I hate people who say we're not asian just because we have spanish last names and don't look chinese. When spain colonized us, they made us all use spanish names for legal reasons. Spanish names don't always mean spanish ancestry. We are southeast asians and I won't let anyone take that away from us. So annoying. You literally look asian to me and it angers me that people often outcast us as asians but at the same time we suffer from racism that asians experience. So we're asian when it comes to being discriminated against, but then people tell us we're not asian because we look different from chinese people. That's such a narrow mindset. Asia is so diverse in race and ethnicity. We are southeast asians.

Tell em bro, sum times I think too many Fillys, don't really know the whole history of the Austronesians that resided in the Philippine Islands.
@jjdd4307

YOU'RE 100% CORRECT! A lot of Pinoys are either ignorant or ashamed of being South East Asian. It's a colonial mentality, back then, when Spain colonized the Philippines, if you were a Mestizo-Filipino (Half Native Filipino/Half Spanish) you were considered "royalty" and you were considered "above" or "better" than full blooded Native people. That sort of mentality has been carried on throughout Filipino history and has brainwashed a lot of Pinoys. That's why skin whitening products are so popular in the Philippines. It's pure self hatred. Just because you have a Spanish surname DOES NOT mean you have Spanish ancestry, those were slave names that were forced onto our people. I'm glad more people like you know the truth. I think amount of the Pinoy population with actual Spanish ancestry is like at 2% or something like that, it's very low. Filipino's are South East Asians/Austronesians.

JJ DD , thank you so much for those comments, I totally agree 110%. Likewise I wish there were more ppol like you who has a very deep and extensive knowledge of the SEA And East Asian ethnimology it's far more interesting than Europeans or so-called colonisers. I think there is a lot to be done to reeducate not just Filipinos but the whole Austronesian diaspora. They were great Seafarers and The mainland East Asian that contributed to the progression of mankind in terms of inventions.

JJ DD , also agree with you on the genetics facts. It's true that recent studies confirmed that filipinos have between 2 to 3 percent genetics of European descent. But you are absolutely right about the hispanised names. I've also read that the priests who converted and baptised the natives also change their names to Spanish names and were given important roles and more favoured. But they had no Spanish genes. It's a shame that majority of Pilipinos don't dig deeper into their history. And not all the islands were fully conquered or ruled nether nor agreed to be converted to a Christianised system. So those who did not convert, although left alone, were not favoured socially or given important roles. The Spanish knew they had to convert the chiefs or Datu's first to gain the trust of the natives. Otherwise they would have meet the same date as Magellan even with canons and muskets. So they had to trick the and befriended the chiefs. So much more to research and discuss, but thank you for ppol like you.

Kent Alpeche-Kho Musa My grandmother told me one time that she found out as a teen that she was a descendant of the man who decapitated Magellan, Lapu-Lapu. But because there are no records from that time or anything before the 1800s, I have no way to prove or disprove it. Not all indigenous names were latinized, I have some old Bohol and Cebuano names that I found in church books there from the 1800s.

2:08 You look very Southeast Asian. The reason why people doubt your Asianness is not because of your looks but because there in the US, Asian means Chinese/Japanese/Korean even though Filipinos were among the first Asians who set foot in the US but Filipinos are seen as less popular compared with these three Asian giants. Another thing is they associate Asians with names like Lee, Tan, Kim, Nguyen etc. and since most Filipinos carry a Hispanic surname so anyone who isn't familiar with Filipinos will be confused why someone with an obvious Asian appearance would carry a Hispanic surname and so they assume that Filipinos aren't Asian enough.

Native American it probably comes from tlaxcaltecas or other mesoamerican people who settled in the Filipinas during the 300 years of the viceroyalty of Nueva España in the Spanish Empire. I mentioned the tlaxcaltecas, an aztec subgroup, since they were the ones that conquered the islands together with the Spanish conquerors. Some sources mention that some chichimeca tribes, semi nomadic people north to the aztec empire, went alongside the spaniards and tlaxcaltecas, but i don't know for sure... Anyway, the realtionships between today's Filipinas and México has always been very close... till the last 100 years. There was a lot of movement between both lands.

