I love getting out and about in my swag and over the years I have picked up a few tricks and tips to make Swag Camping not only comfy and easy, but will also help protect your gear and save you 💰💰💰
Here are 21 simple little tips, tricks and mods I use to make my swag camping trips enjoyable 🙂

Wasn't sure how much I'd pick up from this as the first few tips were pretty obvious to me, but man the tip to rolling an awning and Eucalyptus oil to keep it fresh are winner in my book, saved for future reference and earned a thumbs up 👍

so much info, started slow but picked up. The scented oil is a great idea never thought about that. Your videos are really good and well made, good luck.

Great suggestions. Thanks! I use a shade cloth/mesh groundsheet instead of a tarp so any rain doesn't pool around/under the swag. I also use a small canvas bag (Blacksmith Picaninny) in the swag and put everything in it, rather than use pockets. Bag comes out at pack-up. No chance of losing keys that way. Will watch more of your vids - thanks!

Yeah, I have seen videos about those mesh groundsheets and when the time come to replace I'll check them out. They're good for sand too form what I understand. Good tip about the bag, even just to keep everything in one spot, I am constantly going to the wrong pocket! I used to have a double dome swag but now I have a king single AOS bushman deluxe swag on an oztrail stretcher. I got rid of the foam matress as I never got comfortable with them. I use a black wolf 100mm hexatherm 3d self inflating mat and it all rolls up to one third of the size now. It’s really comfortable and if I need to I put up a hiking tarp just as you have. I also got a SwagPocketz sheet set and use a wool blanket as I hate sleeping in a sleeping bag. But I keep a warm sleeping bag handy just in case. Love your set up and we have to remind ourselves that you dont need to spend thousands to just get out there for a few nights at a time. Cheers!

Cheers Gary, thanks for your thoughts, appreciate it. Someone else mentioned the idea of removing the mattress a couple of weeks ago too. Makes sense, it is what takes up a lot of the volume. I struggle with the inflatable pads, but might give it a go with one of those thin foam ones. I was pondering buying a 900mm swag to scale it down so I can get further from the car, so this helps, thanks ✌🏻

You can roll your swag up with the end poles still in place. Just fold the poles in three and leave the middle one through the material where it already is. Saves a couple of mins.

Some swags you shouldn't do that, like the wanderer extreme ones, people snap poles trying to short cut things - tension not balanced causing the snapping. It's only a few seconds to put the poles on safely and securely.

I use the glow in the dark toggles. I got the idea from you in another of your videos. A new tip today in the idea of leaving a couple of extras in the swag (e.g. some eucalyptus essential oil). That’s a good idea. Cheers.

Yeah, I gathered you're a hammock camper. I'd like to do more hike-in camps so will probably use the hammock more over summer. Finding time is the tricky bit😛 thanks for stopping by again ✌🏻

A guy with a 23zero swag - he knows his stuff! Lol. I’ve got the 1550 outbreak but yet to use it and I absolutely can’t wait to do so. Being 50 also, I like my comfort so went with a swag I can literally spend the day in if I have to (cook, sit up in it etc etc) should the weather turn sour for a while. Been caught in a week long drizzle & learnt my lesson. However, if I go by myself, I’ll swap out the 1550 mattress for a 900 wide so the pack up size is halved. Anyway, great vid & happy travels!

I might look into that, I usually have a bunch of stuff in the swag with me that doesn't need any comfort and will save a few kg. Nice one. 100 percent agree about the blow-up pillows, used a couple and they are shit, went to kmart and spent like 20 bucks on a pillow cover and case

Great tips! I’m from the U.S. & I’m considering getting myself a swag for 3-season car camping. They seem so much better than my tents! I’m pretty sure that if I get a swag, I’ll need a hat like yours, too…what kind of hat is that, if you don’t mind me asking?

Cheers Chris, thanks for dropping by and thanks for leaving a comment. You'll not be disappointed with a swag for car camping. They really are super comfortable and easy to use, but it comes with some weight. They're sure starting to get a foothold in the US and Europe which is cool. The hat I am wearing is an Akubra, Fawn Cattleman and I also have a Black Liesuretime and a Loden Riverina - brim width is basically different, so different uses. They are iconic Aussie felt hats, bit exxy, but last forever. Our version of a Stetson I guess ✌🏻 Good luck with your adventures!

I love the look of these swags as an American tho I struggle to see the niche these fits into, as for their weight I’d rather get a Kodiak flex bow or springbar tent as their just a bit more weight than these are right? But idk I still love the ruggedness of them so there’s that.. Are most swags like this waterproof too?

Hi Alexander, thanks for stopping by and taking a minute to reach out, appreciate it. First of all, the niche down here in Australia is really the 4x4 camper. The swag has a history as a bedroll, bit like cowboy camping I guess, and they morphed into what you see in me video. They're getting a bit more popular over your way though, I a seeing a lot of comments from the US asking about them and see a bun ch of videos about them. They are rugged and last for ever. The canvas is very sturdy and totally waterproof. Some swag need to be seasoned first - soaked in water to expand the thread around the stitching and seams, but the one I have comes ready to go. I have never had water get in, but I am also pretty careful and use a trap if I expect rain, but get caught sometimes. They're good in the cold if you zip them up, your body will keep it pretty warm, the benefit of the smallish size, but the down side is you can't stand in them like the zodiac etc. pros and cons I guess with everything. I love swag camping, been how I have camped for 35 years and it is a bit off an 'aussie' sort of thing that I like too. Hope that helps, give it a go if you can borrow one and see maybe 🙂 ✌🏻

Hi from the States! I’ve just recently learned of swags, as they aren’t as popular here for whatever reason. However I love the idea of them and I’ve been considering the 23zero Dual 900 because I can put it on cot, or stretcher as you call it, or right on the ground. What are your thoughts on the 23zero itself compared to other brands? We don’t have many brand options here in the states unfortunately. Great video and tips!

Hi James, good to hear the word is getting over your side of the Pacific. Swags are a brilliant option and the most comfortable, provided you don't have to hike anywhere with it. There are lots of versions on the market here in Australia that are 99% the same. I chose 23Zero because it didn't need to be seasoned - seasoning is where you need to soak the entire swag in water for a few hours and let it dry in the sun to expand the canvas and seal the seams properly. The 900 with act or stretcher is a great option, go for it and spread the word. Thanks for stopping by, hope it help ✌🏻

I'm looking at a 23Zero 1400.... but can't decide on the dual versus the bandit. Any strong advantages of one over the other? Many thanks

yeah G'day, good timing, I was just tidying some stuff up and saw your comment. They're bother really good and I tried out both. Hard call, the Bandit has the extra rail across the middle which will help with the sag ups might get on a 1400 so there's that. The down side is the doors are a bit smaller. I have the 1100 and there is not really any sag even after a few years, but not sure about the 1400. I like the look of the bandit if that helps. Either way, you're on a winner, they build good gear and you don; have to season it! ✌🏻
