05:49hrs. Schuylkill County Dispatched a working house fire at 30 West Mahanoy Avenue in Girardville for a reported house fire.
Upon arrival Chief Zangari took command with fire showing from the 2nd and 3rd division or an unoccupied dwelling. A defensive attack was initiated as the structure was unoccupied. “I was not going to endanger anybody’s life by sending them into vacant buildings,” said Zangari, president of the Schuylkill County Fire Chiefs Association. It is believed the blaze started in 30 East Mahanoy and spread to the other half of the duplex.
This incident was then upgraded to a 2nd alarm.
This incident is being investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshall.
As a precaution Command ordered the evacuation of a nearby apartment building with four units until the fire was brought under control.
Both homes are considered a total loss
No injuries were reported.

When I was a volunteer, we would go in with 2 lines, each was 1 1/2” at the time, 1 3/4” hadn’t come out yet, one line was in Fog position and the other in straight position which was the attack line, we would knock a fire down and start overhaul.

The only thing I will say is you do not move a ladder with someone on it. I know of a few exceptions, but I didn't see it here.

I try to watch, read comments, and maybe read a reply by content creator before saying anything. My take: Abandoned building= no interior attack which means guys standing around. 100% defensive fire with maybe the opportunity for limited exposure/experience for some newer personnel, maybe. ABANDONED HOUSE/DUPLEX: Its not uncommon in PA for buildings like this to be infested with drug addicts who have gutted the place and dangerous as all getbout for fire fighters. Perhaps this was a known "Crack House" and letting it burn a bit isn’t a bad thing. This in turn could be why no urgency. Why still calling in more units: As mostly volunteer departments, never know how many folks are gonna show up so compared to other places around the country, more equipment is called than necessary but the need for personnel is real. Its a balancing act for sure. #1 goal- Life. Protecting life be it citizens or FF. #2 Goal- Property- protection of property. This can take many avenues with billions of considerations. I think these departments did a good job, had good turnout, and put wet stuff on hot stuff.

better to call in too many resources than not enough looked like with the fire load and the fact of being abandon maybe it was not deemed structurally safe for offensive attack honestly looks more like a training burn than anything but i doubt it is

Correct ½ has been vacant for over a decade. Other ½ was under renovation with unknown issues. 100% defensive due to no life safety issue, water supply and condition of structure. Radio traffic and video are not paired so dispatch audio does not match video.

Folks been saying that about the ‘last days’ for decades and will continue to for another 30 decades. Relax, change is inevitable…like the climate but there’s no emergency kinda like these guys fighting this fire.

Way toooo many volunteers standing around and where is the water. I only see 1 hose line in operation. I was a volunteer for 42 years. In my view this is not how to fight a fire.

I really hate to be a KZfaqr fire chief. But when you have that amount of fire burning uncontested in division 3 for 20min. Someone needs to step up and dictate to current command its time for big water i.e. ladder pipes to bring it under control. 33min into this video i couldn't tell if there were personal interior. Without knowing what water supply is, sometimes scarce in small mountain towns. That single under pressurized line on A is a joke. Im assuming those ladders can't reach above the building.

I saw guys taking stuff out of that houses earlier that day. It's odd that it would catch on fire later on. Unoccupied? Maybe arson? I've see no mention of anybody being there prior.

If water had been applied through the fire room windows from the very start, the roof might have been saved. When you apply water through an opening in a structure from a distance, you have to Think about where every drop is going and what it is accomplishing. Then, you have to move your feet left and right and forward and back to adjust the Angle of Attack to cover as much burning material as possible. if you don't, the remaining burning material will evaporate the water and rekindle the fire.

These firefighters might have training for something else. Maybe for overhaul. I don't know. I'm just take a guess here. They might also have been swapped out with other fire fighters and are taking a break maybe?

@@dnrme13 No, not a firefighter, EMS. I have been involved with EMS since I was 16. I have friends that are firefighters. Being with EMS I do respond to fire's, after a while when just standing around, you tend to learn things. I have learned a lot about fire's just by watching and listening to the Chief that is making all the calls on that fire.
