I failed to mention in my story that the trailer was loaded with a cord of wood. The tire that went flat was on the back axle and the tire was disintegrating driving on the rim. If I kept going that rim would have been damaged. I had to pull over.

I agree. There was a tire shop in our area that came when our trailer blew a tire on the freeway after hours. They have my business for life too.

You go to that guy because he has awesome customer service. That is the most important thing with business. It has worth.

When I purchased my enclosed Carmate back in 2002, I immediately purchased a spare tire and rim identical to what came with the trailer. It has been stored inside the trailer ever since and still looks perfect. Peace of mind is priceless...

Good morning Joe, another great insightful video. I hope you kept the best tire that was removed from the trailer. If you buy a rim and mount the spare on your trailer and carry a jack and a 4 way wheel wrench there’s a good chance you’ll never need it. Just a cheap insurance policy. All the best to your first baby heading off to College. I’m sure it’s a stressful time for you and your wife but all of our babies eventually spread their wings and learn to fly. All the best !!

I'm young and have no money, so I have 2 old trucks that I sell firewood with. One day I was pulling forward into an intersection and my u joint in my rear driveshaft exploded. I had to take my driveshaft out and finish the delivery in 4wd, using the front drive shaft. Removing a driveshaft in a busy intersection isnt fun lol. My other truck dumps, I bought it for $800. The price of peace was replacing power steering lines, brake lines, new brakes, new gas tank, welded up reinforced frame and dump bed. now for $1300 i have a workhorse. But its true, theres always an uneasy feeling driving something you don't know for sure is in its best condition.

The Price of Peace, is whatever the cost. I have an older F-250 and 12' SureTrac dump trailer that I use for my gravel delivery business. I don't skimp on maintenance and repair. I feel the same way about peace of mind. I have learned the hard way also. I'm also very conscious about spending money. As my business grows I find naturally some of my employees feel the same way but most just don't care. They will waste resources, such as materials and time as if they just have no value. Sometimes it feels like running in water. To go 50% faster you'll have to spend 2 to 3 times amount of effort. You can see why so many people get nowhere in life and expect everything.

This may just be semantics, but I think that you need to place a "value" on peace and then procure that value at the best possible price. I have recently retired from a career in telecommunications, networking and project management. One of the things that made me most successful was never being caught off guard. Your example of putting new tires on your trailer is a perfect way to show this. While you may still run over something or have a flat that you could not have foreseen, you have taken the step to eliminate the controllable problem due to lack of proper maintenance. The net will eliminate a piece of wood flying of and possibly causing damage to another vehicle, so another sound investment in problem elimination. I have always used a military analogy by saying a proper equipped and trained group of soldiers can take on any situation. Don't worry about the enemy, worry about yourself and the enemy doesn't matter. You're not spending money, you're equipping your business to grow and thrive while minimizing future problems.

Enjoyed your video. Some great advice there. I learned how to back up a trailer while cleaning the barn out growing up with a 44 Massey tractor and manure wagon behind. A skill I use often still to this day.

I never heard that question before but for the most part I have been living my life in a similar way. I don’t buy the most expensive stuff, but I tend to sometimes over analyze, trying to find what I think is the best for my money. It’s a good feeling knowing my vehicles are in good working order. We never leave the shop without a good aired up spare tire. On a tandem trailer a couple of blocks of wood make a great Jack. Cordless impact is also a great tool to have on the tow vehicle

What your doing is putting yourself in the best position for continued success.. It. is good to see you supporting a local tire shop that goes the extra mile for its customers . My advice to you would have been to go buy a new dump trailer, used prices are so high here , you could probably upgrade to a new 2021 with a tarp and spare for under 2000.00 . End of year write offs are always a good thing for a profiting business 👍. I heard you say you inflated the tires to 60 psi. I have several 6 lug axles (5200) and I do the same thing ,e range tires ,and I install the 80 psi metal valve stems and I run 70-75 psi in them. With a max load of 9-10000 on a pair of those axles anything less than 75 and I get a pretty big bulge ,which translates into heat....ESP if you’ll be doing more high speed towing on the highway loaded ,air up more.... I’ve had a few trailer tire failures in my younger days and no more ,like,you I replace them at 5yrs old,no china bombs,good tires only and upgrade the sidewalls to the next higher load range at the minimum one step. Very cute having your beautiful daughter model and promote your shirts!

I've watched this video 2 or 3 times and was just thinking about it and I remember what a older gentleman told me and he said that you are only as good as your equipment your working with he said you buy cheaper equipment it will not be as efficient and your down time for repairs will be high he said if you are serious about your future buy the best equipment you can find and do your research before buying anything for your business.

