What is this thing?
This is really the first TRUE GR product
The 86 is largely Subaru
The Supra is largely BMW
This and the GR Yaris are the first real dedicated GR cars
What’s new for 2024?
This thing came out last year and made a BIG splash
2nd model year KEEPS the Circuit grade (here)
Blue Flame paint
Blue interior stitching
Black ext decals
Lighter multi-spoke wheels
The Exhaust
Three tips, one for each cylinder
Unlike the type R, they’re spaced out
So no matter where you get rear ended the exhaust system is getting rekt
Engine
Not a 4 cylinder like everything else
A retune of the exclusive rally homologation GR YAris
1.6T 3 cylinder
300 hp and 275 lbft
Will talk amore behind the wheel later
The flares
Rear hips are so dramatic they flare onto the doors (supra)
Squared off at the back like a boat
Front fenders flared as well with gill
The hood
The dead giveaway
Core trims have no hood detailing
Circuit and Morizos have scoops
They also have carbon fiber roofs
The circuit also gets a bigger and blacker rear wing
The grille
It’s obviously huge
But if you look through it it also has GR Four painted on the radiator
GR Four
New AWD system and we’ll talk more about it behind the wheel
Embossed in side skirts too
Blue Flare paint gets the skirt decals
Circuit trim gets LSDs front and rear
Core trim does NOT
Rear cupholders
The rear seats are decent size
There’s three seatbelts unlike teh type r
And also 4 cupholders…seems like a lot
Trunk problem
This is a hot hatch so it’s meant to be practical
It is, but it’s significantly smaller than type r trunk
They moved the battery to under the floor for weight
So the floo is a lot higher and eats room
The Blue and GR interior
GR logos everywhere inside
BLUE stitching everywhere, but not on the dash
Courtesy of the Blue Flare paint
iMT
Manual is the only way you can get this car
It has rev matching
But unlike most cars, it doesnt default to having rev matching on
DONT love the manual here
Throws are weird
Pedal box is ok
Safety sense
This car gets toyota safety sense 2.5 WITH adaptive cruise
Something you CANT get on a manual BMW M2
Digital cluster
12.3 inches
Track mode
Customizable three tiles
No music and no map tho
Luxuries
Heated seats - circuit gets these awesome suede seats
Heated steering wheel
Wireless charger
Center screen
Decent size, kinda basic
Get wireless acp and aa tho
Connects better than the Honda system
Circuits get nav - who cares cuz car play
Center dial
This doesnt actually control your drive mode like a normal corolla
It’s your torque split
Can send UP to 40, 50, or 70 to rear, but not at all times
Drive mode tab is tiny and in front of shifter
Odds & Ends
No center console..annoying
Rear view mirror feels weirdly upscale
Auto-blips throttle so hard to stall

I’m absolutely in love with mine. Wish I got the blue flame in 2024. But my premium black is really growing on me. This is up there with the legendary Toyotas. This engine is so good and responds well to mods. I only have a CAI, BOV, tune and set my valve to always open and I can feel a difference. I honestly can’t go anywhere without someone curious about the car. My favorite is those who HAVE lived under a rock and have no idea this is a turbo 3cyl and when I mention AWD they loose it.

RacerX makes shifter bushings that cure 99% of the shifting issues - I say this from personal experience. Next up is getting something to limit the pitch mount movement as that also directly impacts shifting from gear to gear - this is next up on my list of fixes. You can either buy inserts from PowerFlex or go with something like the Delta X pitch stop. I'm not keen on the alignment myself, but that is something that I will resolve in time. :)

I have to say the color of the paint is Blue Flame, not Blue Flare. And the car will rotate but not in the example of turning onto an onramp like you did. The chassis and tires provide more than enough traction in those situations. If you know how to transfer the weight though and rotate the car, it will do it and keep doing it, I've seen it and I've been in a car while it was spinning around. 🤣 I will say that the car is an absolute blast to drive and it shines on back roads and twisty mountain roads. It's more fun to drive on these back roads than any of its competitors from when I drove them all, that's why I bought one.

