'A lot of people don't see the material, they just see themselves' - we're only in March but that's the best quote of 2024 right there. Thanks Cliff.

I anticipated having several of your books, but I only possess 5 and 4. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that John McLaughlin uses the Persichetti book. The book on limited transpositions by Messiaen is one of my favourites. Messiaen's book played a significant role in grasping Toru Takemitsu's music. I was unaware of the Boulez book, but your mention has piqued my curiosity. It looks like I'll be getting it. Your performance of a section from a Stockhausen orchestral score on your crossover nylon string guitar in one of your videos really caught my attention. I'm curious if the Anthology of 20th-century music played a role in inspiring that video. Great video! Thank you.

Hi TouchofBlues, Thanks!...Yeah, the Anthology helped in a couple of videos I did, like Bergs tone row as a diatonic approach and well spotted, yes I exploited the Stockhausen. ...Both Boulez books are quite hard going so it's a good idea to try and get a secondhand inexpensive copy from Amazon or somewhere like that or out of the library.... John McLaughlin mentions the Persichetti book in an interview from years back, here is the link www.joness.com/gr300/John_McLaughlin_Guitar_Player_September_1985_Roland_G-303_NED_Synclavier.htm .....it is near the bottom of the page. 👍👍👍

Excellent bibliographies for approaching a newer sound! Personally, as an improviser, I prefer to read through scores from all periods of music, and listen to a lot of musical genres in order to develop my style. Many scores are available online, as well as the many genres of music for listening.

Thanks Bruimprov, I agree. We are not only lucky to have access to lots of scores online but also access to the audio of great works which would otherwise be difficult to find like Einojuhani Rautavaara concertos and Leo Ornstein's etc. Yeah, the internet truly is a great resource for musicians.👍👍👍
