Hey everyone!
This year marks the 10 year anniversary of our debut release “Emergence”... and with that comes the 20 year anniversary of Shylmagoghnar. I struggle to believe that number, but here we are.
To celebrate this occasion, I wanted to share something with you which I have been hesitant to show for the past decade: the original collection of demos from 2004-2006, upon which Emergence and the albums after it were founded. As far as I'm aware, most of these never made it onto the internet. This CD was mainly circulated between our friends in highschool (some of which are still actively supporting the project to this day - thank you kindly for that dear friends \m/ Enjoy this blast from the past!).
To make it a little more interesting, I've added some commentary and a handfull of pictures (of which there are sadly EXTREMELY FEW from those days).
The demo album can also be downloaded for free on my Bandcamp page:
shylmagoghnar.bandcamp.com/
ALSO: Stick around til the end if you want to see the only footage I could find of Skirge & I rehearsing together back in the day. If nothing else, it will make you appreciate how far digital cameras have come since 2007!
Thank you all again for sticking with Shylmagoghnar all these years. I would have never dared to imagine that this little high school project would survive that long. Cheers and onward to another 20 years!

This was a fascinating look into how some of the Emergence songs originally started!. Can't believe how different A New Dawn was, it's one of my favourite songs on the album so hearing it's origins was a lot of fun. Thank you for putting this on YT and hopefully we'll get to see more of this sort of thing in the future.

Thank you, that's exactly what I hoped it would do for the people who have known this project for a while! Yes that Emergence art was cathartic for me. It's from a traumatic experience I had as a teenager, when I first started having problems with what later on turned out to be psychosis. It felt like that image was burned into my mind like that guy from Close Encounters of the Third Kind who can't stop seeing that mountain. Luckily I was blessed to have a friend who was able to draw it almost exactly as I saw it, and that's what became the cover! It helped a lot.

I'm glad you liked the idea! Yes when listening back to this, I still mostly agree with our choices of what was used and what was left behind. Edin and Squandered were practically completely finished here already. I don't know what it was about that last one, but despite positive reactions from my friends back then I just really didn't get along with that flute melody! The version on Emergence felt much more like what I had in mind. But now that both are available, people can pick their own favorite versions!

Hearing Puppets for the first time was what made me become obsessed with metal and I don't think anything else has made me feel that way so yeah, that's a massive compliment to me. I'm really glad that you are are able to enjoy the demoes in this way. To me they certainly have a vibe which fits to what it felt like to be us at that time. It was good to have a fitting reason to share them with the world.

that was so satisfying to watch! it was like finding a treasure! I also enjoyed some of demos even more than final version. for example, squandered paradise sounds on demo more aggressive and raw, it sounded like darkthrone for me. then I enjoyed some facts about edin in ashes because it's one of my favourite shylmagoghnar songs and seeing it's being played on a rehearsal is even more exciting. btw you playing is so damn good, how old you've been back in those days? also it was interesting to notice that band had more raw black metal vibes on demo than on the final version. congratulations with 20 years anniversary and I'm waiting for another new material or maybe you'll upload other demos because I remember I saw journey through the fog demo on youtube.
@Shylmagoghnar
@Shylmagoghnar 4 ай бұрын
Thank you, I'm glad it was an interesting trip to you! Yes sometimes the first attempt at something really has all the magic, even if it's technically "imperfect"! And I agree, because of the higher production quality of the eventual release, people have sometimes mentioned that they didn't really hear the black metal in it, but I think some of these demo versions show what we meant by that. It's certainly not the grimmest iciest black, but tracks like Squandered Paradise are definitely not melodic death to my ears! Other tracks like Edin started having a bit more of everything then, etc. The band's sound really just kind of appeared naturally over time, and is continuing to take on new shapes even today. I've always enjoyed that about this project and I'm so glad that we didn't paint ourselves into a corner with the first album! I'll see what I can do with future uploads. I might bundle it up if I can find enough material. The thing is that from Emergence onwards I already had my home studio set up, so there mostly weren't any demos in the traditional sense. Most tracks went from being written to the final recording with no steps between. Maybe I still have snippets of ideas being born though, I'm not sure about that :)

I love to hear demos of songs and riffs I know so well. Your unique style is there at the beginning and has been consistent throughout. But how do you ever know when a song is "done" and to stop messing with it?
@Shylmagoghnar
@Shylmagoghnar 4 ай бұрын
That is an ipmortant question which nearly cost me 10 years to find an answer to! I'll take some time to write this one out, cause if even a single person stuck in that loop reads this, it will have been worth it: It's a cliché to say, but it's true: art is never truly finished - only abandoned by its creator. The only part of that statement I don't agree with is the use of the word "abandoned". I think a more fitting term would be "framed". Once a piece is far along enough that you're just going in circles without any true improvements, it's time to put it behind glass so you cannot mess with it anymore. In the case of music, that usually means releasing it. As for how you would know when that time has arrived: for me it helps to listen to the things I'm working on passively. When you are actively staring at your work, looking for flaws, you WILL find them. But you don't do that for other people's work, so it's really not a very helpful state to be in. So what I do instead is that I throw the song into a random playlist and let it play while I go do something else. That stops your mind from hyperfocusing and once the track comes on, you hopefully have a small amount of time to hear it the way an outsider would hear it. If you hear it like that and something sticks out to you, there likely is a problem. If it doesn't bother you, there likely is no problem. Once you reach that point, it's time to burn the bridge and call it done, or neurotic thoughts will find a way to drag you back in. Do the final render, and begin work on another song. To me that works for anything from song writing to mixing and mastering, so hopefully that pulls someone through!

It was very interesting to hear and see a bit in the past through Shylmagoghnar. Can't help but feel melanchonic, seeing those rehearsal clips, like I missed out on some of these experiences for myself. I'm very intrigued by this forested hill, was it where you shot the video? and/or is the picture at 31:10 THE hill with the dark clouds?
@Shylmagoghnar
@Shylmagoghnar 4 ай бұрын
I feel very similar despite being in the shot haha! It really does feel like a window into a different era by now. I'm glad my wife took the initiative to record us there, because the two of us certainly wouldn't have. The hill in question was indeed where that demo video for Eternal Forest was shot! My future wife just so happened to live at the foot of that hill, which is one of the many happenings of that nature which make me feel connected to it. I ended up living with her there for a couple of years, and all the songs on Emergence which aren't on this demo were written in that house. It was a very strange place, and not always in a pleasant way. The picture of the dark clouds at 31:10 wasn't of the hill, but very close to it. The clouds were very similar on that fateful day so it was the closest representation I had :)

I always thought that as well! It would make sense, because Morningrise is one of my favorites of all time, and it's not in small part because of the bass. My translator isn't working so well on what you said, but I think you are asking if "To Keep In Mind" has ever been/will ever be completed? If so: I agree that one has potential, so it's very possible that it might still end up on a future album. I just got extremely frustrated back then because the intro riff happened to sound a lot like an existing riff by Immortal which I didn't know about, so I didn't want to work on it anymore. Hearing it back now though, I think that was an overreaction. The intro riff would be fine with some minor changes and the rest of the song sounds like Shylmagoghnar to me!
