@@jamesbarry2388 Biking an average of 75 miles per week on my local rail trail system I agree , but E-bikers are much more of a problem , especially the younger crowd weaving around bikes and people doing 30-40mph which I see quite often. All I see is a serious injury and pending lawsuits just waiting to happen. Most cyclists slow down and warn people that they're coming up from behind them , I usually have music playing that can be heard from 50 feet away. A huge problem is people walking or jogging while wearing headphones in the middle of the road unaware of their surroundings , which in my opinion is a bigger annoyance.

@@tobebike as a 61 year old Mountain Biker and a retired XC racer I don’t need to prove anything to you. I can tell you what I and my friends have dealt with you e-bike knuckleheads. Our team was on a training day and on a singletrack . We came up on the guy who plowed his e-bike into a guy walking his dog. The e-bikes hurt the hiker and broke his own clavicle. They had to airlift his fat ass off the trail. Another time I was climbing a single track hill. I have the right away and this e-biker comes down the trail running me off the trail. He barely had control of his ebike. My 60 year old wife is a gravel biker (none motorized) was crashed into by a e-bikes on a rail trail. I was about 20 yards behind her when this guy could not negotiate the curve because he was going too fast. He crashed into my wife’s new Specialized gravel bike. I’m 72 years old and have ridden a class 2 bike for the past 5 years incident free. I typically ride within the 12-15 mph and stay out of everyone’s way. For seniors there should be no throttle restrictions, we need to be able to have access to them for health reasons, IE need to get to a bathroom quickly without having to peddle.(peddling exacerbates the urgency) hey don’t laugh, one day you’ll be able to empathize. We older people use our e-bikes to to enjoy what little life we have left, so legislators need to make exemptions for us. Just leave us alone, we’re NOT the problem. That’s my speel on behalf of my age group, other groups need to speak for their specific needs.

If you don't go above 15 mph then EU type regulations will hardly affect you. If adopted wholly (unlikely) all it will mean is you have to start off by peddling and not with the throttle start. Do look on the bright side.... it could help you get a bit healthier cos sitting on an electric bike and not peddling does not help anyone's health (e.g. look at the guy who authored this video).

No we don’t need more regulations! They should be age restricted based on speed. I’m an adult tired of government dictating everything I can and can’t do. The idiots screw it up for responsible people as usual. Also you can get a regular pedal bike up to 25 mph without a motor and those aren’t regulated. Just another money grab more tax dollars money they can make is always their first concern.

I don’t need to be taxed for every single little thing, I wanna do including riding a bike, unlike a kid I know not to fly full speed through a stop sign in front of moving cars. Apparently not all kids do I just had it happened a 14-year-old with another kid on the back of a ebike blew through a stop sign at full speed right in front of my truck and I almost hit them. I didn’t find anywhere in this document that they were talking about adopting the European standard. They made mention of it and they said that the current US or European regulations or standards don’t address the issues. The other thing I noticed was that while the number of deaths has gone up every year, they don’t mention the number of e-bikes has gone up dramatically, or mention a death rate per 100,000 bikes or death rate per 5000 miles or something, which is totally relevant to this discussion. I do hope that someone that commented prior to the cut off on May 14 made mention of this glaring oversight.

As typical, we did this to ourselves. We take our Trek pedal assist e-bikes all around the US and cannot believe how people abuse the use of e-bikes. We're in the Tetons right now - arguably the best place to ride a bike - and we have people passing us on throttle bikes, feet propped up on the frame, going full speed to get to their destination. The last two gave no heads up when passing at full speed. With traditional bikes, hikers, people with strollers and other e-bikes on the same trail, that's irresponsible. While visiting Key West last year, we were nearly hit twice stepping out of shops by people on e-bikes going quite fast, on the sidewalks. And so on. So, the days of courtesy on trails and sidewalks are gone, and this is what we have to look forward to.

That's interesting because most places give bikes the right to use roads along with vehicles. This is of course except for most Federal highways, which restrict pedestrian and bike traffic from using them. I know in my state that bikes are legally allowed to use the roads and that there are even regulations that dictate the amount of space that cars must give when overtaking a cyclist. You should dig into your state and local regulations to see if the police were just giving you their "opinion" of what the law is rather than what is actually on the books.

