As an old fuck who lived through the decade of the Beatles I think you put together a fair summation (the Boy Band label notwithstanding), but you never mentioned George Martin, their producer. Their studio output was hugely influenced by him. He was classically trained, arranged most of the orchestral music used by the Beatles, and often played keyboards. He was one of the major innovators in recording techniques of all time, especially impressive in that his experimentation was in the analog era, digital manipulation of sound not yet in use commercially. Without Martin the Beatles would have sounded much different and they probably would not have been as successful. Sir George Martin is worth a deep dive.

Yes, George Martin was a huge part of it all, but most Beatles classic songs still sound amazing with just an acoustic guitar or piano and vocals. The songwriting was incredible. The combination of their talents was out of this world.

He was also a very rare type of creature in the popular music industry: an honest man. He could have exploited his association with the Beatles to make himself a fortune, by getting them to record songs he'd written, or claiming a songwriter's credit for all the orchestration and arrangements he wrote. But he didn't - he just used his skill and professionalism, to make them sound the best they could, with no thought as to his own reward.

There are songs that Martin had nothing to do with which sounded great. Martin was a producer and his input was typical. Producers do the same thing for bands today. There are also many things that lucked out for The Beatles and had they not, there would be no success. Guess what..? Nothing has changed since then. You need luck along with heaps of talent. You haven't a clue what you are talking about and of course they would of sounded different if they had a different producer or engineer or even their manager. Btw their studio output was down to The Beatles workaholic attitude. Most of what you said is null. They were also heavily involved in orchestral parts and at times had cellos playing parts that should of been for violas and violins. Martin disagreed with some of these choices but usually he gave in to their demands. The Beatles expressed what sounds they wanted to hear and Tomorrow Never Knows is a prime example of this. They usually came into the studio with most of the songs already fleshed out with the odd exeptions such as Abbey Road where they wrote the songs almost in realtime. The songs were credited to who wrote them and this is a clear distinction from co-written material as we see all over the place these days.

@@DavidGiggI feel they fit the idea of what would later become the boy band even if they are also significantly more than just those “boy band-like” aspects. Boy bands wouldn’t exist without the Beatles. They created the concept, just as they created so many other varying parts of music and pop culture that would get emulated by a wide variety of different groups and artists and fans. So while I do agree they weren’t a “boy band” as they are defined today, they formed the mold from which boy bands were created, though nearly always this is done with the goal to replicate the visual appeal and easily digestible voices rather than the creativity and innovation that made the Beatles so significant.

We should care about The Beatles because they helped kill the 50's in America. Not many people today realize it, but musically, the 50's actually went untill 1964. That same "ooooooh whaaaaaa..." stuff was still going strong in 1963. The Beatles were like a pool ball hitting another pool ball and sending it into a whole new direction. People loved The Beatles for changing music. I even worked with a guy who hated The Beatles because he said they ruined music. Good or bad, The Beatles changed music forever.

Its simple; although a number of acts have changed the world of music, but made very little true sociological change. The Beatles changed THE WORLD. Before The Beatles, the world was about old people. After The Beatles, the world was about young people, and has been ever since. That can only happen once.

The Beatles inspired me and three of my friends to form a garage band. It was the most fun we had as teenagers, 12, 13, 14 or so. Only 1 of us new how to play an instrument. We learned together. I can't remember ever having cross words with one another. We simply listened to music mainly 45s. Every time a Beatles song came out we pitched in went to the music store and prayed the record did not sell out. I pretty much lived at my friend, the drummer's house, ate a lot of cheese and pickle sandwiches. We practiced, listened to music and practiced some more. It was rinse and repeat. I am now 71 years old and still love and listen to the Beatles. Well I could go on and on but prefer not to be tagged as the older generation. lol. Yesterday always comes before today so we can all learn from yesterdays! In 1964 The Beatles had five songs in the Billboard top 100 all simultaneously, in the United States and the record still stands as of March 15, 2023! Amazing! Peace and love to all of you, young and old. Had to correct my dates, sorry, sometimes yesterday still rules. ✌️

