Bought a 2024 CPO GLI Manual. Currently over the moon with it. Wonderful design, more power, a manual transmission. I have not had issues with the capacitive buttons, but I have best of both worlds with manual climate controls. I upgraded from a 2015 with same options. It's wonderful.

I’ve had a bunch of VW’s including a previous versions of the GLI, but it has been a while. Last fall I sold my F80 M3 to go back to having two cars. A daily and a fun far. I went to a VW dealer to drive a used M340i and was so disappointed. While there I kept walking buy a new 40th GLI which I asked to drive. It immediately brought me way more joy than the lifeless BMW. But I was still dead set against another GLI. Over the past 6 months, I was pretty much set on a G80 M3 or a CT5 Blackwing, both in manual. Earlier this week, I almost bought a 22 BW and the two days later I instead bought a 21 GLI Autobahn 6 speed CPO. $23k w/39k miles and 4 years of warranty. I’ll be saving 500 per year on insurance and 200 per month in gas and more importantly, I won’t have to stop every 190 miles to fill it up. And now I have a massive budget for a fun car should I choose to spend it. I love the Civic Si, but it’s not as nice and certainly slower in a straight line. Nicely done review!

Pro tip from someone who owns one with the DSG: engage ESC Sport Mode and use the paddles if you want to unlock the DSG's full potential (push the traction control button in and hold it for a few seconds). The transmission downshifts far more crisply, plus you get a launch control system in this mode. I basically leave mine in ESC sport mode all the time.

pro tip, get the 6-speed and turn off the traction control entirely. You will get the most out of the car that way.

Just picked up a 2024 GLI 40th Anniversary edition. Car is amazing! Hallelujah for physical buttons 😂 *Tyler also hit every point with this car perfectly. If $40k for a GTI seems insane, which it is, this car offers incredible value per dollar*

Own a 2023 GLI and it’s great for a sportier econo sedan. It’s got practicality, power, fuel economy and looks pretty good in and out. I recently did a Bay Area to LA trip and averaged 37.3mpg and that was with me going over 3 digits a few times 😂 I don’t mind the touch buttons on the steering wheel and like the swiping features it provides. I come from a mk6 GTI and FK8 Type R so this doesn’t handle as well but at this point I don’t need it to.

I had a 2019 GLI Autobahn. Drove it for 3½ years and put 32K miles on it. Trade it in for a 2016 Corvette. My GLI was a joy to own as a daily driver. It was great on the highway or just zipping around town. Comfortable to ride and drive, with lots of space for cargo and passengers. I changed the oil and rotated the tires as needed. Never had any maintenance or reliability problems. I hope that car is as good to its new owners as it was to me.

I bought a new ‘23 GTI 40 AE 6 months ago and absolutely love it, minus the Haptic Touch steering wheel and touchscreen almost everything infotainment (40 AE has the S infotainment so volume & tuning knob). But the value proposition of the Jetta 40th Anniversary edition was very tempting. I got my GTI for msrp though so I’m very happy with that.

I absolutely love love my 40th anniversary GTI I'm always getting complimented and it's extremely sporty the only thing I wish I had a little more backseat room other than that it's wonderful

I have the 2021 gli autobahn and I'm so happy I got it that year. If I was shopping for a car when they had those hudeous red things on the front I may have legit missed out on a great car. Plus no touch controls on the wheel. It has it's misses but overall a very fun car.

I bought the 40th Anniversary edition, fully loaded, it's a really nice car and the drive is impeccable on the highway. I have room in the trunk to lug around servers (for work). In fact that's why I got this over the GTI, I needed a large trunk and this delivered in that respect. Oh, and it does leave a WRX STi in the dust on a roll (just not when launching from a full stop). It's a really good car.

I have the 2019 35th Anniversary Edition. I don't see a need to upgrade to be honest. There are a few things the new model does better but otherwise the cars are pretty much the same. At its core it is the same car although the wireless carplay would be nice. Amazingly they keep their value since there aren't that many sold. And the car has been rock solid as a daily driver since I purchased it. Quick enough to get me out of trouble but generally not quick enough to get me into it. One of my better purchases.

As the owner of a Jetta, it comes with a USB-C port in the front centre console, which has openings to the side by the driver and passenger seats, meaning someone sitting in the back can indeed charge their phones from that port. It's not as accessible, but it's there.

The GLI has the older gen 3 EA888 motor in it with less power. The MK8 GTI uses the new gen 4 EA888 with more power and a different turbo. The GLI has always lived in the shadow of the GTI.

Jetta SEL owner here. I would probably trade up to GLI with manual transmission. I thought MT's went away forever with all '23 models! and they were hard to come by even on base models.

I have a 23 GLI autobahn. I think the 24 not coming with DCC is a mistake. However, I am now tuned on ECU and TCU so none of the slowness applies anymore. Very fun enthusiast car

The gen 3 engine is currently easy to mod, compared to the gen 4. Both are great engines.

its basically the exact same engine package. Most bolt on upgrades are compatible. Not sure where you got your info from on that.

