I think that Lennon's unhappiness with his earlier work reflected the fact that he himself change so much over the years , and in his later years was a very different person from the one who wrote those songs. While McCartney was mostly unchanged as a person throughout the Beatle's career together.

@@alanfitzgeraldsr2201 He clearly had a lot of unresolved issues stemming from the absence of his parents, one walking out on him and the other dying very suddenly and tragically after just reconnecting with him. Those are the wounds that brought out the worst in him and heavily affected his conduct with his first wife and son. There are a lot of people these days ready to judge him harshly for his biggest mistakes, but the truth is none of those people could relate to this guy’s life. There was only one person who ever lived it and it was ended prematurely by a lunatic. I just admire his songwriting and how he did change as a person over the years while he was still here, and like you I do feel for him in regards to his personal issues and unending discontent. If only people could value that more.

That one and "your bird can sing" are lennon songs I like alot. Musically they are terrific. I think he's talking about the lyrics which may have had no meaning when he wrote them. A song doesn't have to have great lyrics to be great if the music is creative. This raises a point of contention I have had with the music critic industry such as RS record guide. Music and lyrics should be scored separately. There is alot of Dylan stuff that doesn't do it for me musically. Try and play a Dylan tune without lyrics.its run of the mill musically. What grounds did Dylan break musically

That’s not it at all. An artist is a very critical person. Because they care about their Art like it is a religion. It is personally offensive to hear things which contradict the message of that religion. I get as angry about music as Lennon did. Because I can see all the tiny details at once, and can hear what wasn’t done right. I have no personal stake in the music I adore or hate. But I still feel a religious fury when faced with what I consider Artistic Blasphemy.

Lennon didn't like the middle section of I'll Get You which, in all truthfulness, does sound kinda half baked. Still, I do like the recording. As for Yesterday, I'm sure Lennon was far more envious of Paul's composition that he was willing to admit, especially after seeing it become The Beatles' single most recognized song.
@Psyche0delic

John Lennon had absolutely no reason to be envious of anybody else as far as lyrics go. He is the absolute King of lyrics and of songs that proceed to get somewhere. I often fast forward through Paul songs because they just go on and on and on without actually saying anything. I can always count on John and George and even Ringo to get to the point and actually say something in their songs. With Paul, I almost constantly feel like it is worse than Barney's "I love you; you love me" sh*t. But at least the purple dinosaur had a point and suited it to his audience. @@BigBri550

@taraderrico604 Lennon was really good at coming up with singable slogans, which is pop music's origins from the days when radio was all there was for the masses. I do find John's Beatle songs to have more interesting lyrics overall. But more people actually know Paul's songs by heart, and I think that's what John envied.
@Psyche0delic

More people know Paul songs by heart because Paul songs are the ones always played on radio. I used to hate the Beatles. I really believed they sucked because all you ever hear on the radio are Paul songs, which do, indeed, suck for the most part. Then I was at a place where somebody put in a CD and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" started playing. I was floored! I asked "Who is this band? They are AMAZING!" And somebody said, "It's the Beatles." And I realised that I don't hate the Beatles; I just cannot stand Paul McCartney. So I started buying all the Beatles' CDs and enjoy the amazingly awesome songs that are either John, George, or Ringo songs and are never or rarely played on radio. And I still skip over Paul's songs. I also enjoy John's, George's, and Ringo's solo stuff. But you will never see me buying a Wings album. @@BigBri550

For one thing -- any artist will tell you that they can find fault with everything they've ever done. It's part of being an artist. Secondly, Lennon liked being a contrarian and , in general , showing distain for what others liked. He was also disgruntled at that time and looking to criticize lots of things. And thirdly, this is an attempt for further acknowledgement. I'm sure he expected people to respond with "Oh no John, that song is GREAT!"

Yep, I don't know why so many people don't get that, what especially bugs me are the people who take these interviews as an opportunity to utterly slander his name, calling him weak, insecure, or saying that he had no love for himself, what does show insecurity is shamelessly slandering a deceased man's name.. With that little rant out of the way, I wouldn't say it was for acknowledgement, if that's what Lennon wanted he wouldn't have left the group in the first place, I do think that he's heavily exaggerating but not for acknowledgement, he's just a very blunt person.

