We explored the city of Budapest in just 24 hours. We started our daying taking in the views from Fisherman's Bastion and crossed the famous Chain Bridge. We found quirky sites like the Michael Jackson memorial tree and tried traditional Hungarian dishes like goulash. We discovered the unique ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter and tried the potent Hungarian fruit brandy pálinka. We marveled at the magnificent St. Stephen's Basilica before meeting up with friends for a fun craft beer tasting. Budapest was full of surprises and delights that left us shocked by this pearl of the Danube.

You should try visiting Visegrad, it is only 40 km from Budapest.

Always happy when a visitor takes the small effort to learn to pronounce the city's name properly.

The “black tower” is called the hussar tower. It is called the hussar tower cos the little tower sits on the roof of the church like a hussar on his horse. Because it sits on the middle of the roof it had to be built from a light material (usually wood). This particular hussar tower has a red copper cladding to whitstand the weather that’s why it appears to be black. Besides its decorative function it serves as an access point to the middle of the roof in case the roof needs repairing. It also houses the smallest bell in the church which was sounded only when someone (important) passed away :)

We spent 4 days in Budapest in December and loved it. Visited some of the same places. Some of our favorites were the Jewish Quarter, Parliament, and the Central Market ...and of course Christmas Markets.

The small black (or dark brown) tower is called the Hussar Tower. It’s a copper-covered wooden structure added by the architect Schulek and meant to sit on the spine of the roof like a Hussar on his horse.

Not only You where paying the tourist prices but possibly got some "tourist quality" pálinka as well. Pálinka is at least 50% alcohol so yeah it has a kick, but it is made out of fruit so You should be able to smell and taste the fruit.

1:40 Saint Stephen. The state founder. The traditional depiction of King Matthias has a laurel wreath on his head. The reason for the popularity: the last time the country was stable and legally ordered during his reign. After his death, a continuous crisis followed the Turkish wars. His nickname is Righteous. His coat of arms shows a raven holding a ring in its beak. This is the coat of arms of the Hunyadi family. He came from this family. Hungarian churches are live churches, not museums. This is how religious activities happen. This main function always comes before serving tourists. 11:28 I recommend a simple and traditional cocktail. It's not really trendy anymore, but it's extremely refreshing in the summer. This is the fröccs ( cca splash). It has two components: sour wine and carbonated water. Its name depends on the wine-water ratio and the quantity. 11:48 the inventor of the ballpoint pen is Hungarian, László Bíró. There are places where the invention is called biro. 12:59 Being canonized requires more than being a king. There must be some kind of miracle attached to it. In the case of Saint István, the miracle was that his right hand remained intact after his death. It's in the basilica.

I went to Budapest not long after the Berlin wall came down, so over 30 years ago. I recognised lots of the places you went to but it looks much wealthier now - it was all a bit run down looking when I was there but was still beautiful

Hello Cara and Jeremy. Back when I toured Europe, Hungary was behind the "Iron Curtain". I certainly missed out. So beautiful. I did get to Vienna, the other historical imperial capital, but I really should plan a trip to the bits of Europe I missed. I recently saw a Brett Cooper report from Budapest, but I preferred this one. I learned French and German in my English school, but you could not really get a language course in Yorkshire dialect to converse with my nan, but I spoke it at home, so no problem.

12:12 I was at that basilica in 2008 and saw a woman on the grass verge there walking a ferret on a lead (which seemed odd). Only years later did I see 'The Big Lebowski' and realised she was probably a fan of that film, in which some Germans do it.

Ferrets are pretty cool just in general (as long as you don't tangle some raw meat in front of them), and you can train them. I wouldn't say they are very popular pets, but it's not uncommon.

Sadly, if you wanna have the authentic Palinka experience, you probably won't find it at any fancy place in the city. It's supposed to be a strong beverage but that doesn't mean it should taste like alcohol. Good quality home-made stuff is in a completely different league, and you can get that in almost any village across the country. Trick is, you don't go window shopping for it, just try to talk and connect to people, and there's a good chance they will offer to share theirs with you. Or at the very least, they will point you to the right place to get it.

1:10 There is no deeper meaning behind the "black" tower, most gothic cathedrals have them. It is clad in copper because these tiny towers are made of wood, not stone, as the roof structure could not support a heavy stone tower. The wood obviously has to be protected from the elements, hence the copper cladding. As the church has just been renovated and the copper is still relatively fresh, it has already turned from its initial copper-metal sheen to this brown stage. Within a few months or years, it will slowly take on the final turquoise green of old copper, like the green of the Statue of Liberty. This stage then lasts "forever" or at least many decades, until the copper is so thinned by weathering that it has to be renewed again, and American tourists will certainly speculate about the meaning of the "black" tower once again …
