Please do a comparison between the pro 16c 32 UM vs. the max 24c 32UM. I think it would be very interesting to see how the most powerful pro configuration stacks up against the weakest max.

I think the performance would be very similar. Just in some very unique situations might one anticipate a difference i.e. if you’re running multiple video apps or video edits then the doubled video processors might make a difference. For most folks the majority of their work is CPU based and there should be no or only a very small difference (ie at max bandwith the Max will be faster but will you ever notice it I doubt it)

I have had the 16 inch with 24c with 32GB ram for a couple weeks and it is great so far. Zero issues. Did some comparisons against my 2019 Intel I7 3.2GHZ Mini in FCP. Exports and rendering are 4-7 times faster. Happy with it!

Have you guys thought that we still need some updates to get the best performance out of the 32cores? These are the results so far but I bet they are still polishing the software for the new chips and they will eventually get close to the performance per core of the 24c model.

24 GPU cores is the sweet spot for the MacBook thermal envelope. I expect the 32 cores M1 Max to shine on the 27" iMac when it gets released with higher TDP.

Can we get a similar test with the 24 core M1 Max (14 inch variant) ? Also, re-running the tests with fans set to max (TG Fan) will help determine if the performance is held back due to aggressive thermal management or if there's another bottleneck in the 32 core M1 Max performance. Anandtech posted an article claiming the fabric speeds were capped at ~ 200 GB/s, so it's totally possible that the M1 Max 32 core may have a design limitation.

when everybody was busy testing 14" I really needed to somebody who did a comparison on the 16" models, in fact I was interested in buying 16" 24 core , but this is the first review that actually do a test after 2 months .. I am so happy that I trusted my guts and take 16-24 right away thinking was the best bet, thanks Max for the testing. I guess like somebody else already said, that the 32 core will get major improvements with software opt. in the future. but this will not increase the need to buy a 32 core anyway for 99% of people. so if you are wondering which model 24 core for video editing is awesome.

Weird question, but with respect to the ‘high power mode’, do you need to be plugged in to the magsafe for it to be recognised, or is it sufficient for it to be plugged into USB-C from a doc or monitor? A doc or monitor isn’t as much power, hence my question. Thank you.

The only reasonable comparison can be 32c 14” vs 24c 16”. You get a bigger screen, better sound, better battery life and almost the same performance. The price is not significantly higher if we compare 16” 24c vs 32c. Especially taking into account the total price. The difference is about 5%. I would go for 16” 32c only.

My take away from your results is that the major component of the performance limitations you are seeing are related to thermal envelope restraints, especially in the 14" model. But something about the 24 vs 32 GPU tests hint at something else, possibly internal system bus saturation issues related to the extra 8 GPU cores in the 16" 32 GPU core model. These results may also be related to the system bus extension off chip to reach the memory chips. Even though those memory chips are mounted on the same ceramic substrate, the parasitic capacitance and inductance characteristics of the system bus extension into that ceramic substrate may be slowing down the overall bus performance slightly which would show up as slightly reduced system performance caused by the increased demand for data from the 32 GPU configuration vs. the demand from the 24 GPU configuration. Not sure how you could devise a test to measure the impact of the system bus performance characteristics between the two configurations. It will be interesting to see how the migration to M2 and M3 variations will affect your test results between the higher and lower GPU configurations due to the inherent performance difference from the current 5nm, the enhanced 5nm and the 3nm processes that we expect will be used to implement the successive M series chip generations.

Great video! I’d love to see a Pro vs Max matchup on the 16-inch (ideally 32GB ram), for strictly CPU intensive tasks. This is especially interesting for i.e. audio production, where quiet operation is preferred. Could the Pro be a better choice considering thermals, being cooler under same load? Are there any benefits with higher memory bandwidth in CPU heavy scenarios?

Given the current wait times, the 32 core is only $200 more. This won't matter when both are readily available as walk in purchases, but for now, the standard 32GB/1TB/32 core is probably the easiest Max to find available.