Jeez... Which of these are your favourites? Some of these songs I liked as a child, but I eventually grew very tired of and found them to be grating. e.g. Twist & Shout... I Should've Known Better... Eight Days A Week... And Your Bird Can Sing... When I'm Sixty Four... Ob-La-Di... Lady Madonna... Dig A Pony... Maxwell's Silver Hammer.. I was surprised how my own taste coincided with Lennon's. All of those songs irk me... There were the obvious mediocre filler tracks which John singled out. No surprises. Probably the biggest surprises were his inclusions of 'Yesterday', 'Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds", "Hello Goodbye" and "Rocky Racoon". These are all objectively good songs. I like them, but if I was to rank every Beatles song, they would be much lower on my list than on many other people's. 'Yesterday' is overrated. It's a very pretty song, just not something I ever bother listening to. 'Lucy' is a good song which evokes the psychedelic experience with its atmospheric verses. John is right though. It could've been recorded far better. Paul's bass playing is bad on this song. It ruins it. I don't like the chorus either. I wish Paul had helped John write something more melodic. I never liked 'Hello Goodbye' when I was a young Beatlemaniac. Very annoying song. Took me a long time to come around, but I eventually grew to like it. It's okay. Not great. I always HATED 'Rocky Racoon". Mainly because of McCartney's dopey American accent. But I appreciate the song more now that I'm older. It's a weird, quirky, melodic Paul tune. Like many of Paul's underrated songs, it probably doesn't get the credit it deserves, but goes a long way to making Beatles albums so enjoyable.

Bruh he obviously didn't hate them when he made them, I'd wager he didn't hate them at all even during those interviews, he just evolved and grew out of them. If you like to draw, you would like a drawing you're making as it is happening but when you improve after say 5-6 years you'd look back at the drawing from 6 years ago and hate it too (or at least not like it as much), it just shows that you evolved and improved, not that you were bad at the time or that the piece of art in itself is bad, art is deeply personal anyway, someone might find meaning in a drawing I made 10 years ago that I don't care for, so it wouldn't really matter what an individual thinks, just discover what you yourself think.

Ya, those first songs that Lennon wrote (It's Only Love, No Reply etc;) were IMO his best. He trashed them because the lyrics weren't up to the standards that he set for himself, but lyrics (to me) are only 'messengers' of the melody and are for the most part irrelevant. The song 'Stardust' would have been a classic even it was called 'Kitty Litter' because the melody is that beautiful

Except O-blah-de… John, George and Ringo hated that one. And so do I. It is just an exercise, not a finished piece of music. It is interesting that John named his own work so much. Sadly, I admit that Yesterday does nothing for me. Maybe I heard it too much? Maybe because it was a solo song, not a group song? But I think Here, There and Everywhere is Paul’s best song ever. And For No One. What a resounding, soul-filled song. Paul had the chops, and deserves a lot of praise. But neither man as individual writers/artists, could touch the magic of the Lennon/McCartney collaborations. Pure magic.

John also hated "Mr. Moonlight" and even said "I wish we'd never recorded it". I love it if only for the the opening where he screams "MR. MOONLIGHT". just for the extraordinary sound of his voice,. I Used to lift the tone arm up and play the opening over and over forever just to hear those two words of perfection, incredible. Bob Dylan has said Lennon was the best rock singer ever, I don't disagree. Great rock tone. edit; One of the problems Paul had was he was too talented and could write a mediocre song in ten minutes. So yeah filler songs pop up from time to time, they are cleverly disguised because of the great vocals, playing, and production.

Famous, rich, & super lucky people don't like to come off as if they enjoy being envied publicly: So they have a strong tendency to downplay anything that people say they like about them or their accomplishments. It's an act - completely fake humility, and you can see it in the energy with which they eat up the interviewer's attention. So much "...you know what I mean?" after statements that barely say anything at all, other than they aren't proud of it. Saying "that was garbage" over and over about everything, is a way of implying that genius is so utterly natural & effortless to him that he doesn't even need to think about it. He's really trying to say that he could write mega-hits without really trying... "so just imagine what I could do if I actually put some thought into it?" "I'm so great that I never really even had to make an effort. Too bad for you that I never really wanted to write a great song, because y'all would have been blown out of your minds". It almost reminds me of Barney Fife when he get's excited from being called a hero after some event where the bad guy literally fell into his custody by accident.