Im all for speed limits, but putting them in classes makes no sense to me. Some people live in areas where there are a ton of hills. You need power in order to climb those. The only real concern are pedestrians and slower riders on bike paths. So the solution is simply to place 10 to 15 mph speed limits on anything running on shared bike paths. And no sidewalks. Everyone going faster must go on the roadway. Throttles IMO are essential for elderly riders as these heavy bikes require insane amounts of crank torque when you start from a dead stop. For younger people it's not an issue, but it's damaging to older people's knees. A throttle solves the dead stop starting issue. Three seconds of throttle from a stop, then transfer over to pedal assist, (if desired).

Ideally, we wouldn't need laws and regulations for murder. Reasonable people don't need to be told what to do, but reasonable is subjective. The root of the problem is the huge portion of our road system is made exclusively for cars to go 45 to 75 mph, and it is unsafe for anything but cars. Even riding a reglar motorcycle on those roads is scary. Trails made deliberately for bike and pedestrian traffic are typically made for recreation, and allows people to get away from cars and traffic. It is unfortunate that a few thoughtless people ruin it by pushing the limits, requiring regulation.

@magarj 2 weeks ago Maybe a good solution would be to leave type 2 and 3 as ebikes, but require a motorcycle endorsement. That would verify that the user has experience with higher speeds and heavier bikes. RESPONSE: Excellent suggestion. I would however limit the endorsement to Level 3 bikes with a 5yr. license after passing a 30 min. training test. A nominal fee required but no insurance. A license plate would be issued for trail riding which would allow enforcement to visually check if your bike/rider conforms. Anyone under 16yrs. of age restricted to a Level 1 E-bike. My 2 cents.

At one time Iowa had a 250W motor limit but that may have changed. I've seen everything on the bike trails, dirt bikes, mopeds, and even a car in a stand off with a man on a recumbent bicycle. These were all one offs but still noteworthy. E bikes have evolved since I was riding mine on the trails to and from work and then again not much traffic at 6:00AM, or on the way home Monday thru Friday. Weekends the trails are busy and speeds need to be reduced for all peddlers and E bike riders. Unfortunately, there will be a few that will ruin it for everybody. I agree enforcement will be difficult unless they roll out E bike patrol officers to write tickets. I know I would rather ride the trails than on the roads with cars and trucks.

G'day, Shit Oh Dear. I have a Tebco Discovery I bought in late 2021, with 3 spare batteries & a heap of spares...I was going to use it with a Trailer for Groceries, 15 km out of town... 250 Watts Hub Drive, with a functional twisty Throttle, it's Software limited to 25 Km/Hr by Law, here in NSW Oz. In 2022 I had a tussle with Tonsil Cancer, & rode 176 Km over 7 weeks of Chemo-Radiotherapy... But after 70 Grays and 490 mg of Cis-Platin my ideas of eBiking town for Groceries had to be rethought. So I have now done 825 Km on my 3,000watt/2.3 Kw-Hr Telaria Sting (L1-e) Road-registered Electric Motocross Bike. Weighs 68 Kg, At 25 Km/hr it goes 100 km on 80% of a Battery. At 40 Km/hr it goes 70 Km. It will cruise at 45 Km/Kr on the top 50% of the Battery's Charge. 52 Km takes 1:29 at 37 Km/Hr Average Speed - arriving with 32% of a Charge remaining..., & it then takes 2 hrs to recharge afterwards. Putting 91-octane into a 226cc 4-stroke 3,000 Watt 240-Volt Generator...; it works out at 24 Km/L, to go to town for bread & milk & mail, versus 11.5 Km/litre in the 2-Litre Subaru Forester. 1.3 Litres of 91 Octane, for 33 Km ; instead of 2.8 Litres of 98 Octane ($1.98 vs $2.23 per litre).... 24 minutes for 15 km to the Post Office, instead of 15 minutes. And..., Offgrid Solar Panels, Charge Controller, Batteries & Inverter to feed the Bike's 750 Watt Charger - are all in the Pipeline. So, Roll with the punches, So to squeak. Such is life. Have a good one. (Backtrack me to my Videos to see the Chest-Camera uploads...) Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

