using the ferro rod: instead of pushing the saw down along the rod, keep the saw in a fixed postilion and draw the rod towards you against it. That way you won't hit the tinder pile.

I love how everything went wrong with the rain and fire. Because that's the actual situation i would find myself in.

I like how you show how it can be done with minimal gear. I would have built a frame wall from smaller diameter branches and attached a space blanket to the inside to keep more wind out. I also would have prepared a better fire starting kit (tinder) because fire is king in the outdoors especially when at the risk of hypothermia with cold wind and rain.🔥

I really liked this video. In most videos like these people have so much gear that it’s pretty obvious that they have a planned situation instead of what really can happen in life. Most people I know don’t have Steele bottles in their belt or a tarp in the pocket but a leatherman or a good knife most of my friends carry in their belt. And it’s also great to see that even with knowledge it can be a pain making fire, shelter in bad weather or when you are cold. This was a really good video that shows how important it is to be prepared and to train or play around with with all kind of gear when situations are better. Thanks 🙏 a true inspiration for me.

Another really good video bud, your skills have come along way from the early days. Your spot on with the too much is never enough approach on fire wood and kindling. Use the back of the saw closer to the handle of the multi tool body, is stiffer and will be more controllable, " it wont flick"! Aug the way to go. Try and break up that fat wood in to a small flat base, and put your shavings on that. If you get a flame it will take. You had a very damp day too, so once you have made the feather sticks, don't leave them out, they are lovely and dry and will pull moisture from any where. Stick them in a pocket, in your coat and use your body heat to keep them dry and warm, it does make a big difference. Excellent call on the Burch bark, and keeping at it ! Attitude is 75% survival mate. Plastic bottle hot water in a pinch yes, but man you cam loosen up some nasty shite doing that so don't make it a habit, clear water or not bud. Try and do an old Pongo thing, which is to make a 24 hr mess tin survival kit. Its amazing what you can get in the tin bud ! Excellent content, really enjoyed the video, keep it coming dude. I would of constructed a tunnel tent from the two survival blankets, and used pine resin to glue the two together, but probably wouldn't of done much different

Good video. Consider changing to AMK Heetsheet Emergency blankets. They are bigger, tougher, and quieter than mylar. Switch from a rain jacket to a military style poncho/tarp. Add a couple of candles. I found the best tinder to take a spark is a cotton ball that has had Vaseline rubbed into it. Pull the ball apart and spark the fibers sticking out. Have fun. I would of taken the water in a stainless water bottle. You could not only easily boil the water but had used it as a hot water bottle during the night.

Great video I would change one space blanket for a thermal bivi bag and add a bic lighter and some bicycle inertube strips great for wet weather fire lighting or a bbq fire lighter the ones with the outer wrapper and a small firstaid kit and some duct tape which is also great for fire lighting as well and some earplugs.

Those pesky foxes! Very nice night, little advice - collect birch bark first and put it inside your jacket in pocket - it will dry in like 2 hours nicely. Also try collecting leaves to put them under your thermal blanket, it will be at least a little more comfy. Thnks for as always awesome video! :)

Here’s another item for your bag dude. I made my own fire lighters - here’s how: get some lint/fluff/fur from your tumble dryers filter, or cotton can be used aswell.. carfully melt some petroleum jelly/Vaseline into a liquid and add a ball of the lint/cotton wool and move it around until it can’t soak up any more liquid and set it aside to solidify. Repeat again and again until the liquid is absorbed. Depending on size these will burn for 30-40mins while you get your kindling going. Never tried lighting one from a flint and blade yet though but they’re really good. Keep them in an air tight tub and obviously away from fire 🔥 🤟🏻

Small fire lighting material like that what i normally do is place the striker on the floor at right angles to it and then drag the ferro rod along the striker ever spark is in contact with the material and a lot less chance of knocking it, but have never done it with such a small ferro rod that way, but worth a try to see if its any better, what would i bring? A big ferro rod, lol.

Also if you are ever in need of tinder use the saw teeth and run it across some wadded up cotton material. If you carry chapstick, Neosporin or Vaseline you can make a fire starter. Also using the blade of the knife you can scrape your jeans pending what they are made of and create enough fibers to do the same thing.

