James and Thomas compare the NEW 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI with the Honda Accord 2.0T Sport. Both cars are front-wheel-drive sedans that comfortably seat 4 people and have some OOMF to the engine. And these cars both have three pedals. The boys explore how fun the cars are, and if their price comes with any catches. Watch to find out!

@@MaadScience lexus, fine, Audi? lol. Ask around how long before you have to spend $2K on regular maintenance of modern German vehicles. If you get 1998 Audi Quattro, it's a great engine, and everything is serviceable, get a newer one from 2008 and onward...good luck. Still, Audi IS better than BMW and Merc, maintenance wise. Only get new cars if you plan on selling them after 3-4 years, before they start to cost abysmal amounts for maintaining.

Our(Edmund's)2018 Honda Accord EX-L stickered for $30,865, including destination. Over the course of a year, we added 13,302 miles to our odometer. In this condition, the Edmunds TMV Calculator valued the Accord at $23,815 based on a private-party sale. That works out to 22.8% depreciation, which is slightly worse than the fleet average of 22% average. The depreciation level is even worse when you consider that the majority of our cars pass the 20,000-mile mark. Edmund's longterm Accord

@Steven Soco actually "piped in" is the incorrect term here. I don't think most people would have an issue with cabin design that facilitates hearing the true engine and exhaust notes (and some way of controlling the volume of that). This is not that, though. The VAG Soudaktor is essentially a speaker that creates its own frequencies independent from the engine and exhaust directly within the cabin itself. While this sounds ridiculous on the surface, it's really not as bad as it's been made out to be, and as pointed out, can be user controlled. Hardly the end of days.

So I have had my 35th Anniversary GLI for three months now and it has been brilliant. Wonderful driver's car that is affordable enough to still be able to gas her up and yes at over 6000 miles on the odometer I am also getting about 31 mpg. However I do feel the DCC or adaptive dampeners on my version really dose improve the handling a shocking amount. Yes that fake engine and overly quiet exhaust sound is very disappointing so much so that I had a local muffler shop hack off my resonator and the two small mufflers and had them replaced with a single glasspack in the resonator location. Now she sounds about perfect, just a wee bit more than a stock GTI or Golf R in open mode. Plus considering the $1600 lower price than a GTI at all trim levels this was the much more affordable performance option for me. I do plan to start posting ownership and autocross videos very soon. Now that I have been leasing an S trim for 16 months and also have been enjoying my new GLI so much I think VW might have a lifetime customer here. Great review as always guys! Thank you...

@@AyAy008 Nonsense, I've owned German, Japanese and domestic, just make sure you do the maintenance on your German car and you'll be fine, at least that's been my experience. The only difference with a Japanese car is that their engineers know that many people won't bother with regular maintenance and they factor that into their cars so they still run after being abused for years.

I think the Accord has a really nice look to it. They always catch my eye in traffic, especially because I'm always checking to see if it's a 2.0 lol. But what helped make the move to a GLI instead of an accord is also the fact that more people have Accords, owning a car and being the only one of it's kind sitting at a red light makes it feel more special, oppose to being at a red light and having the same car as an elderly couple and a stressed out mom with 2 crying kids in the back seat.

I had this exact dilemma a couple of months ago! I ended up choosing the accord 2.0 manual in the still night pearl (it looks awesome!). I didnt know how to drive manual and it was very easy to learn in the Accord. Clutch is light and the 6 speed is smooth. I love the car for everyday driving. Just enough juice to get in trouble but comfortable for cruising. Both of them are great car bargains and having a manual makes it feel sporty and fun.

I have the same model/color combination. The still night pearl paint gets lots of compliments. I've had it for over a year(11k problem free miles) and I love it. I agree that it has enough power to get into trouble. But I was curious and found a used flashpro on ebay for $400 so I have been running a hondata tune for the last 6k without any issues. I ran stage 1 for 3k, and currently run stage 2 with tc(so fun), but i leave it in eco(stock tune) 95% of the time. Stage 2 is definitely overkill when i'm hauling my kids around city streets. Because I find it relatively easy to break the tires loose, a will get some more aggressive tires in the future.

A loud engine and exhaust is actually a sign of inefficiency, sound escaping loss of power. But if you think about it, manufacturers want to present a quality quiet cabin. All the harmonic testing, wind tunnel and sound proofing is to reduce external noise. I get it some people like to hear this but most buyers are going to shy away from vehicles that when they make a phone call they have to yell for the other person to hear them.

Hey Guys, love all your videos as they are always spot on! Thank you for doing this one as these are the very two cars I'm considering. I already have an Accord 1.5 Touring CVT. My wifey loves it. I was looking for more fun and hoped the Sport Manual 2.0 might be it. After driving the GLI I felt the same way as both sides of guys. Who needs 2 sedans anyway. Lol I'm gonna get the GTI and have my fun! 👍🏻

Really like the GLI. Test drive both the manual and DSG last weekend and honestly it would be a hard choice between the 2. I do like the wheels that come on the 35th anniversary edition as I think they give they car a more aggressive look but I just wonder if in 5 years they would look dated. Also like the pure gray color. Very Audi Nardo gray like. Hard to pass on the price as well. I can get the autobahn trim for around 29k US. To get a GTI with similar features it would run around 35-36k. At that point you might as well pony up and get the Golf R.

Even the Malibu 1.5t is quicker than the Accord 1.5t in Motor Trend handling test: "The Malibu lapped our figure-eight course in 27.4 seconds averaging 0.63 g through the process and managed 0.84 g average during lateral acceleration tests" 2018 Accord 1.5t only registered a lateral grip of 0.81g versus 0.78 and a figure-eight time of 27.7 seconds at 0.61g A Malibu 1.5T can be had for US$13,000 good luck finding Japanese competition that inexpensive.

I have a 2.0t touring 10speed, I have a hard time thinking of the car as sporty, the active dampers help on the touring over the sport when I went on the first test drive. Its a big comfy daily that just happens to have some quickness around town and back roads. I typically find VW's way more fun to drive. Here's the last thing..... Reliability for me has been much better with Honda's i've owned vs VW's, if you plan on keeping your car for a while go Honda if you want more fun go VW, and maybe you will get lucky and not have any issues. Manuals are fun but drive good manuals.

Accord touring doesn’t give you a big comfort like Camry does, and you notice the cutting the corner feeling when you go over bumps and hear road noises that are not present in Camry. Also, the seats are super uncomfortable in the long drive. Accord is just a bad bad car that doesn’t belong either of the categories. Not sporty or comfy. Make a better decision next time

I found the Topher's experience more in line with what I experience as an owner. The shifter is great, coming from a 17 Si I find the 2.0T has a lot less rev hang than the Si. The Accord is a capable handler out of the box only made better with stickier rubber and a thicker rear sway bar. It's not going to be a track car (it was never designed to be) but it is more than capable on public roads. After owning dozens of Si's and an S2000 over the decades this Accord is a killer performance value. I am still amazed at its power delivery and handling prowess. The problem with many of these reviewers is they test these cars after coming out of a GT3 or an M5. Just way too critical and out of touch at times.