A few twisted numbers: Lennon's Jewels comment 1963 not 1962, Lennon's Jesus Quote 1966 not 1996.😄 If you've only heard the albums, you're missing a lot of important songs, as the singles were only released sporadically on the albums. And: at NO time were the Beatles a boy band. A massive misunderstanding from today's perspective by some people. Technically, boy bands aren't musicians, they're usually just singers, while the Beatles were a organically grown rough rock 'n' roll band, which spent years in gritty clubs and basements in England and Hamburg, internalizing the craft of professional musicians, before 1963 the spectacular breakthrough succeeded, which not only changed the world of popular music, but also had an immense influence on a new sense of freedom among large parts of the youth of the time, with their relative (for that time) disrespect for the adult world and authorities. The female fan enthusiasm of real boy bands is comparatively without substance. Beatlemania, on the other hand, can be interpreted almost more as a kind of protest- and also as an early form of a "girl power" movement. As for the music of the early years, the Beatles' brilliance is also evident at this stage, especially when compared to that of many of their contemporaries. A number of aspects could also be cited (Shea-Stadium 1965, Philippines 1966, worldwide broadcast of "All you need is love" 1967), but only in passing. The Abbey Road crosswalk has become a place of pilgrimage since the album's release (one of several in the Beatles universe), with several hundredthousands fans and tourists reenacting the album cover each year.

Unfair on boy bands and there is no such technical definition. It usually just means a harmony singing group of 3 or 4 teens or early 20s. There is no reason why they should not play their instruments or write their songs. And no requirement for them to be assembled by an impresario like Simon Cowell. For example, Gary Barlow writes most of the Take That material and plays piano, even if he usually doesn't when performing on stage. Bee Gees similar, and one or other of them usually did play guitar or piano as well as sing on stage. Some boy bands that started as manufactured by an impresario took over their own destinies, eg One Direction and The Monkees for whom David Crosby auditioned but didn't get the gig. Tbf, the term didn't exist in 1960s. Coming from that era myself, I'd happily accept the idea of applying the out of time term 'boy band' to The Beatles in that they were, at the start of their fame, a harmony group par excellence. As were the Everley Brothers before them. Of course, that was after Brian Epstein cleaned up their act. They had been a simple skiffle group f kids, then they became the toughest, hardest punk garage band during Indra Club days in Hamburg - such that CBGBs in 1970s New York was a very pale version of what the original five Beatles performed in. If you were living in 1963 in England, with no idea of what would develop and little idea of their Hamburg days, the term 'boy band', if it existed then, would have seem very accurate, you could say they invented the genre, as they invented many other genres

@@cuebj I'm always a bit annoyed, when people come up with the label "boy band" for the Beatles, because this term has developed into a kind of swear word. It's more important for me, how some people from later generations, who don't know much about the Beatles, interpret "boy band". They might see 1 or 2 songs, or an excerpt of a newsreel with the fans screaming and they put the label "ah yes, that was a boy band back then" on it. And one can see these bands, not wrongly, even if there are exceptions, the one or the other compose and plays instruments (without my considering the stuff of Take That, One Direction & Co. as musically particularly noteworthy, but also admitting, that my comment, that I don't see them as musicians, but "only" as singers, is perhaps overly negative), not really as artists, to be taken seriously. No boy band in the last 25 years has achieved a musical development worth mentioning (although I was curious, as to what would happen to BTS, but these idiots, one wouldn't believe it, have now joined the military for the time being...) At best, the most talented has self-employed itself. I can't confirm, that the Beatles were a "Harmony Group" in the early years, even if they sometimes combined their way of singing rock'n'roll with a softer style, but without ever really neglecting a hard rock attack. The rock element was always too pronounced for the term "Harmony Group". No show without "Long tall Sally" or "Twist and shout". Sure, later boy bands took their cues from the Beatles' group picture (a cute guy, a smart guy, a funny guy, etc.), but while that just happened with the Liverpoolers, later it was imitated. By the way, the Beatles didn't actually "invent" any genres. They took up what already existed, varied, expanded and reinterpreted it. Of course, often in a breathtaking and spectacular way.

I'm from the UK and a massive Beatles fan (in my 50's) and I have to say you pretty much nailed it. Honey Pie wasn't vaguely close to anything by Buddy Holly, and was more akin to the 1920's jazz that McCartney's dad Jim played in his Jazz band, but McCartney was indeed also inspired by Holly a lot. But yeah, you pretty much nailed it. It was a very pleasurable watch and it's nice to see a young person such as yourself look at these things and react sensibly and reasonably and with intelligence. In the US please please me was under the name introducing the Beatles and was missing the songs ask me why and please please me and it was not a success I feel you really don't understand who innovative they were even in their boy band era, as nowadays it seems very forward but back then it was really something different it's "You can't do that" You forgot LSD also that sound started in in help! A lot of Beatles songs in the boy band era were about sex, I mean, "Please, Please me" or "Day tripper" Sitars were used in the Beatles since rubber soul They used orchestra like instruments since help! The Beatles invented heavy metal with Helter Skelter You say the white album was more strict when it has revolution 9 in it McCartney was barking at Lennon, also how on earth do you consider hey bulldog a scrap Sgt pepper's lonely hearts club band had no involvement from the Beatles in any way other than them writing the music, and even then the music in the film was covered and was released in 1978 8 YEARS AFTER THEY BROKE UP Lennon said they were more popular then Jesus not in 1996 or 1969 but in 1966 you misread 3 times man They created the latest trends I don't think you do know why we should care about the beatles I will say though the video was well edited but a lot of fact were incorrect or blinded by opinions.

