The island of Miyajima is full of wonderful surprises--deer, beautiful nature, and water that's been brewing for 1000 years.

Thank you for showing the beautiful hike to the top… will definitely add it to list for one day. We took the kids for a day trip, bright and early, from Hiroshima in 2014. We saw the gate at slightly high tide, visited the beautiful temple grounds, did some shopping at a shop selling all blue cloth items, had lunch and then being a hot summers day we walked around to the other side to swim at the beach (bay). I love that Josh had a memory and this was your lead. It’s nice not always knowing everything about a place.

What a wonderful video. I’ve been to Miyajima twice now and have yet done the hike/rope way to the top. I really need to make a point of doing it the next time. I’m a bit sad with all the walkways around the Torii gate. Wish you could have had a view of it without all the construction. I know it says not to feed the deer but I would pull some branches from the tree and feed them to the deer. Also, highly recommend staying at one of the few Ryokans on the island. It is amazing to be there after everyone leaves on the last ferry. You can get some amazing photos at night and also early in the morning before the first ferry arrives. Did you know there is also another mini Torii gate in the water if you walked in the opposite direction from the ferry terminal. Definitely not as impressive but just kinda neat to see. Merry Christmas to you both. Can’t wait to see what Christmas was like for you both. Also I hope you don’t forget to do Fukubukuro shopping early Jan 1. I don’t know if it is just a Tokyo thing or if they do it all across Japan but definitely try to find out about it if they are doing it wherever you might be on Jan 1.

thanks for your message!! we noticed the walkways and work being done and were actually worried that we wouldn't be able to see the tori gate at all, but heard that it was at the tail end when we were visiting, so glad we got to see it :) love the idea of staying on the island at night! we had hoped to do the same, but since reservations were full (and we're pretty last minute planners 😂) we ended up staying just off of the ferry on the other side at a really beautiful guest house!

Please feed the Miyajima deer when visiting, the government are deliberately starving them to death. Please be sensible, deer can eat apples, blueberries, grapes, oats, pears, all you can get from local supermarkets when visiting Hiroshima.
