This was a great find this week.... and for those of you checking out the Captain's PB (perfect boat) you'll notice it's the same designer & builder -- Bill Tripp Jr. with Lecomte (Netherlands). So it was with a great affinity that we took a closer look at this lovely 1964 Lecomte Northeast 38.

I really love you guys. The eloquence of language by the captain, his knowledge of seemingly everything around the older boats, your excellent symbiotic partnership, the choice of boats you present, the subtle sense of humour that's interjected almost nonchalantly, ..., great show... thank you ever so much.

We’re moving from Netherlands to Australia, the packers have just arrived, the house has a mess and I have a coffee and watching you. Just got a stern raising of the eyebrows from my husband (non-sailor) as he walked past busy, and then he heard Captain Qs voice and said - ‘oh him… what do you need, another 15mins?’

And touring about on the back of a NSU QUICKLY MOTORBIKE for longer journeys 4 of us jammed into dads new xk 140 I can still smell the leather. As I also recall the wonderful fresh bread slathered with local jam 1950s In the 1980s I returned for biz and recall beautiful late night in empty dining room in the Amstel hotel when I convinced the pianist to let my da d play his concert Steinway. Dad Beamed like a kid on Xmas morn as he tickled the ivories while the lights of the. Canal filled our view Would love to return Wonderful beautiful people (My kind of bicycling…flat)

Oh to be 10 years or so younger and in better health. I'd snap her up in a heart beat and go by the old survey when I did it. There's just so much there to work with and not a heck of a lot that'd need doing on the hard. Go through her top to bottom, engine, through wholes, wiring, fresh paint on the decks and on the bottom a few other bits and bobs and I'd splash her doing the rest of the work on the water. Thanks for showing her to us as I think she really will make someone younger and in better health one heck of a little yacht...

Captain Q, In 1985 I bought a fully equipped Northeast 38; newly overhauled Volvo diesel engine / 8 bags of sails just back from being checked by a sailmaker / inflatable dinghy / galley with three burner stove & oven / pots / pans /plates /silverware / engine spare parts / boat spare parts / extra steering system cable / radio / depth sounder / log / etc. from a Hamburg Yacht Club. Since I was buying it unseen, I made an offer of DM 50K (DM 4.30 = $1.00) with a goodly allowance for the "unknowns". My wife and I picked up our new toy in Hamburg and spent 5 weeks sailing in Denmark to find out what kinds of problems I had bought. Mostly small stuff, except our final trip from Denmark, hard on the wind in heavy rain. It was a long cold, wet slog to windward to Kiel. When we tied up at the Olympic Harbor in Kiel I was coiling lines and clearing up the cockpit when my wife yelled something from down below. I asked, "what did you say...? and her answer was, "tonight we sleep in a hotel " She told me that our forward cabin mattresses were soaking wet with seawater from the leaking forward hatch. The main thing the boat lacked was TLC. Nobody (they went on 6 man cruises all summer long) had ever recaulked the railing stanchions, or the hatches, but aside from that, we had a great 5 weeks sailing and exploring the Danish Islands.

I just came into a 1968 North East 38 mk2 basically for free. The MK2 and MK3 were spade rudder configurations. I believe the MK1 (the one in this video) was a 5000lb ballast. The mk2/3 were upped to 6000lbs. Mine is in pretty rough condition. About 3-1/2 years ago she broke from her mooring in a storm and washed on some rocks. Put a hole in her side. She was towed back to the mooring left there for some time. The hole was above the water line, so would slowly take in water. The owner at the time repaired the hole, sanded the exterior (top and bottom) and put epoxy primer on the bottom. But he never finished the job. Unfortunately she sat for these last 3-1/2 years and collected water in the bilge. Since then the aft portion of the keel has crushed due to the long sit. It's going to take me a few years to get her going again, but I'm looking forward to it! Thanks for sharing! It's awesome to see what my boat could become!

@@YachtHunters Thanks Captain. The 12 meter boats have always been, for me, the pinnacle of sail racing. The current Americas Cup boats hold no interest for me. I'm getting along in years so my sailing days are probably behind me, but several years ago, I was in St. Marten where they have former AC boats that tourists can crew on for a race around the bouys in the bay. I was the main sheet trimmer working in the cockpit and visiting with the professional skipper( Ernie from South Africa. Great guy.) When the race was over, he asked me if I'd like to drive the boat. He didn't have to ask twice. When I took hold of the helm, a thrill went through me that I will never forget. Anyway, the last boat I will probably ever sail was a 12 meter for about half an hour across a bay in St. Maarten. I'll spend the rest of my days being pretty OK with that.