"Helter skelter" isn't the "invention of Heavy Metal. Basically, there is hardly any "invention" in music, but rather further developments, variants. In this case a kick ass song with a martial volume, that had never been heard before. With "Helter skelter" The Beatles definitely contributed to the genre becoming a hugely popular soon after. Incidentally, "I'm down" (1965) was similarly hard-hitting rock ('n' roll).

I've just turned 70. I guess I was around 7 in 1960, and when the Beatles emerged I played their first 2 albums inside out because my mother bought them for herself. They certainly defined and created much of what the 1960s were, and what followed after the 1960s was also influenced by the 1960s. So the Beatles were, I would say, more influential in "changing the world" than some wars have been, which is called "soft power". Anyway, well done: you did an amazing job in going back into the past (for you) and getting a very good understanding of the basic facts, and presenting them in such a short time.

Well researched in terms of the content they produced and it was interesting to hear how you felt about hei music without any other context to influence you. One thing to take note of is when they recorded their first album it was done in 1 day in mono on a 4 track machine. By the time they recorded their last album (Abbey Road, although it was released before Let it Be) it was done on a state of the art 8 track machine over several weeks and included one of the first uses of Moog Synthesizers. The differences are due largely to the innovations pioneered by the Beatles in their short 8 year run.

There were no boy bands at that time. The things they wrote about were things that young people were going through at the time; jealous boyfriend, cheating on each other, selfish sexual behavior. Power struggles with young couples. These are still themes today with young people that present themselves. Universal themes. At that time, we hadn’t sure such truthful lyrics and they made us think and discuss the lyrics like we had never done before. They opened our minds to beautiful kinds of lyrics and music. It really is not fair to just look at one or two songs and pass judgment. To understand the impact those boys had you really need to listen to what contemporary songs were being played at the same time. The differences are stunning! The Beatles loved to experiment with different sounds, different musical instruments and effects. Event the way songs were constructed changed because of their influence! Remember too that none of them could read music! They were all self taught on their instruments and played by ear. They all learned the chord names, but put some sheet music in front of them and they were lost! That makes their success even more incredible!

I was 12 when the Beatles became famous and 20 when they finished..They have been one of the biggest influences on popular music and culture ever. They inspired the generation at the time and their music will last forever. George Martin should be mentioned as he helped to mould and interpret their music being classically trained. I feel very lucky to have been that age and watch their progression in my teenage years. The best Beatles tribute band who get anywhere near them is 'The Bootleg Beatles' they are so good now they sell out at places like the Albert Hall!

Pete Best was NOT The Quarrymen's drummer, that drummer was Colin Hanton from 1956-59. As for the much abused term '5th Beatle', to be accurate, that was Stuart Sutcliffe, from 1960-61. Lastly, Sgt.Pepper movie is NOT a 'Beatles movie', they're NOT in it.

More corrections: Apple "Corps" is pronounced as "core" - it's a pun. Lennon was only really a heroin addict in 1969/1970. For a few years before that he had a kind of psychosomatic addiction to LSD and/or cannabis. It should be clarified that Let It Be was mostly recorded (overdubs excepted) in 1969 - set aside, then finished with the help or hindrance of Spector the following year as the Beatles were winding down. Lennon was shot on Dec 8th but the details filtered out across the 9th and 10th. The killer Mark Chapman had a history of delusory mental-illness. Final comment - there's plenty of innovation, or at least superior/non-standard musical practices, in their songwriting, during their so-called "boy band" era. But you have to know what to listen for, you have to know somewhat of the general trends in popular music in the early 1960s, to understand the significance of things like that jump to B-minor-5 in I Want To Hold Your Hand, or the jump from B to G in That Means A Lot and from D-minor to B-flat in Think For Yourself, or the D-flat/G-flat/E-flat sequence in McCartney's It's For You... Not forgetting all the odd-numbered phrases, usually in Lennon songs, which were/are a little uncommon.

