Update:
Just after 2pm today, Members from E69/L28 responded to a call for a fire on the top floor of a multiple dwelling where numerous residence were in distress and some were trapped. In these complex buildings, there are internal shafts where residents appear at a 5th-floor window out of view from the street level. NYPD aviation assisted from above to help identify the location. At that point, members on the roof from L38 began to set up a roof rope rescue to extract those residents.
The truck chauffeur Mike Kotzo lowered L28 Probationary Firefighter Jason Lopez off the roof position to rescue one of the victims and then lowered himself to rescue another victim. There was also a second rope deployed by Rescue 3 and Squad 41 to save another victim all the while E69 pushed a line in on the fire floor to carve out a path for other residents to be rescued and extinguish the fire. A total of 18 patients were treated by EMS and 12 of those were transported to local hospitals. If the 5 critical patients, one of those tragically lost their life.
Members preformed tremendous teamwork with the NYPD and EMS to save many lives at this fire. Even such a heroic and miraculous effort could not save everyone. Our hears go out to all the Families involved especially those who lost a loved one.

The FDNY responded to a call of fire at 2:14 Friday afternoon at 2 St. Nicholas Place in Manhattan. Firefighters arrived within 3.5 minutes to find people on the fire escape as well as people hanging out of the windows on the fifth floor.
Members used the lifesaving rope to complete an evolution in which a firefighter is attached to a rope, goes off the side of the building, grabs the victim and lowers them both to the ground. Three firefighters saved three different people using the maneuver.
“We have usually one of these a year or two, this was three at one fire,” said Chief of Department John Hodgens. “While that was going on, we had our engine company moving up to the third floor. We had heavy fire blowing out into the hallway from the fire apartment. The fire that was blowing out was blocking off the exit pathway of the occupants trying to escape down the stairs. As the engine company moved in to extinguish that fire, our ladder company members went to the upper floors where they found three victims unconscious.”
“EMS units on scene treated 18 patients. 12 were transported to area hospitals,” said Chief of EMS Michael Fields. “Five of those 12 were critical patients. One succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. Paramedics did a phenomenal job once fire operations brought the patients out to extend life and get them to area hospitals so they can get continued care.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