If you had completed your ancestry DNA in 2017 it would have broken to Asian and Polynesian just like most Filipinos who had an ancestryDNA video around that time. When I saw your picture before clicking on your video I definitely could see the proto-Polynesian ancestry. If I could guestimate your Austronesian breakdown, you would be about 60% Southeast Asian and 40% Polynesian. In addition, with your appearance you could pass for being Micronesian especially Chuukese, Pohnpeian or Kosraean. I plan on majoring in anthropology soon and really enjoyed your video!

@@steveboy7302 I don't have to be a geneticist or historian however, I've been independently studying a multitude cultures since I was 13 years old. A large percentage of my knowledge came from reading Encyclopedias, articles, books etc. Also, I'm an anthropology major. Furthermore, just because I'm not Austronesian does not mean I don't have a great deal of knowledge of the various cultures. If the Western scientists never visited Austronesian lands and extensively studied the cultures many people would not have known about Austronesian cultures from other far away including Austronesians themselves. Besides different Austronesian cultures living close by each other, Western scientists made Austronesians aware of each others presence especially if they were situated far apart from one another. Example of this: There is no proof that Polynesians knew about the Amis people of Taiwan or Micronesians knew of the Mentawai people of Sumatra nor is there proof the Malagasy of Madagascar knew of the Naoero people of Nauru. I can go on and on. So don't tell me what I do or don't know. I don't know everything about Austronesian culture or any other culture for that matter but what I do know would surprise you. I will end this by stating that after originating from Taiwan, the ancestors of Austronesian Pacific Islanders did in fact colonize The Philippines before island hoping their way to the Pacific Islands. This has been supported through linguistics, cultural similarities, archeological remains, y chromosome DNA , mitochondrial DNA and more recently aDNA(ancient DNA from human remains. Prove me wrong and I'll owe you an apology.

That's what some people say. However, the overall category is "East Asian & Native American", and according to 23andme: "The peoples of East Asia and the Americas have a shared genetic history. Their common ancestors left western Asia over 50,000 years ago, migrating east across the continent. The ancestors of Native Americans began to cross into the Americas 12,000 to 15,000 years ago. Broadly East Asian & Native American DNA is a relic of this ancient population split, and reflects shared roots in central and northern Asia." @@kerdoi Nope. 23andme has 2 categories to account for the overlap of Asian & Native American DNA. "Broadly East Asian and Native American" and "Broadly Northern Asian & Native American DNA" The DNA is labeled in these categories when it's DNA shared by both Asians and Native Americans. So it only labels it as "Native American" when it's actually Native American. And she can prove it's really Native American if she finds Native American/Hispanic DNA relatives. kerdoi maybe in the old 23andme tests. But the updated 23andme have clear new categories that take care of the overlap between Asian and Native American DNA. They made these new categories at the same time they created new categories like “Austronesian/Filipino” and Chinese. They’re getting really good at narrowing down ancestry. And it’s totally normal for Filipinos to have DNA from Mexican soldiers because it lines up with history. National Geographic even says that the average Filipino is 2% Native American. genographic.nationalgeographic.com/reference-populations-next-gen/

But Polynesia is historically related to the Philippines in the same way that Native Americans are historically related to East Asians. Both Filipinos and Polynesians have the same Austronesian roots. Some Austronesian people travelled from the Philippines to Polynesian countries. Because of the Philippines long trading history with China and waves of Chinese immigration, modern day Filipinos have Chinese DNA and look different from Polynesians.

Wow interesting just to let you know Austronesians are a widespread ethno-linguistic group which includes the following people: The Indigenous Taiwanese(The progenitors of Austronesian people outside of Taiwan), Filipinos, Indonesians, Malagasy(Madagascar natives), Polynesians, Micronesians, Melanesians. What all of the above groups have in common is that they speak Austronesian languages and have genetic ties to the indigenous Taiwanese people. Filipino people tend to represent an admixture of ancestral Polynesian people who left Taiwan and colonized The Philippines (The rest of the Polynesians in The Philippines migrated southeast and eventually to the Pacific Islands.) with later indigenous Taiwanese groups who had a more Tai-Kradai appearance.