I love the lines in this boat and can imagine how responsive undersail. There is quite a bit to update d for myself I’d like to almost completely rearrange the interior. Put the stove back in. Create a much better navigation station. Redo the bathroom as you suggested. I wouldn’t need to sleep so many people and I could make the interior more livable at anchor and underway. The price is right though. Wonderful boat this week Captain and Ran-day.

Back in the early '60s my father's first sailboat was a Tripp-Lentsch 30 foot. The boat looked like a small version of this boat with the dark blue hull same cabin top/portlight look, and a very wide companion way hatch. The boat was rather tender sailing in the Solent and English Channel, which was highlighted by his next boat a Camper and Nicholson 32.

Ya know,,, best. Bang for your buck I've seen on this channel. So many I've seen are way over priced, but this I bet won't last long. Key ingredient of course is the mast, and the engine (you never talked about either), that's would be concerning, but something tells me you knew this, and it was probably a sold boat. Good luck to the next owner. Less than a year, your cruising to the Bahamas and south..

Tripp Sr. has to be one of the most influential and important yacht designers in history - up there with Alberg, Rhodes, Herreshoff, and Stephens - always loved his iconic designs - Block Island and Bermuda 40, Columbia 50, Coronados, Le Comtes, etc..

You are a person of impeccable insight. Sadly he lost his life on the Connecticut Expressway when another car crossed the lane and killed him in his Jaguar. He was perfect for the time and an experimenter who didn’t follow the flock of other designers rather put a unique spin of his own on his designs. The Pbu was a great find for me and I loved her dearly but when I was looking for I was actually trying to find a Columbia 50 which I had sailed on from Bermuda back to New England after the 66 race. I still think she is one of the prettiest boats that he designed or that anybody designed for production purposes. There is actually a telling me to 50 sitting on a steel cradle in Malaysia waiting to be bought and shipped to some lucky new owner. I’ve been watching her for a couple of years. I like the basic original layout of the 50s and some people have redesigned the interiors but anyway that’s a fine point. If you do win the lottery are granny leaves you something special on her mantle keep an eye out for 50 they are rarely on the market and if you find one I don’t want it please contact me lol CQ

The Medalist 33 featured early in the video looked like a big, Columbia 26 Mk II that I used to crew on! The cabin top looked identical; one could see it was a Bill Tripp design.

she was really quite different under water and of course the Columbias were production boats with molded interiors as oppsosed to the more limited production of the Le comtes both cool boats in their own way i have been trying to interview some older columbias but owners arent selling cool

Gorgeous boat. I am surprised at the Airex foam deck coring. I did not even know they were using it that far back. This one is tugging at my heart strings. The bow chocks imbedded in the toe rail and stainless port lights make my day every time. But yes, it is a shame the fireplace was removed. That refrigeration compressor would be taken off the engine and a 12V compressor installed because,,,,,,,well because I hate wasting engine hours on that sort of thing or for even charging the batteries. THAT is why God invented portable gasoline generators IMHO. The price is totally incredible though. I can just see myself on Boston Harbor anchored for the 4th of July fireworks after a day of spanking around the harbor. I loved that compass. I would have that housing heavy plated in brass IF it did not polish up.

I've sold a couple North East 39s. A C&C design based on a C&C one ton from the 80s. Cool boats beautifully built. New Englanders seem to get together and build some awesome one design boats ala the J44. Ok Cap look up a Lindenburg 22 my personal favorite from the 70s a boat way ahead of it's time. Open transom, hard chines, plum bow, retractable rudder, dagger board. I've sailed one at 13 knots main alone. Goofy boat but I always wanted to paint it with orange metal flake stripes and purple metal flake hull like a crazy looking Bass boat. A trailable regatta boat. Back to this boat. Seems like great potential

Minor point on nomenclature. Ceiling is the inner planking on the hull. “Walls” are called “bulkheads” aboard boats. Keep up the good work.
@YachtHunters

Thanks for sharing but i would consider the ceiling as the non structural covering whether by wood or in new boats fabric on the inner sides of the boats as the ceiling no?

The problem with deck drains is that often water intrudes and cause delimitation, otherwise and properly cared for, it is a good idea.

I was just curious, on a yearly bases how many bluewater sailors pass away at sea due to accidents ? I was discussing this with my wife and was telling her that it's much more dangerous to get in a car and drive somewhere. (even though I didn't have the actual facts) thank you and Ran- day for all you do.
