This is a much needed review, I was wondering why our local dealers in the Philippines were selling this bike with such a big discount at the moment. They still have plenty of new “old” stock. 21/22 models are going for 195000 peso which is $5270 Aud. Great value at that price considering they were 325000 php ($8785 Aud) a few months ago. Despite the savings I like the look of the new one a lot more! Does the new one have USB charing?

Kris, I would appreciate your take on the following. I’m up for purchasing another bike. I can see you’ve had seat time on three out of the 4 that i have on my list. I’m after a fun naked bike. Obviously fun can be had by speed, character, looks, sound etc. so excuse the 50/50 split of naked bike styles. RE Shotgun RE Super Meteor Honda Hornet Suzuki GSX-8S Knowing what you know, which do you think you would ride more often if all four were parked in your garage? And why? I’m not asking you to pick for me, I know that’d be silly. More to potentially see a view from a different angle from someone who has tried the different bikes. Price difference will be about 2k and isn’t the issue. Pretend they all cost the same.
@MotoJournoKrisКүн бұрын
I'd personally go the Hornet of the three I've ridden, but would want to test the GSX-8S to see how it stacks up between those two bikes. I still like something a little sportier, despite how good both the Shotgun and Super Meteor are. I think I'd go the Super Meteor if I'd hit the cruising stage of my riding journey, it's incredibly comfortable, good power and should get a big tick of approval for two-up. The big factor in the Hornet's favour was the engine, I'd definitely be out getting into trouble with that bike more often, out of those options!
@florme6494Күн бұрын
@@MotoJournoKris thank you Kris, believe it or not that’s the way I was leaning too. Thank to for the input. From what I can gather the RE’s have amazing personality but lack that reliability. With a 3 year warranty I’m not too worried but I still don’t want the inconvenience of constantly having to bring it to the shop. I wasn’t worried that they lack the speed but I do enjoy hitting limits in the corners so obviously that was a concern too. I like the Suzuki visually better. But I hear the engine of the Hornet is the most fun to explore every time you go for a ride. The electronics also seem slightly better. The weight is better. Cornering has better clearance. More nimble and easy to move around (off the bike). Better for filtering. I like the whole wolf in sheep clothing look to it. When I look at the naked hornet due to its size it excites me because it’s basically the engine with a couple of wheel thrown on. It’s the most naked bike of the naked bike category if you know what I mean. I’m gathering it’s the most playful with the thinner rear tyre, insane engine that will power wheelie, with egging you on sound, and balanced suspension. Whereas the Suzuki is the most sensible. Yet firmer ride, lower ground clearance, lacks a note, heavier but sturdier. I predict out of all 4 mentioned I wouldn’t be as excited to ride it. Looks Meteor Shotgun 8S Hornet Everything else Hornet Shotgun S8 Meteor Well, I’ll try and go for a test ride, hopefully this weather comes good soon. Thanks again!
@MotoJournoKris14 сағат бұрын
@@florme6494 There's definitely that thrill factor with the Hornet if you ask me, although I'm a bit biased having bought the same engine in the Transalp! I think it'd benefit from some mods too, to try and spruce up the looks side of things, and with the price I think that's easy to justify.

Funny seeing rookie motorcycle riders call these beginner bikes. These are not beginner bikes folks. Check your egos brothers
@MotoJournoKrisКүн бұрын
650s are generally considered the top end of the beginner segment in places like Australia and America, restricted versions like A2/LAMS are pretty undeniably beginner-centric. There's some decent reasons to pick a 650, and some poor reasons, like ego, with lots of nuance in between.

Hi there, Three years on since you made this, What are your thoughts now. Interested as I have sold my bike and thinking a scooter, I'm getting on in years but still want to ride.
@MotoJournoKrisКүн бұрын
I just had these two scooters for a test, so didn't have either long term to give more in depth thoughts on either, but we think we'll replace the 250 cc Aprilia scooter we had a number of years ago with probably a 300 cc option (or similar) in the next year, mainly because we need something two-up highway capable as one of our personal requirements. Even when we lived in the city we often needed to use motorways so I tend to lean towards the larger capacity options which excel there, but I think that's largely a riding and lifestyle consideration.