My Hut's Houselighting Bank is 6 X 6-volt 225 A/Hr Golf-Cart Lead/Acid "Water-Boxes", fed by an Array of 180 Watts of (tracked) Panels..; so I have 650 A/hr at "12 Volts", giving an available "10% Rated Capacity Daily Duty-Cycle", of 65 A/Hr going into a 500 Watt 240-Volt DC to AC Inverter. I have seen 80 A/Hr going in at 12 Volts over a blue-sky day, after 3 rainy ones (!) ; So with 300 W/Hrs consumed per average day to run my Hut's Lights - I could recharge either a 350 W/Hr Discovery Battery, or a Husqvarna 300 Watt Brushcutter/Chainsaw Battery, per day, on Sunlight alone. But tonight I'll run the Hut on stored Sunlight, while burning 1.3 litres in the Generator over an hour & a half to make up for 35 Km riding today on the Bike. I came home with a litre of Milk, 2 litres of Coconut Juice, 2 loaves of Bread and a 1.25 Kg Gas-bottle ; as well as a new Akubra Hat ($245... !) & Sunglasses ($45... !) to replace the ones lost on Saturday when Guess Who (?) only replaced One of the 2 Octopus-Straps which were supposed to hold the Hat on the Pannier Bags - while I wear the Full-Face Skid-Lid. Road-registered means Complying with the full set of requirements for lawfully preparing to fall off a real Motorcycle ! So the $7,000 Bike cost $7,500 Registered & insured, another $500 to deliver it 423 miles out of the Capital City where the Importers are - and another $1,000 for the full Evil Knevil Suit to wear while riding it. But, the promise is to go to town, shopping, on nothing but Sunlight. Half the total cost is the Bike, and that saves 2/3 of the Petrol burnt in a normal Car doing the same job (at more than twice the Speed)..., the rest of the $20,000 is for Solar Stuff to refill the Bike with Sunlight, instead of a Generator. One has to be keen, AND have sufficient money to throw at the Project. I came into a small inheritance, so I upgraded my Fire-Hose Collection from $11,000 to $27,000 worth of Bushfire Protection Plan insitu, and and $24,000 at the Decarbonised Grocery-Run, Chainsaw, Brushcutter & Leafblower (all three of which are for Fireground Preparation/Hazard Reduction Burning and/or Firefighting. Guess who hates Global Warming...(?). It costs huge amounts to be forever preparing for the Next MegaFireStorm Drought Season, Kinda thing. Happily, I never voted to Grow the EcoGnomie ; So most of Global Warming is Some other persons' Doing, Entirely. I didn't do ( very much of) it at all, by comparison...(!). As you mentioned. Higher ages. Proper training from a parent or a simple class. Even if it's online. I can imagine many of the injuries/issues mentioned are younger people and those with no empathy for others on the path or road. Of course getting hit by a car - well there's a high chance that's on the car.

The majority of issues with ebikes has to do with riders using them in ways that are already against the existing laws. Riding too fast, going the wrong way, and using paths where they are explicitly banned are the top 3 of problems, not how much power they have or how they are controlled. I can still descend a hill at 60mph on any bike, and a collision at that speed is obviously good for nobody.

A recent study has shown that there is little to no difference to a trail if someone is riding an acoustic bike or a Type 1 e-bike. Anyone who can maintain 25 mph on a flat road has a lot of experience on the bike. Serious cyclists know better than to ride full speed, when slower bicyclists or pedestrians are on the trail. This can't be said for all e-bike riders who can just hop on and go 20-30 mph. The real question is what can be done to make roadways safer for 'slow motorcycles?' As a teenager in the 80s, the advent of mopeds and scooters that could get 100 miles per gallon offered great options for cheap transportation, but they decided to regulate them like regular motorcycles, sealing off that whole technology. The real enemy here is the dominance of the over powered automobile, which poses a catastrophic danger to everyone, to include animals, pedestrians, and each other.