2013 dsg owner. rattle at low mph like when driving thru a parking lot. constant jerking and gears engage very late that will cause the car to jerk and choke, water pump issues at barely 64k miles.

In case this helps anyone’s hunt, I negotiated an OTD price for a gray ‘24 GLI Autobahn manual with black kit upgrade (and standard review mirror) to $35,800. This includes the GLI mats and monster mats (I wanted both). Bought in PA.

Yep. Feel like I found a diamond in the rough dealership. They gave me an OTD quote without stepping a foot on their property and even negotiated down off MSRP after already quoting $1k under MSRP at the start of the conversation. I opened my intro email stating other local VW shops were giving me the run around and I was well-informed about the car and said I’d be willing to do business if they were transparent with info.

A worthwhile investment/upgrade would be an APR+ tune (preserves warranty) and a much-needed APR TCU tune for the transmission to improve shift response, especially downshifting.

APR+ made a big difference on my MK7.5 GTI and my 19' Arteon. If I were to buy this car, the APR tune would be done in the first 1000 miles.

APR stands for Audi Performance Racing.as Audi and VW share much DNA. The APR+ tune is about $1200 for the ECU tune. I'm not sure what the cost of the TCU tune is but I believe it is similar to the cost of the ECU tune. APR + is unique in that it is basically an APR Stage 1 tune with a warranty that replaces the factory one.

Just got mine and he’s completely on point but GLI stands for “grand luxury injected” so that’s why they just tweaked it to be that way so it’s noticeably different from the other models using the same parts in different combos and tunes

Nice review Tyler! Interesting that they seem to have removed the standard adaptive dampers from the Autobahn for 2024. As I mentioned in a previous comment on another video my son bought a 2023 DSG for 31,000 USD and it had adaptive dampers. The only option available was summer tires. My daughter has my son’s old 2017 GLI and it has 120,000 miles on it with only one issue. The clock switch in the steering wheel failed at about 80,000 miles. Luckily it had an 85,000 mile warranty.

Reassuring to hear general reliability. Just bought a ‘24 40th Anniversary. While I lose some features compared to the Autobahn, surprisingly I have the adaptive dampers :) I do think VW has fallen off a bit in terms of QC. Already scheduling an appointment for a very annoying rattle that seems constant in the glovebox region. I also wasn’t super pleased with the paint quality on mine in some areas. I’m also extremely nitpicky with it being my first new car.

I can assure you that from 2010 (when I bought my Hird vw) no issues new, 2018 (no issues new) had a few of them all new....now I only go to the mall...........mileage a year is about 4000 miles!@@seanpittacora9668

the Golf 8 GTI has the new 2 L Turbo engine and DSG Transm.. the Jetta has the older engine and Transm. from the Golf 7 and thats why the Golf cost a little bit more.

The problem I have with most of the GLI reviews is how much this car is misunderstood. And the blame falls on Volkswagen for making it out to be a pure sports sedan which it is not, it is a sporty sedan, more than enough power to be fun day to day, won't beat you up, gets great gas mileage, so if VW would highlight the 'L' which does stand for luxury, not sports (yes I know it is still a jetta), then maybe people would not expect it to be a GTI with a trunk.

Feels like a berline, the GLI is the jake of all trades. I drive mine on sport mode all the time but I can see a huge difference on comfrot mode when I drive my wife around, not even the same car.

I have owned many VW's...the last being a 2012 VW CC.....unhappily the DSG Transmission is TRASH after 90K miles.....steer clear!!!! My fav. was a 2006 Diesel Jetta...but alas....DSG transmission was one of many that died at 90k! PS you are so cute!

I thought the Autobahn trim comes with the adaptive dampers as well? Or did they make that exclusive for the 40th edition for 2024?

Believe it may be exclusive to the 40th for 2024. Just purchased one and had heard they took out some features on the GLI. One of the first questions I asked and the salesman showed me all the various mode configurations…it is there.

The more I learn about these new Jettas the more VW has me like 👀 I only wonder about cost of ownership, ease of maintenance, and average repair costs. Still seems like car that you really ought to buy new/very slightly used and still under warranty.

Recently purchased the 2024 GLI waiting for its arrival (next month) just a question tho, if I hit the paddle shifters by accident what do I do to turn it off? I have no idea how to use them so I want to know just in case I’m on the highway and I hit them by accident

As long as you keep it in drive it’ll just revert back automatically after a period of time. Sometimes I hit it the paddles to downshift before I pass someone while in regulars drive mode and a few seconds after all the commotion is done it goes back to its normal programming.