@jimsgaragetoys

@@MK3504 Nope, I've driven them all hard in the canyons and the back country mountain roads and the GRC was the most fun and best in that situation. I'll give the edge to the FL5 on the track though. The EN isn't better in any way over either the GRC or FL5. The transmission, shifter and clutch isn't as good either on the EN. I also noticed the larger size of the FL5 and EN over the GRC on the back roads. The GRC was more nimble.

@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys 12 күн бұрын
@@MK3504 You can't handle the truth because you own a FL5? I drove them all and I can only think that you haven't driven them all on some serious back roads. The FL5 weighs in at 3188 lbs and my GRC weighs 3262 lbs so I wouldn't call that significantly less. With AWD it can put the power down and with and weather the difference gets even bigger with the GRC. Then add in heated seats, heated steering wheel, an actual hand brake, a true hot hatch design, seating for 5, not 4, and the ability to use it year round in any weather far out weigh the FL5. This is the real world, not a fantasy world that so many FL5 owners seem to live in.

The thing about the Type R is that Honda made a gearbox so good that other manufacturers just can't compete with it. Honda easily makes the best manual gearboxes in the industry along with Porsche, but Porsches are considerably more expensive than your typical Honda. I don't mind the little clunkiness of the GR Corolla as I plan to get one in a few years, just as long as it's not as clunky as your typical Subaru transmission.

Your shifting is the issue, not the car. Use less force on your arm and wrist when shifting, if u delicately hold the shifter with minimal left to right pressure, the shifter will naturally pop out of second and head straight up into the middle gate into third. Shifting in or out of first, second, or fifth and sixth will require left or right pressure respectively.

What about the rear diff overheating issue, that’s a big problem
@shooter45
@shooter45 17 күн бұрын
It's way overblown and repeated mostly by people who have never even driven a GRC, much less owned one. A majority of owners will never overheat the rear clutch pack (which is what overheats, not the rear diff) unless they do heavy track driving in hot weather. Even if the rear clutch pack overheats, the car is still completely drivable in FWD mode until it cools back down. For the very few people that are buying the GRC as a dedicated track car, there are aftermarket solutions to address the rear clutch pack heating up.

The Altis isn't available in the US & from what I know of the Altis, it's basically a Corolla, and from what I know about the Altis GR Sport.... It's just a basic Corolla with nice rims. It's still using the 2ZZ, which is a rock solid dependable engine, but not high performance at all(I'm sure there are ways to increase it's performance)and it's attached to a cvt only.

I think GR Corolla has a better value as it has AWD and it is actually cheaper than Civic Type R. CTR prices are crazy like close $80K for a used one as there are so few of them. Also, having a bit less power GR Corolla shouldn't have a wheel hop at launch as it has AWD unlike CTR. However, CTR has overall more power and torque.

I’ve never missed any gear in months of ownership outside of the first couple weeks when I was getting used to it. Not sure what to tell you. Maybe there’s something going on with this gearbox but if you’re on neutral then 3 and 4th are exactly up and down which is what I would expect Also if you break something going from 3 to 2 then that’s because you are hitting the rev limit on 3rd which will never happen during normal driving unless you’re changing gears at 6k+ rpms
@kengit2
@kengit2 18 күн бұрын
@@fpsinvader spot on. I had same issue in the first weeks of ownership. Did a little research and changed my hand placement. The GR Corolla is unforgiving when it comes to gear shifting. To solve the issue you have to be very clinical and proper shifting all the time is achieved by proper hand placement. In addition, the mistake I see the reviewer is making on this video is pushing straight from 2 to 3. You push from 2 to neutral then neutral to 3. Whenever changing banks a split second pause is needed. 3 to 4 should be the easiest shift. If you are missing 3 to 4 then hand placement and or over gripping the gear lever is the issue.
