That is a perfect day. I have been doing that with my father since I was 14 years old and now I am 57 and I am still doing it. I am like my father in that If it is stormy and I can't get to the woods for several days I get annoyed. I am semi retired.. I went from riches to rags but now I work a bit at a large corporation and cut firewood and blow snow most of the time. Not a lot of money in it but I am happy.

I love cutting wood to and dont really know why either..I did look back a generation and did see that my Washingtonian Uncles and granpas used to build log cabins.. So maybe its in the genes

I have a "Home made Acc-U-Mark " I attached a 16" piece of 1/4" Pex to a neodymium magnet. Instead of placing the device near the tip of the bar, I center the magnet on the base of the bar (against the saw motor) (18" bar). So if I'm cutting anything smaller than 18" I just line up the end of my pex with the end of the wood, and go. This eliminates the extra step of marking the entire tree first.

Good luck on the firewood. Me and 2 friends do about 30 cords a year. We log them out in 10-12' lenghts on homemade log trailer with boom, put in cribs then when seasoned split and stack in 1 cord crates we fab. Haul these to house with a tow behind pallet trailer. All for the fun and our use only.

My dad heats his body shop with wood. They have a fireplace in the house too but haven't used it in years. Used to go through a lot more wood but since they come south to my house in Myrtle Beach in the winter plus we go to our other house in Gulf Shores they just aren't up there as much to be burning and the guys that work for dad only come in a time or 2 a week through the winter because we don't do hardly any customer work we have been building mostly hotrods the past few years so there always seems to be a bit of wood left each year. I probably cut and split up 3-8 face cords a year for them out there and there is always a bit left. We had a tree company come take out some trees last year when I was up there and after I cut it up I still haven't finished splitting it lol. It was only 11 trees but those maples were huge. One was so big they had to cut it up for me I didn't have enough saw at the time for the job, I do now didn't then so they at least cut it up to pieces small enough I could move it. I know a few people who heat with wood think I might sell them some of what is left over so the wood doesn't rot before we actually burn it. See triaxle loads for $450 advertised in the Erie, PA area. Been thinking I might order a couple. The people I know already buy wood they don't cut their own so they might as well buy it from me. Could pay for the 4 saws I have bought in the past couple weeks lol. Seems everybody wants $50-$75 for a face there but I see people advertising cherry only and wanting double what mixed hardwood goes for. Bout all I cut is maple, ash, cherry, ironwood every now and then hickory and oak. Always enough trees come down on their own for me to cut for our personal use.

What is it about firewood ? Those of us who love it still can't quite put our finger on it, but the love is there. It's funny, I love being in the woods but when I look at the trees I'm looking at the standing dead ones like a kid looking at an ice cream cone. The whole process from falling to splitting and stacking is like a tonic for me. Your perfect day is right on. Couldn't agree more, hurry up sunup, so I can get at it ! 😄 ✌

I also enjoy cutting and splitting wood. I recently got two big Maple trees from a neighbor that didn't want them any more. I have about four and a half cords . I have a wood burner in my garage "Man cave" as the neighbors call it. That is how I heat it in the winter. I live in Michigan. Thanks for the great videos and the know how. Save your back. You could rent a firewood processor for $200-$300 a day. You can process 20 plus cord a day with one as long as you have the logs stacked up ready to go.

Good for you Mike - during the winter of 88, our log cabin required 28 chords of firewood to stay toasty - I was my best & only customer that year.

A friend that I cut with said that his price for his firewood goes up the more times he has to touch it. He drops splits it and it goes straight into the dump trailer then straight to the customer. He splits around 250-300 cord a year by hand and is 63. Keeps him young.

When I do firewood on my property I liked decking out the logs in different locations so I could buck, split and stack all at the same location rather than bucking, and then moving the rounds to be split and stacked. The small decks were good for keeping the bar out of the dirt too.

I’m the same way, the perfect day out in the woods with the tractor ,saw cutting firewood ! It’s just a good feeling at the end of the day looking at a nice pile of firewood ! My wife thinks it’s a little weird but oh well , ha

Loved the video Mike, Last year I think I told you about my customer had 5 red oaks blown over by a storm. It was all green and I sold every bit of it, made $2340 and that’s how I purchase my grapple. Looking to sell a lot this year. Good luck and sell the green also. People and myself like to mix green and dry.

I thought this video would give me an idea on how to start a firewood business as the title says. What I saw instead was about $50,000 worth of specialized equipment. If your goal was to discourage competition from entering the market, good job :) Many good ideas though, thanks.

My boyfriend and I are in our late 20s and early 30s already buying tools. Granted, we don't have a wood splitter or a stump grinder, but we would definitely love to cut trees down for people, take the wood, deliver it to others. We are about as green as they come, but we both got tired of our jobs keeping us from seeing each other, not paying enough, and just wanting to be outside making money and be able to move!

While I am not quite so obsessive about the stacking as you are are, I share your passion for cutting and splitting wood. It's very satisfying to step back and look at that nice stack of firewood and see the fruits of your labors. And i have been using the Log Ox for about six months now and love it. Very well designed and built tool.

Cool venture, especially doing something you like anyway. From a process point of view, you have to pick up the same log several times: after you cut it, when you stack it, lifting it to be split, stacking it again after it is split, when you load it for delivery, and at the delivery site. I wonder how much that process could be shortened? Good luck.

Now if you go to a processor you will take all the enjoyment out of firewood meaning the fun of is getting it out of your woods by cutting it up an messing with it.. lol Keep the vids up love it PS I see you have the OX I think I will get one.

I put a thumb on my backhoe and use it to pick up the tree for bucking/cutting, makes life easier and safer.

That sounds like a perfect day for me to, I also enjoy splitting wood we use wood to heat our house.

Good luck with the wood business. Here in Nova Scotia, it's hard to believe, but sometimes it's a challenge to get hardwood fire wood. Pulp companies cut it all and send it offshore...

I burn 24" wood but I end up with a lot of 16"-18" rounds. Living on a busy road I think I'll make up a bunch of bundles and sell them right out front. Free money as I see it.

Good luck Mike, hope it works. If not at least we get some great videos of you working. If you go for it and as you already have he tractors, I'd look at a timber trailer for a tractor to lift your poles onto. Then you can lift your poles straight onto a processor. Depends how much you want to earn and enjoy handling it.

I suspect you enjoy it because it's in nature, confused animals staring at you wondering what you are doing, fairly simple mentally but satisfying fatigue you earned at the end of the day where you can see your accomplishments.

mike with the sounds of it i think a partnership with woodmiser (i think thats what its called) should be in your future. ive seen their ads before a couple of your videos. look like some neat compact firewood processors. i just picked up an older vermeer 22 ton splitter i plan to get running and hopefully put it through its paces lol. have a good one! thanks for the videos.

50 cord! That's enough to be going on with. Any thoughts about the suitability of your current splitter? Toro is making a nice one for rental duty, but the kinetics like the Super Split seem like they would be pretty nice for what kind of wood you tend to split from what I've seen on here. Lots of outdoors goodness coming up either way.

Have you seen the splitter GP Outdoors has been using? If you don't go full on processor you should consider one of those. I haven't seen a dual splitter before it's quite ingenious.

Ya Mike buying truckloads of wood first maybe your best option as they will truck it right to your door (or landing spot) and being able to stack it (after you buck it up and split) close and sell it first than when there is a lull in trucked wood... go into your property and get your own wood......just a thought......but have at er and hope all goes well..... :)