I have the 2022 GLI. I learned if you hit the paddle shifter by accident you can also take the gear shifter, shift it to the left as if you're going to drive it manually, and shift it back to right

@@brittmyob6966just push the shifter down where “sport” is and it will revert back to whatever mode you were in before the paddle input. Just pull back no need to move to the right

As someone who used to love Volkswagens, I stay far away from them now… let me tell you once that warranty expires then you’re screwed… a lot of local mechanic shops, tire shops, auto repair shops, will not touch Volkswagens. They say those cars are a mess to work with. Not because they are bad cars. But because Volkswagen makes it impossible for anyone to do any maintenance or repair work on them. Their cars require special tools and parts that many mechanics don’t have. I mean it’s not just a Volkswagen, but mostly European cars. I get it, European cars use different parts. But it’s particularly Volkswagen that makes it even harder than any other European car to work on in the US if it’s outside a VW dealer. It sucks because it’s literally impossible to keep this car long term unless you’re financially stable and don’t mind spending thousands of dollars a year on maintenance once that warranty expires. Volkswagen makes it to where you have to rely solely on them. And that’s where they lost my respect.. just be careful when you purchase a Volkswagen. Know what you’re getting yourself into.

I'm not sure if the value is there, it does have older engine. Older infotainment that will probably not get software updates to match your phones apps, you buy jetta for rear passengers and there no vents, that 4-5,000 difference, I'm not sure. would anybody buy a 7.5 GTI For $33,000 these days?

Contrary to the bandwagon replies, you can't deny that the GLI looks better than the new 3 series. I'd get the GLI just for the manual option; you can't get a manual on the 3 series.

BTW, when I was looking I gave up and couldn't find a manual anywhere in Texas. So take the MSRP with a grain of salt, because most will be marked up a grand from that. There is one in Texas, but its a Autobahn for $33,621

Talking about changes over the years. For example, in 2021 Nissan released the all-new Rogue, in 2022 they updated it with a brand new engine and transmission. In 2023.5 they made small changes including adding start/stop. In 2024 they are doing a refresh, new bumpers, grill, wheels, infotainment, and shifter mechanism. I'm not seeing many year to year updates to the GLI since 2019. @@Quadruple-Vaxxed-Boomer

@@D_Roadtrip_Productions The problem is that the touch sensitive buttons on the steering wheel can accidentally get pressed through the normal course of, oh, steering the car. Multiple other reviews have mentioned this.

​​@@robertk1049Had for 18 months and while I absolutely wish there were traditional buttons instead, I couldn't tell you the last time I hit something accidentally while steering. The real issue is that you occasionally half to glance down at the steering wheel to find some buttons, unlike physical buttons where I becomes second nature almost immediately. But honestly not a deal breaker for me and no regrets.

​@@MisterDumptruckIt was for me tbh. I ended up getting a manual A-spec Integra and love my physical controls on the steering wheel. Sometimes, simpler is better but more power to you for adapting to it

A WRX starts out at like $32k these days and comes with less features than the VW. I'd personally go subie over vw but with the inflating price of the WRX, I'd say the GLI is a better value!

Yes, I've heard about BMW. My experience with my 2012 GTI that I purchased new had me forking out way more money than I expected. I think my 60K service ended up being $1000.@@japanwatchconnection

m...Excuse me but... The GLI actually beat the WRX on the roll amongst other things. The WRX don't even have leather, any comfort whatsoever there and without the generous accessories of the GLI. The Elantra S owners are reporting serious problems under 10,000 km...It's Hyundai after all, so no suprise there! Yeah, the GLI is a GTI with a trunk once you twist a thing or two without even avoiding warranty and all this without the absurd price of the GTI. I mean do you have a beef with the GLI? Because I am enjoying my GLI Autobahn 2023 even more now lmao! To end this I would like to mention that the GLI wipped the floor with the SI all over the place without really trying I mean, it's a sport Sedan trying to be acceptable everywhere but still outperform most of its competitors. The fact that you laugh a the red lipstick shows how little bad things can be said about this car. I covered the lipticks with carbon fiber, this is actually looking sharp.

The problem with CVTs are usually caused either by poor maintenance or lack of maintenance (the "lifetime fluid" syndrome). If you maintain your CVT, it should take care of you. The drone they make is going to be annoying to most, but it will work fine...well, except early Nissan and Audi CVTs.

It's still the same motor, same power, same body-style, same front wheel drive car since 2019. VW needs a whole new GLI with more power, all-wheel drive and new body-style..

Just get the GTI. Its a superior car with a real legacy. These new jettas don't have the same energy and vibe as the older more compact jettas of the past. Its slower, heavier and with worse handling than the GTI.

140K on my big turbo GTI. Zero issues. I’ve owned three VAG cars and all have gone close to 200K miles without major issue. I modify all my cars and VW/ Audi’s are reliable IF properly maintained.

@@vr6glsI’ve had a couple of em as well as my family is a big fan of Audi. Maintenance is absolutely top priority with these cars but how persistent the work is needed is driving me further away from the brand. Then again i do average about 20k miles a year with my Q5 sitting at 215k on the odo so it would be best to trade in the old horse