Hi Kris, I’m interested in your thoughts about the screen and how you find the level of protection it provides. Would you suggest adding a deflector on the top for riders around the 6’2” height? Impressive sound from the stock exhaust. Thoughts on the OEM tyres? For your intended riding what would you put on them when these wear out? Cheers, Marcus.
@martythompson65092 күн бұрын
I'm 5'11" and the screen is just a tad short. I'm sure one of those clip on deflectors would work. But I went with some $15.00 adjustable brackets from AliExpress. It turns the standard screen into an adjustable screen.
@rideinnl2 күн бұрын
I am 176, and the stock screen is way too noisy at highway speeds. Just ordered a taller screen and side deflectors, as you get a lot of wind hitting your upper torso, not only helmet.

@@martythompson6509 Nice. Thanks for the tip.
@marcusgeorge18252 күн бұрын
@@rideinnl So, at 189 cms it would be useless! Even with a deflector. Appreciate your input. What did you end up ordering? I perhaps need to look at the Africa twin instead as even after 40 plus years of riding, they have predominantly been sports bikes and if I do go off-road it’s with a proper dirt bike.

@@marcusgeorge1825 Tyres... Tyres are fairly individual. Where and how you ride... As well as the feeling you prefer will normally determine tyre choice. Fwiw, I got 6000klms out of the OEM tyres. They were fine on tar and hardpack dirt. But they're a road tyre. I replaced them with Michelin Anakee Wilds. But I mostly do dirt. If I were riding more tar, I'd go with the Anakee adventure. The rear shock on these bikes is junk. Be prepared to drop at least a $1k to upgrade to something with better adjustability. The stock exhaust can is also ridiculously big and bulky. It can actually affect the balance and tracking of the bike. Bike benefits from an aftermarket slip on. Agree the rear brake is also useless however there are aftermarket options out there to allow an upgrade to a 2 pot Brembo unit.
@MotoJournoKris4 күн бұрын
Honestly, for the day I spent on the bike, the shock performed the best of any bike I've taken along that test route, but I may have just been lucky that it suited me really well. The stock exhaust is enormous though, definitely a priority to replace!

To be completely honest I prefer the original model, features aren't everything, if your going to ride on motorways (120kph)get an 801, here in Finland road speeds are low anyway and motorway riding is boring, but above all I just prefer the look of the original, like marmite (vegemite) you either love it or hate it.

Only negative thing i have is the throttle response at low speed, at town when get off the throttle and on again its a bit rough and hard.

I am in the U.S. and own an 04' FJR for a little over 9 years now. I bought mine from the original owner, with a modest 14,000 miles on it. I now have 43,000 miles on the ODO with multiple multi-state tours. I have owned many bikes over the years and I can honestly say this is the best sport-touring motorcycle on the planet. It is fuel injected, comfortable, ultra reliable, fast, gets great fuel mileage and has tons of storage for long trips. Of course I have added bar risers, an after market seat , tip-over bars and a taller/higher V-Stream wind screen. I average between 38 and 42 MPG and love that this bike will run flawlessly on 87 octane fuel, if that is all you can find. The fairing design, along with the after market windscreen keeps me bone-dry when caught in unexpected T-Storms. I only get wet if I stop. This bike has never let me down mechanically and will go the distance if you maintain it properly! Thanks for sharing the video!

After 8k kilometers I can say: the Transalp is a bike for nearly every opportunity as long as you do not expect her to deliver high end results! I drove her off-road in Poland (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lZedrJiS0LywYY0.htmlsi=swh3HDUhlQFkSpC4) and in Germany (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ebmYi5lm37ippps.htmlsi=78wXgT2eql_mRyk5) and she did her job awesome. I changed the exhaust to a high one and now I am planing a change of suspension to the touratech extreme suspension to kick the Transalp to a new level. So far: just try her, you'll find a nice smooth bike with outstanding qualities for most kind of adventures. Before I forget; I will also mount a cruise control in some weeks when it will be delivered from Canada. Cheers from Germany.
