When maintained properly (especially oil changes) the 'old' HEMI 5,7 was a great and reliable engine. Power output was more than sufficient for 99% occasions, it sounded just great and in combination with the 8 gear ZF automatic it provided a very smooth and effortless performance. I wonder if the new Hurricane can ever step up to these virtues; especially longevity. It's a pity that the naturally aspirated V8s are being sacrificed to unrealistic and highly theoretical MPG ratings of the smaller turbo engines.

@weegeemike
@weegeemike 5 ай бұрын
I guess not. That was my point in a comment I wrote on another review of this new Ram. Very sad to see the V8 go...I've always been a V8 guy and grew up being taught that a truck wasn't a real truck unless it was V8 powered. The Hemi wasn't the most reliable engine ever but a lit of that was attributed to the stupid MDS that Ram was kinda forced to put on the HEMI for fuel economy, and the engine had been out so long that we knew what the issues were and how to prevent or remedy them when they came up. These turbo I4s, I6s, and to a lesser extent the Ford turbo V6 are really a new frontier for full size trucks and only time will tell if they're capable of anything close to the longevity and reliability of the V8s from 20 years ago. These have a lot more moving parts and are higher revving, small displacement, high strain units so something tells me they won't be the "old reliable" that V8 trucks were known for.

Sadly this is the future given emissions standards across the world. Also even if you get just a modern V8 they have made them so complicated to make it as efficient as possible that they are now over complicated as well. Look at any modern V8 diesel that is produced they are so complicated and they break so often in comparison to older diesels. It just the world we live in now sadly.

I went to look at a new ram a few weeks ago, last of the V8's (said in a MadMax style) I'm in Canada so a Rebel was $80K. I just shook my head.. they all had trailer plug wiring but only 1 in 10 had a hitch. Almost none had tow hooks. My "requirements" were tow hook, trailer tow package, auto 4x4, cruise, decent stereo, 3.92 gears, rear locker/limited slip(either or), crew cab. And adaptive cruise/heated/cooled seats would be nice. I told them I didn't want lane keeping, collision mitigation, telematics(the black box/ota updates/etc), that stupid feature that won't let you drive if a door is open, I don't want any nannies, some days don't want ABS and some days Traction control tries to kill me. Sales guy didn't know half the "features" I was talking about and tried telling me "you can turn them off" ... no no you can't. On my '12 Ram you can turn down traction control, but it's still on, even though it says off. My wife has a '16 Durango and I was backing it into a tight spot, still had more than a foot off the side and 8ft off the rear it starts slamming on the brakes. I hate all these nannies and features like limited self driving, they allow drivers to get complacent and have less skill because they think the tech will save them in a pinch. /rant

I went from a tuned 2018 Raptor to a 2020 Ram Limited. I loved everything about the truck except the Hemi, it felt so weak compared to the tuned Raptor. The tuned Raptor was making about the same power as this new High output inline 6 so this might make me go back to a Ram. After 22 months with the Ram I went back to a Raptor and had it tuned the first week! The 5.7 was a huge letdown. I always said, why didn’t Ford bring back the legendary straight 6 and build it for turbo technology. It’s so easy to do. A V block by design is not balanced like a true straight block. I give Dodge tons of credit for going back to the most tried and true block design. A straight 6 with Turbos. Easy technology in a basic design. I always said the secret to longevity is right in front of every truck manufacturer, yet they don’t even bother. Every trailer truck out there has a straight 6 with massive turbos. They are built to go millions of miles. Yet all the companies spend so much R&D into V blocks. I’ll never get it. Dodge will steal tons of owners from GM and Ford with this new engine. GM and Ford might have to follow. Mazda which is known to be extremely reliable, just built their straight 6 too. They put it in their most expensive vehicle. That says it all. BMW B58. An absolute legend. Toyota even approved it and had them build a Supra for them. Toyota proudly put their badge on it.

My 2000 Sierra 5.3 is pushing 300k mi and still runs great and the engine has never had any catastrophic issues. These small displacement, turbo, high strain engines are asking for problems especially when people used to old trucks beat on them and maybe miss a maintenance interval or two. You should learn before making false statements. It’s a straight 6. Not a V. That’s a massive difference. That’s why trailer trucks use straight 6 with huge turbos, instead of an unbalanced block like a V6/V8. They last forever. This is why V8’s in trucks have such high failure. Way too much movement inside with movement side to side. A straight engine is the most balanced if done right. A 4 is not long enough to be balanced. A long six is super balanced now.

@@ryanb8736You’re a moron! V8 vs I6 is virtually no difference in reliability. And for that matter V6 makes no difference either. How WELL BUILT is what determines engine longevity. And in fact V8s run smoother than a 6 cylinder of any layout… Mack, Caterpillar, Cummins and Scania have all had EXTREMELY good V8s over the years. But more importantly… Chevy, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota and even Nissan have all got fantastic V8 engines that are extremely reliable and durable. Are you seriously trying to make a comparison between 1/2 ton pickup engines and 15-18 liter heavy truck DIESEL engines?!?!😂😂😂 Because as a 20 year diesel mechanic… I can assure you there is NO comparison to be made. The issue here is that you’re asking an engine HALF the size of the normal engine to do 3 times more work. I assure you. It might take a few years, but as soon as actual truck guys buy this thing and start towing and hauling. They WILL easily find the limits of this engine. And it WILL 100% be quick and catastrophic.

We have fuel economy numbers for the I6 vs the 5.7 & 6.4 in the Grand Wagoneer…. Yes the I6’s best the V8’s fuel economy by 2 and 3 mpg. The naturally balanced inline engines are silky smooth in their operation, and REALLY contribute to the feeling of refinement- especially compared to the gruff V8’s they replace. The reliability argument is moot. The turbos are as likely to impact engine reliability as the cam-destroying faulty lifters of the HEMI that was never addressed.

I’m assuming that because it has a twin turbo it will need premium gas to get the full potential out of it.
