24 hour shifts are LEGAL and COMMON in residency. I’m advocating for change.

In residency, 24-hr shifts are legal, common, & accepted
But they shouldn’t be.
Research from the CDC reveals that being awake for 24 hours, is similar to having a blood alcohol content of 0.1, which is above the legal limit to drive. If it’s not safe for resident doctors working 24 hours straight to operate a vehicle, is it safe for them to operate on or treat a person?
Sleep deprivation in residency is NOT a rite of passage, it’s a recipe for disaster.
I will be addressing this, and more issues & solutions in medical training, in my TEDx Talk this Friday, March 31st at 7pm at @universityofgeorgia
Livestream information in the comments.

Absolutely agree with him. There's no good reason to have a resident Dr. work these ridiculous amount of hours other than to save money to the hospital. If a R.Dr., is involved in an accident because if this rule, he or she should sue the hospital.

As an EMT, we work 24s. Heck, I’ve worked 108 hours without going home before. Sometimes you can sleep, and usually you’re not running constantly, but there’s always a possibility…

It’s also how most EMS and Fire agencies run was well, we pull 24, 36 & 48 hr shifts. Some districts are not as busy so your not running none stop but others are slammed the whole shift.

I never thought about this before. I knew Drs at the ER have 24 hr shifts so only 1 Dr oversees a patient if possible, but that seems ridiculous when you think about what it does to their ability to think. This seems like negligence in the laws and hospitals that oversee a person. Its scary.

In 2003, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) implemented rules limiting work hours for all residents, with the key components being that residents should work no more than 80 hours per week or 24 consecutive hours on duty,

I got pulled over, after working a double as an EMT. I had been unknowingly changing speeds, and lane drifting on the highway. Thankfully the officer understood it was sleep deprivation, and asked me to make it home safe. Could have gone another way.

I have severe myalgic encephalomyelitis and I drive but only when I feel good enough. Here in the uk the police use a finger prick road test now to determine if your tired driving and if you are, they treat you as if they would someone drink driving. God knows how that would work on someone like me as what they look for I continuously have in my blood which is done by doctors every month as I almost died in 21 from hypernatreamia, a sodium level of 120.

When I was in my 20s, my doctor encouraged me to become a doctor. He definitely meant well but I already knew what was required. I fully realized that no matter how much my interest in medicine was, I'd NEVER be able to handle it. Even now, just a couple of nights with insufficient sleep and I start making stupid mistakes. I'd only end up killing some poor patient.

This is one of the only developed Nations I think in the world that still allows this to happen. I talked to a whole bunch of Junior physicians in Europe and Norway and Switzerland or rather under the EU and the Schengen area and on top of being able to work normal hours they get 30 days PTO per year and a solid salary and full benefits when they start their position usually at a non-university hospital. I think it's asinine that we should hold ourselves as so advanced and yet continue to essentially demand in human conditions. Also any physician who's been working for more than the correct amount of time should not be in contact with a patient as they could put their lives in risks

Just like being a Navy Seal/marine is not for everyone, medicine too is not for everyone. During the training for becoming a marine you have to undergo "Hell week" which is a total of 130 continous Hours of brutal physical exercice with a maximum of 7 Hours sleep during the whole process and that is perfectly legal. Considering this 24 Hours shift should be considered as a game...

To work 24hours is a nonsense. 12 hours is the max. People need to take a rest. Or the work will not optimum. It's dangerous to drive with only 3 hours sleep. I ever slept while driving a motorcycle with 3 hours sleep before. Thank God i still alive after the driving. I promise to never sleep only 3 hours again. The rule is a joke. How can it be made by profesional institution like doctors?

I disagree. 24 hour shifts are hard but are generally not 24 straight hours of work. Additionally, physicians know what they are signing up for and need to be able to perform. Reducing working hours as a resident will drastically increase residency training.

Yes most Resident training is between a solid 6 or 5 years in EU and Schengen countries they also get 30 days PTO and depending on their local states have holidays completely off. Essentially they have more time to themselves and to study for their exams then we do here. You wonder why suicide rates are so low in other countries compared to here in those fields all you have to do is look at the hours and the benefits offer

@@MFLapin I agree. Sleep deprivation etc is not healthy. However in a specialty like EM, Surgery it is NOT POSSIBLE to not have people work through the night. We need to ensure Residents are not working 24 hours a day all the time but the occasional 24 hour shift is part of the job.