You got some wrong information. Love me do was neither a big hit in europe nor in the US. It reached number 17 in the british Tops and wasn't heard at all in the US. The european breakthrough came with Please please me in 1963 and in the USA with I wanna hold your hand in december. You ask why you should care about the Beatles? No you should not if you're not interested at all. But everything in modern pop and rock music you know today depends of the Beatles and what they did. In one sentence: they brought American rock 'n' roll out of its endless loop, mixed it with European musical traditions, and thus built the basis for almost everything that can be heard on radio (and beyond) today. Nothing in music would be the same without the Beatles. But you don't need to care about the Beatles. Your "phases" are wrong too in my opinion ;-) My suggestion: Phase 1 - Rock'n'Roll phase in 1963 (classic Rock'n'roll, R&B and modifications) Phase 2 - Beatlemania phase in 1964 (Love songs and screaming teenage girls) Phase 3 - Experimental phase in 1965 (mainly influenced by Bob Dylan and Folk music) Phase 4 - Psychedelic phase in 1966 and 1967 (free development of creative power) Phase 5 - Rockband phase in 1968 and 1969 ('innovation' of classic rock music) I reject the term 'boy band'. It doesn't fit, because the Beatles were from the beginning a rock'n'roll band with members who played their instruments themselves and wrote their own songs. Perhaps, like me, you have to have to listen to the Beatles for 40 years to appreciate them. For me, they belong in a row with composers from classical music. I was a little annoyed by your (superficial) post. Nevertheless, thumbs up for the topic.

I would have said RnR phase from 1957 (when J and P met, and P joined the Quarrymen) until the release of their first single Love Me Do in late '62; Beatlemania phase from 1963. Admittedly, it only hit the US in 1964, but the US is not the world... They were massive in the UK and also in Europe from early '63, after Please Please Me (their second single, followed by the album of the same name) both hit the Number 1 spot there. :-)

@@PeterBuwen OK, so you're only choosing to focus on the phases of their recording career - fair enough! I only mention their earlier years because I think sometimes people forget they had a very busy and successful career prior to that as a live act playing all around Liverpool and the surrounding area, with gigs crammed in every night of the week and often lunchtimes too, plus their stints in Hamburg living in extremely cramped and insalubrious quarters while playing around 7 hours per night to rowdy audiences it was their job as house band to keep entertained, all the time. I think all this deserves acknowledgement as a key part of their band biography since it's the period in which they developed their stage act with its unusually diverse repertoire, including, almost uniquely for the time, some of their own compositions, inserted to fill out the long sets with something original. They honed their individual musical skills and formed their incredible tightness both musically and personally as a band, that would be such a big part of their appeal when they finally got national and further international recognition as recording artists. It's also when they went from looking like a gang of English Teddy Boys to a more beatnik aesthetic, getting their first 'Beatle' haircuts courtesy of their friend Astrid, based on a current fashion amongst the European intelligentsia/art crowd, and also had those first fantastically moody/ gritty, atmospheric B&W photos taken, also by Astrid, around the backstreets of Hamburg, helping create a part of what would become the 60s pop/art aesthetic, when 'pop' was still an avant garde art movement and not a byword for crass commercialism and vacuous subject matter in popular music. :-)

@@papercup2517 You are totally right. The point is that the Beatles were already great musicians and a great band before they recorded Love me do. Before 1962 (before their career) they had played way more concerts than other bands within their carreers. That for they were easily able to record the Please Please Me album within one single day.

I think you kinda missed the point. Why you should care about the Beatles is not a matter of "why should I care about the Beatles?", like "why should I read Shakespeare rather than watch the latest Marvel movie?" Before the Beatles, there was no example for garage bands being successful and taken seriously as artists, writing their own material, or having an artistic arc from "Twist and Shout", to "She Loves You yeah yeah yeah", to "Michelle" to "Nowhere Man" to Taxman to Lucy in the Sky... etc - covers, pop, folk, ballad, acid, rock... It's like "Shakespeare's OK but he's so full of clichés". The Beatles pioneered or popularized so many things artistically that are commonplace now (feedback in music, for example). Their success transcended their failures - they didn't follow up a POS like the Magical Mastery Tour movie with a decade of "best of" collections (like, say, Elvis or The Beach Boys). They kept innovating. They were leaders, who pulled the (Western) world's musical tastes and ideas forward from their appearance on Ed Sullivan through to The End on Abbey Road.

As difficult as it is to understand, the Beatles are actually under-rated. There were better singers. There were better musicians. There were better songwriters. Only difference between early Beatles and boy bands is that they were musicians and not just singers, who played all of the music. And eventually they wrote all of their own music. What boy band does that?: And then they had an obvious influence from Motown and much American soul music. Their vocals and harmonies were much more edgy than boy bands also. Bad comparison. By the way, they came from playing clubs in the prostitution district of Hamburg Germany. Also one of the first bands to publicly admit to using drugs like LSD. They literally changed the world and youth culture in every year of the 60s. No one has ever had the singular influence since. White album is their first rock album? What was Help? You're completely ignorant of the history of rock music.