Those are words my brother taught me and I live by. A person's actions will tell u the truth about character. Words are composed of air...no cost in them.

Thank you for the video very informative. Customer loyalty is what sustains most businesses bravo! Sometimes money is irrelevant especially on a weekend afternoon. A pair of spares for your truck and trailer is cheap insurance! What is the cost of a lost delivery, or a compromised trailer, or a wrecked truck, setting beside a road for any length of time is inherently dangerous! Just ask any state patrol officer, or wrecker operator! Great video thank you!

I just bought a set of Firestone tires for my F250 did a front alignment as Well.. Now my 30 year old truck rides like a new truck.. Now the truck us set for a good few years on this level.. Hopefully your daughter has a good time in college..

In our family run excavating/logging business, we have 5 trailers ranging from 1 ton to 50 ton capacity. We do buy some new tires, but we always turn the tread worn ones in to have them "Recapped". The savings is about 40% over the cost of new.

Anyways, I certainly hope that your whole enterprise is successful. I put G load tires on my camper when it was new because the e loads that came on it had real bad reviews. Yes I took off new tires and replaced them with new tires but I had no fear of towing at highway speed with my family with me. If you have a heavy load get the best tire you can and you just may save a life.

Not seeing a spare trailer tyre mounted on there! But I definitely get where you are coming from. Peace of mind is a valuable thing to have. My daughter drives my old car, I put high end tyres on it only a couple of weeks ago for the exact reason your friend had.

i had to do this a couple of months ago i was having problems with my saws and had to keep working on them and i asked myself do i want to work on saws or cut wood, at 65 years old it was a easy answer. it was a little bit of money but what a relief to just go out and cut wood

You should consider Load Range F 12 ply or some Load Range G 14 ply tires for your next set of replacements. You can get them at a reasonable cost.

Mytee products in Aurora has a pretty good source of tarps as well as other trucking accessories.

It looks like you have the ez lube hubs on that trailer. Under that little rubber cap in the center of the hub is a grease fitting to pump new grease in to the wheel bearings. Running a lawn service I normally pump new grease in to the bearings at least once a year just for the pice of mind to keep from running the bearings dry and getting stuck out on the road with a problem way worse then a flat tire. Like the videos just my $0.02

I love your videos and i appreciate your methods. With that being said. I started a firewood business some 15 years ago. I killed myself with a super splitter and saved every penny i could. I pulled the trigger on a timberwolf processor. It paid for itself in a little under three years. When i sold it , because of the very high resale value, that machine cost me very very little too own. That was my price of peace. In a 10 hour day i was putting up 8 cords, on a bad day 6 cords.

I drove for Swift, We always had to have a spare tire up on the rack. No wheel, just the tire. Any service station, whether they have the inventory or not, can take your old wheel and mount your spare pretty quick. They even do it on the side of the road. Its not even a tire worth stealing, just good enough for another hundred miles. That's why you keep an old one when you buy new ones. Sometimes you can single out, take the wheel off and drive real slow on one axle.

Hi Joe, I haul produce in bins for the local ag community. My price of peace on this job is new ratchet straps every other year. I had one snap at a seam last year and I almost dumped 2 bins of melons. So, off to the trailer store in Lancaster for the good straps. Makes me feel safe. I'm very much like you in that I'm not of big fan of spending money but over the years I've learned what I think is similar to your "Price of Peace". I now make sure that I'm buying value for my money and then I spend it without regret. Buying low-quality junk and things that lose value quickly still irritate me so I try to avoid them as much as possible. However now when I make a purchase for something that I know I need and is of good quality, I let myself enjoy what I've worked hard for and feel good about it.

Agree. I don't like spending money either but good tires and a secure load are so important. I think that with towing you must "do it right". So much can go wrong, and if it does the mess is so much bigger. When we bought our trailer I did spend the extra on a spare wheel. I have never needed it (so far), but yes, its peace of mind. Nothing is certain in this life but you do what you can.

Dual axle trailer pretty easy to back up. especially when you have next to no blind spots and dont have to use mirrors only😁

We pull an RV and the community indicates with reduced travel, etc. it is still best to replace the tire(s) at the 5 year of age point.

Hi Joe. I own and have towed several trailers for over 30 years. Very seldom will you (or should you) run trailer tires until the tread is worn down. A good rule of thumb is to replace them every 5 years. I replace all of mine on that schedule, and I also rotate side to side (on 2-wheel trailers) and do a 4-wheel rotation on my tandem axle every 5,000 miles. Learn to read the code on the sidewall so you know when your tires were manufactured also. When you buy 4 trailer tires, they may not all be the same age.

Some states there is a law that you need to have a spare. If you don't and have a flat on the road you can get a citation. Most likely you will if its a business operation.
