home at the end of the day with 31% battery remaining, it was pretty good!

I travelled throughout North and South Islands in a rented 3 SR+. While it doesn't have the performance that I'm used to with Teslas, I wouldn't have it any other way. Supercharging and DCFC was something to be desired but I see that it's improving all the time. ChargeNet was a lifesaver even though it topped out at 50kW (at the time). My only regrets were not being able to visit the West Coast and Northland - mainly due to time constraints. Next time, hopefully.

A couple of comments from an owner of the previous gen Model 3: - The seats are weird. When you first sit in them they seem uncomfortable, and you struggle to get a good setting. But on long distance - 2-3hrs - they are extremely comfortable. The only seats that don't give me backache, in 30 years of driving - It is not a B-road car. It is a very good A-road car though, with the ability to make very rapid progress and overtake anything holding you up - Long distance travel with a family is totally easy. There is masses of luggage space (and the frunk is really useful), the range is very good (2hrs between charges on 80mph motorways, 3.5-4hrs on A-roads), and the tesla charging network is everywhere. - Dog mode is not a gimmick as it first seems to be. It is actually incredibly useful if you have a dog. - Whilst I personally like the minimalist design, the stalkless concept is a very poor idea, and actually a deal-breaker for me. I won’t replace my model 3 with a new one whilst they stick to that idea.

Chris, that’s the UK way. Europeans don’t signal until they’re on the island, then they either signal as they go round, or just before they get off. This way, no one waiting has any idea which exit you’re taking and they all have to wait for you. This is backwards thinking, but it IS how it’s done in France, Germany, Belgium etc....I get beeped or flashed at if I use the UK (correct) method before getting onto the island itself as the locals are unsure of my intentions.

Had a Model 3 for four plus years and would say this was a fair and accurate review. Still the best car I've owned and my favourite. What the review can't really cover is the excellent servicing Tesla can provide. It's so nice just booking through the app, outlining the fault and dropping off to a service center, again not having to talk to anyone and either getting in your loaner car or using other transport etc. Twice my wife kicked off the seat controls on the passenger seat, lead right foot in the wrong way and twice Tesla came to my house and fixed it free of charge. I've had the car serviced once in 4 years, with Cleevely EV, again at my house. It costs pennies to run, love pre-heating on a hot day or pre-warming on a cold one. The app always works more or less and is improved. My VW app is a royal pain and I've given up on it. Second hand Teslas are some of the best value cars out there IMHO.

Hey Harry, enjoyed your take on the Model 3! Couple of notes: * You can change the following distance by clicking one of the little wheels on the steering wheel sideways (not sure which one it is in your RHD model). * Besides the bigger battery you mentioned the 10.000£ upgrade also gets you a much more powerful dual motor awd setup, alcantara interior and a much better sound system.

The constant free upgrades are another benefit. In six months of my owning a M3LR (pre-facelift), Tesla has added to my car items such as blind-spot monitoring, the ability to play podcasts, 3D Lidar scanning of the surroundings when parking and, best of all last week, fully adaptive headlights in place of the simple 'auto high-beam'. Fair review I'd say. Drove an early Model 3 a couple of weeks ago. Was like a comfy go-kart. More fun than I expected. 4.1 mile per KW: a little over 160mpg equiv. Interesting fact, say a comfortable 50KWh in that battery, that's the same stored energy as 5 litres of diesel (!).

To suggest there's nothing about that makes you want one, totally misses the point, it's a day to day car to perform mundane tasks. For me it shows an ev can not only be best in its class but better more useable than any ice equivalent.

The seasonal differences cannot be underestimated, I have a Taycan and it’s efficiently is pretty much half during the winter months, during which I believe you tested the i5 and Eletre.

My model 3 which I’ve had for 3 winters has a lifetime average of 250wh/mile - in winter it loses about 10% range. Remember this one (and mine) have a LiPO4 battery unlike your Taycan which also degrades range much much more slowly and is happy being left plugged in to 100% all the time.

@@romeandcurry6915-That’s very dependent on your winter. Up here in northern Scandinavia my model 3 loses a lot more than 10% in the winter. But we get -17C in the mornings.

12:30, WLTP is not a Tesla claimed range. It is mandated by your regulators.

I heard in a video today that WLTP is done at 29mph /46kph and 70°F (21°C); don't know if that's true, but it's certainly an optimistic test parameter 😂

thanks for the really fair review of the refresh m 3 Harry. To be fair, I think the price differential for larger battery includes front motor as well? I believe there is a long range rear wheel drive recently available though. You ought to check the performance m3 when available shortly, it is said to be quite the car and will be curious for your take. thanks so much for your reviews ~ Roger
