I test out the Triumph Daytona 660 in both full power and LAMS versions for the Australian launch, with the two offering a fresh option in the 650 class of bikes, that while not as premium as a modern Street Triple, has plenty to offer for their sub $15K ride-away price here in Australia.

Nice review as always. Just picked up a trident a few weeks back due to the more naked style.

@@mathewcross4799hey man I’m 15, 16 in a few months and looking to ride as soon as I can (16 and 9 months in nsw) do you think it would be possible to start on a Daytona 660 or trident 660?

Looks good first impressions! I watched this just after the Bennetts Uk shoot out that featured it too and really loved the engine. Tbh I kinda hate my inner consumer that wants the suspension, the power, etc. lol in reality you can always upgrade the suspension, I’m just happy we’re getting a full power version. So annoying when they don’t even offer them. Honestly I don’t even know what the point of the Honda 650 platform is in Australia lol. Hope you get one for a longer review Chris, I’m definitely interested. Up until now the only thing close to it in a similar class was thr RS660 and too expensive, too race focused geometry and ride for the road imho. I tried to like the R7, but if I’m honest it just isn’t that comfortable or fun. Still hoping Honda drop a cbr750 though

Yep that engine is a real gem, it's not quite up there with a Street Triple on the chassis side of things, but like you say, you can upgrade the suspenders if you end up feeling like you need it, so there's the battle between what you really need, and what you ideally want, with pricing a big factor there. A CBR750 or CB750R or something along those lines would make sense with that new twin too, especially if they keep it more casual like the Daytona, so everyday riders can get the fairings without the full supersport ergo, and priced close to the Hornet.

@@MotoJournoKrissorry if I missed this, but is the donk basically the same as the limited 660 they’ve been doing ever since the LAMS came in, or were these redesigned at some point? You just reminded me I have ridden the old stripple 660! If they did offer other full power bikes that trident might be pretty appealing too. They look so good and aren’t very expensive really, tbh I think I used the restriction as an excuse not to buy one when they came out lol

@@Bobby-wn5yr I'd guess it's built off the same engine, it's been a while since I tested the Street Triple 660 (maybe 2014 or 2015!) and that was prior to the more modern versions with all the electronics and RbW. Back then, the engine was a bit more fiery and aggressive than the Trident version. I'm not sure if the Trident version was closer to the LAMS Street Triple that's been available more recently, as the last one I tested was the Street Triple 765 R. The Trident with the full power engine though... would be very nice to see. I hope what I heard on the grapevine comes true there!

I always wondered if it’s possible to restrict a bike with only ECU tune, without physical, so to speak, parts like smaller intakes to the restrict the air engine can take like MT07 for example.. (maybe i messed up the naming here, but you get my point) 🙂
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 13 күн бұрын
Yep that's how ride modes work on RbW bikes, with different power maps. Rain modes often restrict outright peak power in that way, and/or throttle response for a much slower and more doughy reaction to throttle inputs, making the bike more docile. There's also bikes in different markets with different performance or redline with this method, generally to meet country-specific emissions or sound requirements, where an ECU flash can unleash more performance.

Hi Kris, you hit the nail on the wall with the LAMS version hitting an ECU controlled max. Interesting that you found the LAMS one to offer more down low, as being ECU controlled they are identical in performance characteristics up until the ECU starts dialling power down at around 6,250 rpm. Perhaps more of a but Dyno effect as nothing else is different (just like derestricting the old Street Triple 660).

@MotoJournoKris 15 күн бұрын
Some of the guys were doing rolling tests on the open road at the launch, the LAMS was pulling away from the full power down low. Which mirrored the difference I actually noticed between the two bikes.

@@MotoJournoKris All you need to do Kris is look at the Dyno charts for each as this backs up what I mentioned 100%. You of all people should know this, plus Triumph also agrees as it’s the very reason why it’s one of the simplest machines to go from A2 to full power.

If you're just after a supersport that's not a bad idea, these fall more into the sport-tourer kind of area. More relaxed, more comfortable, better for long rides and commuting.

To be able to restrict them to A2 in the EU they can't make more than 70 kW, otherwise they need to release a specific low power model that can be restricted, like Suzuki did with the GSX-S950. So that seems to be a bit of a glass ceiling on performance caused by Europe's legislation for anything likely to be popular for A2. At least where they don't want to release multiple models.

Hard to judge because we swapped bikes halfway through the day and I didn't see what each bike took for a refill. I'd want a few longer rides to average it out with similar refills to put a figure to it.