I ride my Trek Rail5 (soon to be on a Rail 9.8) on MTB trails, single track and down hill sections. Trek Rails are all PAS, upto 20 MPH, i have never been able to reach 20 MPH going up (to steep and technical) at least in Ladera Ranch,CA. Going downhill we can easily reach 25-35 mph. If they are going to outlaw eMTB for trail use, a lot of riders wont be able to ride the mtb trails anymore. I will estimate around 40-50% of the riders i encounter are on eBikes. Especially people like me at 50 and older.... Having an eMTB you are able to get more miles in, and climb steeper and longer hills - longer rides = more fun. Recently i came down a single track and a guy was pushing his BMX bike uphill, in the middle of the track, i had nowhere to go, and had a major crash. We both got hurt, and i wont be riding for the next 7-10 days. I have been riding for 3 years and never encountered somebody pushing a bike the wrong way. But to prevent similar event i have bought a bell, so my presence is known to anyone nearby. What is the point if we cant push ourselves to get the excercise and adrenaline. There is no fun in sitting in 24/7 fitness center on a stationary bike, its not the same and will never be. The problem is the more powerful Surrons - i dont see how a person without a license for at least a motorcycle should be allowed to ride them. They can easily go 40 MPH, and around Orange County i see them on the road doing wheelies in mid traffic. Some dont even wear a helmet. They also sometimes go on the MTB trails and rip up the tracks. They run red lights and do not follow basic traffic rules and some seems to have no common sense at all! If i saw any of my kids doing the crazy shit i have seen the bike would have the engine submerged in water, and they would be back on an analog bike. They know the rules. I have seen police crack down on it a few times, and it helps for a few weeks, and then it starts to build again... I have seen other with the following comment, its the few ruining it for the many ! Sadly i dont give the politicians much credit for using common sense. Enforce insurance and drivers license for anything with throttle - they are essentially a motorbike just with an electric engine. Anything with a throttle should be banned on public and mtb trails.... If you dont put in an effort you wont get any help!

Here in Germany you have two different classes in a way. One been like you described the other is more like a moped, which then the bike can legally go up to 45km = 27mph. But you have to have an insurance on it which cost maybe around 50€ so maybe $55 or so. But with this bike you are not officially allowed on bike trails. It is supposed to rode on normal streets not Highways or Interstates those have higher speed limits. Still there are times watching videos from the States where I think it would be cool. But the people don't follow the traffic laws there and here they are lots of bike riders and they mainly follow the road laws. So those laws sound similar to ours here!! I think age should be adjusted to the speed. Cause I think younger kids in generally probably don't follow the laws as most adults. Of course there are some adults who act like kids.

It's a shame that somebody out there hasn't thought about making a motorised bike that you can get a license for and do any speed you want once you've shown your competence in riding to an instructor of some kind.

15 mph is a joke,I’ve been doing 25 and passed by tour -de France on the trails, sure I could bump it up to 34 and pass em back but at 15 mph I wouldn’t waste my time, way to kill the sport

I've been holding off on a e bike. I'm convinced that most campgrounds, trails and already many parks will be banning them. Won't be long before some states will cash in on them and require a registration fee also.

I've been riding on city bike paths but for the last three years, and I've seen a ton of ebikes. Some of those ebikes got really fast, and most of the time thing's can get pretty scary. Im not against eBikes those Paths are two lines + a side line for Walkers & runners Agues' plenty show off's from both sides but most of the time ebikes won't slow down.

Where do I get that cool T-Shirt? I was also born in 1962. There is no way the speeds should be limited to less than 20mph. As always a few bad apples will ruin it for everyone else.

All they need to do is enforce current laws. 28 mph is the cap, class 3. That's pretty much all you need to do. Any real biker can ride that fast without a motor, anyways. At least for a burst. They are pretty much doing this in LA now, impounding bikes that are going faster in traffic. So, use pedals, forget scooters, keep it down to 30mph, you'll probably be fine.

This nothing compared to the coming tsunami of Lithion Ion battery fires which will cause the insurance companies to refuse coverage if there is an E bike with a Lithium ion battery parked in the house/garage. Most of these batteries are made in China and this IS already an ongoing issue.

They should also regulate the max size of a truck the average person can buy and drive without a CDL. No more needlessly large trucks. I feel like the government just wants to push everyone back to cars.

If regulated it should be based on weight to torque.a 400lb person going up a hill need a higher wattage motor than a 60lb kid.

They have current regulations and nobody follows them. current ebike speed is 20mph. So I am sure nobody will enforce them just like it is now. Changing it has no point. IF they want to enforce what is there then we might not have as many accidents.

They do need to set standards for ebikes right now the standards do not account for added weight and speed of ebikes. Testing standards need to be developed for stems, bars, seatpost, crank arms, frames, forks and brakes