Great video! Man i had a question for you, is it the power supply limiting the performance of the 14" model? Because I don't want to spend much more to go 16", and don't want that bigger size too. But I do want that performance. :D Would lvoe to hear your feedback, nobody at Apple has been able to help or assist with what I've pointed out to them after watching this. I ended up returning my 14" 24core gpu/32gb ram model for the 32 core gpu/ 64gb ram model. Hope you can run another test and see if it was jsut the power supply unit, or what??

He already did the comparisons. 24 core 14 inch is better bang for the buck then the 32 core 14 inch. You get most of the performance with longer battery life, because the 24 core is more power efficient than the 32 core, so it doesn't throttle as much.

I have the 14” 24-core and it throttles but less than 32-core. Asitop shows the initial 1297, but it drops to 1087 stress tested. 16” is still king but I am enjoying my 14” and will be keeping it.

I wish one of these test included the 32 core model under a computer fan underneath AND a second test with it lifted to see if the heat dissipates better to see whether the performance can be reached while sacrificing the noise reduction. Wood is known to insulate heat. It looks like his table may be made out of wood. Thanks for the video.

interesting that the game GPU test needs 24gb of ram of 64 available on the 14 inch and only 14 GB on the 16 inch with 32gb available. Same test different needs according to installed ram? I also think the 32 gpu upgrade for the price is worth it, throttling or not, it can make a difference for optmised soft or when emulation is struggling hard.

Now that we've seen that the 14" 32 is hobbled by over heating, this video leaves me wondering if the 14" 24core would be better? My requirement is that i get 32GB Ram. For $250 more I might as well get the MAX 24core. However, this video now leaves me wondering, should i get the 16" or the 14" My GUESS is that the 14" 24core would perform well possibly better that the 14" 32core simply because of the throttling on the 32.

As of now, on Apple online store in China, 24 core on both 14 and 16 inch arrive estimated 2-4 weeks later than already long 3-4 weeks waiting time for 16 and 32 core on 14 and 16 inch. So I ordered 32 core 16inch a couple of days ago.It will arrive on January 12-20 estimated time. I couldn’t wait any longer as I need it for work. If 24 core is available as soon as 16 and 32 core, I will definitive have 24 core, because I’m set to get 32gb, so upgrading from 16 to 24 core is like a stea. You get twice the encoders and decoders and 400gb bandwidth and more monitor support. However, it seems Tim Cook and Apple don’t want me to steal from them that easily. 🤔

This is why I decided to get the 16" 30-core M2. It made sense to me and this video seem to back that up.

I'm glad I went with that exact model, 16in 24gpu 32ram. Got it last Saturday. Really love it. I had the same exact result in the Aztec benchmark! I'm so happy with my purchase.

I did the exact same specs. Got mine a couple weeks ago. Saved me in meeting some deadlines I had cause it could handle some workloads that my old computer couldn't and it arrived just on time to save me XD. Let's gooooooo hermano!!!!!

@@MikeyMoran No complain, I love it, great device. For battery life, it's amazing when you use it for basic stuff, around 10-12 hours. For more intensive work, I really don't know. I'm always plug-in when using Logic or Pixelmator pro. Hope you enjoy it! The screen is just perfect! so good!

I already have the 16 inch maxed out 32 cores and don’t have any thermal issues with it. I also did a thermal pad mod(putting thermal pads between heat pipe and chassis) and the thermal decrease is insane.

How’s it going? I’m waiting on the same model, but part of me is wondering why didn’t I get 32 core as it wasn’t much more $. Is there any time you’ve felt it buckle under stress?

24c is the best value based on how the thermals and throttling currently work. Also, better battery life. Obviously, 32c is fastest in practically all situations.

Great choice, LTT pointed out that the 32 core was throttling in the 14 inch. Also 24 core is much more affordable.

At first I had buyers remorse on the 14 24c, but after all the benchmarks and tests, I think I actually got the most bang for the buck in a really portable laptop.