Video quotes extensively from one 1980 interview when John was having a really bad day. Sometimes artists get up one particular morning and just hate everything they have ever done. It's good and necessary. It's what keeps them interested and keeps them reaching for more and more. A man's (or woman's) reach must exceed their grasp, or for what is a Heaven for? Most of the songs mentioned here are not garbage, by any means. Then again, Maxwell is absolutely a pain in the arse - and if there is one song that could be said to have broken the spirit of the Beatles and any remaining cohesion left in the band by the end, it's that song. It's not just Rocky-Raccoon-level tedious, it's absolutely shit.

I also love many of the songs John hated so much, it's sad he went through some bitter times when he didn't need to. I think his song" Mother" tells us a lot about John Lennon. For some reason i was always drawn to that song, it's pretty sad. Paul and Ringo both seem very happy and i have never heard either of them talk negative about their music with the Beatles. Except to maybe complain about the women being allowed to be there while they worked on their recordings. I have seen Paul 2 times in concert and he included Beatles songs both times, he showed nothing but respect for the band. I still love George and John, i really wish George had been able to join Ringo on his flight to the US, he died a day or two later. His sense of humor was with him until his way too soon death.

You're you,” He says, “No, you don't understand. It should be as good as that song.”and plays it again. This is a story that shows how much he struggled with Paul's famous songs.

Funny! The more I live, the more I think Lennon would be nothing without Paul. He Thought to much (Not even being as bright as he thought) and was never able to cope with his own feelings... (By the way, despite it's wonderful melody, the Lyrics of Imagine were completely silly morals, Whilst Yesterday was just a simple song about feelings.Didn't have to mean a thing. And that is why it is so good!)

I happen to agree with alot of Lennon´s takes here, although I would´ve worded it differently, lol. Lennon was extremely honest and spoke the truth as he saw it. That of course can get uncomfortable, but society needs some of those people, the unfiltered raw types of say whatever is on their mind. Lennon was always a rebel, the aggressive contrarian kind. It´s perfect for a creative rockstar, but might be hard to be friends with at times!

Wholeheartedly agree with everything he said about Hello Goodbye, And Your Bird Can Sing is my favourite Beatles track. Aww. I'm glad he hated his own songs as much as anyone else's, hats off to him.

Lennon changed his mind so much about Beatle songs he did have some he truly hated but listen to something from 63/4 then jump to 69 its 2 different bands, John said things just to piss people off and hated looking back .

If we’re honest, he’s right about a lot of the songs on this list, however they sold and made him a rich man. But by 1980 he recorded and dumped two albums worth of the same Granny Music he always mocked and hated. The compilation “Menlove Avenue “ was 100% filler, no killer. Sawdust instead of bread.

They are all masterpieces but I suppouse for him is work, bussiness, problems, pressure like anyone who goes to the office and finds a lot of work and ends up hating it. But he was that way not even noticing the great job he did.

The fact that Lennon hated some of his songs that I truly believe are some of the best songs ever written, gives me quite a confidence boost for the quality of my own songwriting since I find I'm awfully critical of myself too.

The only song I fully agree on his hate list is Good morning, to the point that for me it made the album less great. And I also think the lyrics of Strawberry Fields Forever are undercooked, and the song for me was saved by a mind-blowing production that John had the gall to complain about it.

Lennon didn't have the first idea what he was talking about. And, one day he'd say he hated a song and another day he'd say he liked it.

Lennon was his own worst critic. Something happened to John’s musical ear the minute he met Yoko. So in his opinion, Yoko’s music is so much better than any song on this list? Please!😂

Strongly disagree with him about Eight Days a Week, Yesterday, And Your Bird Can Sing, and many others. I love When I’m Sixty Four, Lovely Rita, but I can kind of understand his criticism. I strongly agree with him however with respect to Ob-La-Di and Rocky Raccoon , lol.

They forgot Straeberry Fields Forever. In the 70s Lennon told to George Martin that he wanted to re-record it because he didn't like the sound of it. That was a hard blow to poor George Martin's ego.

I got to agree with John's British Hit list (say that out loud)..But I think "Hold me tight" was very tight and I keep it on my active playlist though I do not have a bunch of Beatles in there. Lovely Rita no matter what had gobs of great bass, even though it was about everyday people doing mundane things.