That's exactly, why I love BIC-lighters and a tealight-candle in my pack and some waxed sawdust grill-starters as a backup - never had any issues. @20:25 - boil water for two minutes in a PET bottle? That's not gonna work - at 212°F/100°C PET gets really soft, almost melting. So, some steel container (bottle, cup) should be part of the kit. Stay safe and take care

There are items I have on my person every time I leave the house, and others I do not go to the woods with out even for an hour that would have made this a little better. I always have a 4"x 3/8th" ferro rod, 2 Leatherman tools, and a folding knife on me, as well as a flashlight and a few other things. my bare minimum kit to go outside of town with includes a fixed blade knife, and a second ferro rod, and at bare minimum a water bottle bag with a stainless bottle, and nesting cup, small snack food items, compass, first aid kit, and some shelter items, plus a paracord doughnut with at least 50 feet of cord. if I am going for more than 2 hours, or I am alone, I have an enhanced 10 "C"s kit with 2 50 gallon can liners, a shemagh, water filter, etc. this is a video I did on the 10 "C"s and a lot of variation on each item, and show how it can all fit in a comfortable to carry small pouch. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m51zbLVoq6mwc3k.html

Great job getting the fire going! How many minutes did it take to get the fire, including going to plan B? It was shocking to not see you collecting a bunch of wood and making smaller logs for the fire. I would have tried to make an all night fire by making a 5 layer pyramid of logs with a little dirt in between to pace the burn. Then starting the fire from the top. Some kind of reflector with rocks would have helped too.

A folding saw bigger Firestarter flint a package of super large garbage bags you can cut the garbage bags for arge shingling material and fill some with leaves to use as a comforter or quilt you can use one as a scarf or a hat and scarf combo you can fill another one filled again with leaves or grass combo for a mattress And a metal pot to boil water... More coffee or tea bags More food

I keep a lighter with gorrila tape around it as a fire extender. Living in Arizona clean water is beyond important.

File the ferro rods black patina off, the dust helps catch the eventual spark too, cracking vid man, real world s**t.

Like I said, the Signal is garbage. I would use the Emergency shelter the same way. For the fire, All my survival kit have some sort of Firestarter. With the ferro rod, i would put my striker on the floor very close to the tinder. I would scrape the ferro rod on top of the striker. It would prevent to send the tinder flying everywhere. I would add in front of the fire a barrier/heat reflector. It would prevent the wind from blowing inside the shelter.. For the water, I would carry a military metal canteen bottle with metal cup and stove. I love military gears. They are perfectly made and well thought for the outdoors. I would never carry plastic; they are useless. I would ALWAYS carry Titanium or Stainless Steel but never plastic. Those the things That I would do differently. Thanks

Perhaps the tinder was wet or damp, it needs to be dry.

Watched interesting video the guy was into the 1 is none 2 is 1 rule so had 3 of everything his backpack was huge he did a gear lay out it all looked brand new wonder how long before the penny drops?

This video is a perfect example of why a Bic lighter is superior to a ferro rod. In wet conditions it is extremely difficult to start a fire with a ferro rod.

IMO. the Signal is a waste of money and time. How many strikes will you get before you'll hit the plastic holder/ whistle? 5 to 10 strikes at the most? People get also lost for 2 weeks. By then the ferro rod is useless unless you 'll break the whistle. If you lose your knife, you have lost everything also the ability to make fire. My Leatherman Survival kit includes the Wave Plus, the Premium 4 pockets sheath, with a Ferro Rod Exotac with Firestarter, a slim whistle and a mini fishing kit. If I lose my knife, i just lost my knife but not the other essentials. So0mething to think about before investing into it. I did and I'm regretting it big time. Thanks

with as much fatwood that you have you could have started a fire in a downpour, that stuff will pretty much dry any damp material you have on hand. Aint trying to tell ya what you should have done with that fire but scrapings some shavings and a few small pieces of that fatwood would have fixed ya right up.

Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs but you always pull the ferro rod towards for just that reason. So many bushcraft vids make this mistake. Kent survival simon bloke in the woods richard outdoors etc only ones I've seen do it right ironically are the yanks that are ex military.
