The new turbo-four and hybrid powertrain help the fourth gen Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro sip fuel better than many other trucks. However, hybrids don't excel when running steady state at high speeds, and some people are going to expect better numbers.

@Jomonji 🤦‍♂️....go review Toyota's EBITDA as a % from 10 yrs ago to today. That will tell you all you need to know about pricing. The "production in Mexico means prices should be cheaper" isn't rooted in anything but non-business minded people's imagination. I'm not dissing you, I'm just saying that line of thinking isn't real in the business world. Comparing EBITDA as a % will begin to inform you about how pricing is affecting the entire company. Furthermore, you do realize that, as in every company, the most popular products must pay not only for themselves (Toyota has spent billions on the redesign of their trucks) but for the other products that either lose money or don't make much. It's not just the Tacoma pricing paying for itself. It must make up for the less profitable Cotlrolla and such.

I've had my 23 colorado ZR2 for over 6 months and it gives me 20mpg at 70mph and 18mpg at 80, I almost always average 18-19mpg per tank unless towing. On a road trip I can go 330-350 miles between fill ups and still have 2g to spare with its 21g tank. I'm about to take the truck on a 3k miles road trip through Arizona, Utah, and Colorado including a few days in Moab. I really love the truck and it suits my needs perfectly. I don't see how Toyota can justify charging $14k more for a TRD Pro with such strong competition from GM and Ford.

@@BrickyardPowerMan WA state here. Ironically, it'd be rare to not see a dealer markup here. 15k required add-ons for a prius and we're still running 10k add-ons for the outgoing 4-runner. Lexus has a 4k discount on specific models but they still charge a 4.5k non-negotiable add-on package. Audi e-tron 10k markup (literally can't even sell but dealers here refuse to move). Literally anything you can imagine has a markup here. If I lived in the midwest maybe that would be a different story.

@@sueddo2634 Wow, that is crazy. I bought my wife a 2023 GX460 in March 2023 with $8K off MSRP (Indiana). I'm looking at a 2024 Tundra Limited (loaded) or Platinum) and getting offers of $9-11K off. Was in Houston last week with the $11K off. $8K(ish) off MSRP and 11.5K off their add-ons but they were actually valuable or realistic add-ons. My preferred dealer is offering me $9K off a Platinum now. Going to look at it Wednesday. Not my #1 or #2 color choice so we'll see. Just told them both (Houston and local IN dealer) that I wasn't paying these BS prices. Everyone knows Toyota is overpriced right now. They got themselves in this situation riding the 2021/2022 price increase train (MY 2022/2023 models) and not certain they know how to lower them. Tesla lowered their prices and got sued. Funny story, the Houston dealer tried to tell me he uses this special distributor who builds vehicles special that other disti's don't - like I give a Fu@K ....Don't care about the TSS or whatever. I want what I want. He tried telling me he was bigger than my local dealer and could offer me more - I drive 3 hours where i live in Indiana passing ~12 Toyota dealers to go to my guy - I've bought ~12 Toyotas from him in 8 years cause he doesn't make my life difficult - I call, we talk, he sells, I buy! Houston has gotta do better than that! Was in Houston last week on a business trip and if we could have worked out the details I would have driven this sweet silver Tundra loaded Limited home. It fell apart as I needed my trade for the equity and sales tax savings which was 900 miles away. Oh well, my local dealer who is 3 hours away is searching for my special truck now.

It shouldn't be one or the other. In fact, the definition of "Efficient" means to achieve maximum productivity or output with minimal waste. With a good hybrid system, they should be able to increase power while also gaining fuel economy and improving overall efficiency. In the Taco's case, its IFM hybrid is just not that efficient. Same is true for the Tundra's Hybrid system. That's odd because Toyota's other hybrid systems are great at improving fuel economy and increasing power at the same time.

@austinwade3194 17 күн бұрын
Since it should be electronically operated, you should be able to program it to whatever you need. For fuel economy, ideally it would help you get up to speed/acceleration since that is where most of the MPG suffers around town. For highway driving the Hybrid system would need to be a little more nuanced to help MPG, such as assisting when going up grade. If all you were looking for is a more powerful tacoma, it might be cheaper to buy 3rd gen taco and do an engine swap with tundra (V35A-FTS twin-turbo V6), you'd probably achieve better gas mileage than the 4th gen hybrid tacos as well.

I used to love midsize trucks (owned a Frontier) but don’t understand them now when a 4 cylinder hybrid tacoma is just as expensive and just as thirsty as a V8 half ton, without the space or comfort. This also makes me nervous we won’t see 25 on the new Land Cruiser.

The EPA ratings are done usually at 60mph, not 70. Also, with a turbo vehicle, you need to drive at the proper RPM that doesn't generate boost. If we could see the numbers of the torque curve on that Tacoma, we would know at what speed it should be driven for fuel economy.
@allentechpt9026
@allentechpt9026 17 күн бұрын
The EPA's test cycle isn't just a steady given speed, it involves a range of speed and engine loads. They even including on-ramps. The engine very much sees boost when completing the test cycle.

What are you talking about “when you get into the 2.7 GM trucks, you’re down in to the 10’s”?!?! I have 23 Silverado 2.7 turbo crew cab 4x4 LT stock with 20 inch wheels and at 70 mph with outside temp in the 60’s I get constantly over 25 mpg avg on a full tank. At 83 mph it gets 21.5 and in the city it gets 19.5. The best I got on a full tank (around 500miles) is 26.1 mpg avg. It weighs more than the Tacoma, rated to tow 9k lbs and rated to carry 1890 lbs in the bed.

The real concern: is the product reasonably priced? No where near it for this complete redesign that still has to prove itself. If careless people keep “consuming” with their emotions for the newest thing, then it gives manufacturers the incentive to keep ripping people off. So you become part of the problem when you consume overpriced products. Car manufacturers are trying to make up for “lower” profits. They definitely aren’t losing money. Just not making as much, which is unacceptable for the greedy.
@ryansheard8092

@Strawman333 🤦‍♂️....another clueless rant about pricing. Go research Toyotas P&L and compare their EBITDA as a % vs 10 years ago. It's about the same. Pricing isn't from manufacturers "greed". BTW, they have every right AND responsibility to make a reasonable profit. For most successful businesses, they should be making 8%-12%. Anyway, it's misplaced anger over pricing. Pricing problems are the result over 80+ years of government spending and voter/Americans demanding government give handouts. Period.
