240z LS swap? Steps to get ya one

A lovely 1973 Datsun 240z made its way into my garage. The car was a blast, but the 2.4 6 cylinder with triple webers was not cutting it for me. Hmmm maybe I should put that LY6 I have on an engine stand in there..... Here is the result, and a couple key things to know going into a swap like this. Craigslist is your friend!
P.S. the webcam didn't seem to like the exhaust, it sounds much different in person, my other vid of it idling captures it closer.

Headers on this one, original manifolds on my 280z. Take a look at my videos, I got one just for the exhaust showing what I did.

Really looking into doing this with a 5.3 and single turbo. How long did the swap take you? Also are you still running the stock rear end?

Logan Smith It was about a month for this car, but some people take a year. Rear is stock but I have a couple surprises in the works that will change that.

Alright. Sounds good. Ill hopefully be starting mine soon and ill stay tuned to see what you have in mind for the rear. I'm thinking of a R200 then a ford 8.8" if and when it gives out.

awesome video, how much cutting was involved to get it to fit? or with those mount kits, it sits perfectly like that?

With the kit I used in this one there is some cutting (trimming really) that needs to happen to the transmission mount, and two holes need to be drilled. Otherwise no cutting, which is nice since it preserves the original car a bit more.

Its a pretty weak car, could use a cage and some strut tower bracing. As long as your not launching the car hard on some sticky tires it doesn't matter though.

I’m doing a 5.0 302 swap in a 240z and I’m worried about the rear end. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do about it since it must take some modifications. Idk if I should r200 swap it or 8.8 ford rear with cv axles. Or even an 240sx rear subframe swap? Either other way sounds like A lot of time and confusion. Need help.

Run the stock rear, it should hold up fine unless you put some fat slicks on it. Mine was holding up fine with 400 lb/ft on 400hp. If you do feel the need to swap the rear do the Invincible Extremes super 8.8 swap

@@predaR6 Most engine swaps are going to be about the same amount of work. Their is swap kits for the RB20/25 for a 240 as well as the LS and others. I always suggest the LS because its more power for less money.

And the 240z are so expensive aswel for like a incomplete rust everywhere 11k and for a good 1 that stil needs work 17k😅

I have a 280zx, the engine is nearly the same as the earlier Z cars, only fuel injected. I believe the engine bay has the same dimensions

How does the car handle with the iron block? Do you really notice the extra weight?

I don't have much track time to give a professional answer, but the steering weight feels the same as when it had the stock l24. That said I would always recommend an aluminum block and wish I had one.

Dude make more vids your slacking lol what did you have to get the ls3 intake to work ? I just got a ly6 so I kinda need to know haha

I know, been running into many a roadblock on my current venture. The ls3 intake will bolt right on since the Ly6 also has square port heads. I just swapped my truck throttle body on it, but I also had to buy an map sensor that would bolt to the ls3 intake ($13) and a ls1/ls2 to ls3/ls7 sensor harness adapter to be able to plug it in. You will then need to re-tune your ecm for the new bigger injectors, and for the new MAP sensor. All that said, if you can fit the stock LY6 intake you should keep it, it flow amazingly.

Hey thanks probably going to try to get a ls3 with fuel rails and injector. Good in info on just replacing the sensor instead of modding the intake. Thanks again and keep up the good vids even if you voice over vids a great

Hey I just got a ls3 intake with everything with it . Can I just use the ls3 throttle body instead of my ly6 throttle body ? I have done any wiring yet and still collecting parts.

The camshaft is pretty big and has a good amount of overlap. Was making it a bit smelly, and the 240z likes to pull exhaust into the cabin when the windows are rolled down. The cheap high flow cats helped a lot

CX Racing headers. Mine had leaks in it when I got it though and CX wouldn't fix it or give me any money back to fix it myself so buyer beware.

I used the cxracing ones, but I don't recommend cxracing. The headers had a pinhole leak in the collector and cxracing wouldnt fix them. Now that I have a turbo I changed all that. Check my turbo videos for details.

4 1/2" Speedhut gauges. GPS speedo with the highbeam and turn signal lights, they let you customize the face with the color and font you want (I think I used the default styles for everything), then the tach is the one with a shift light.

Yes, but only because my ECM wouldn't output a speedometer signal. Its pretty specific to my exact model, 07 truck with 6l80e. You can tell by checking in HPtuners if you see a speedometer reading after doing all the appropriate config.

On this car I used the CX Racing kit, comes with motor mount, trans mount, and exhaust. Exhaust was highly disappointing because it has a leak in the header they wouldn't fix. Trans mount I had to modify slightly to work with the TR6060 I used (kit is for T56), and also needed a custom driveshaft for it. My other build is all custom, and uses the donor vehicles driveshaft that is shortened.
