On May 29th this year, I was lucky enough to be invited to join Alan, Tina and Richard of NB Wobbly, to travel in convoy across The Wash with Jo, Michael and Lorna on NB Perseverance. This is quite an adventurous crossing for a narrowboat as they're designed only for the flat calm waters of the canals or small rivers - and The Wash is pretty much open sea.
See the others' versions of the day here:

In 1988, I crewed a narrowboat from the Netherlands to Teddington lock. A totally hair-raising journey which took a week. We actually crossed the North Sea at night! Crossed shipping lanes dodging supertankers, container ships and ferries. It's a tale most would not believe, but it's completely true.

What a thoroughly exhilarating journey. Please ignore the negative comments. Yes, this might be a bit of a risk but the water is very shallow, you all have life jackets, and you have an experienced pilot which will cover your insurance. Soo good on you! I wouldn’t do it myself but it was interesting to see and it shows how much Narrowboats can put up with. So well done!

My grandfather once told me that he took a narrow boat across the channel for a day trip and back again. I took it all with a pinch of salt because he always had such wild stories to tell us. However the worrying thing is that they often proved to be true.

As an ex commercial fisherman on the west coast of Canada I certainly know that the excitement of transiting through boiling narrow passages that plow you sideways without warning and the near frantic wheel cranking in order to get back on track. A bump on the bank like that is nothing to be embarrassed about given the maneuverability of a narrow boat. Great video as always.

The first (and hopefully only) time I had to bleed a marine diesel was on a small sailboat near Port Townsend. There was no wind, so I had to drop anchor and row the tender into town to purchase fuel. After which it took me the better part of four hours and multiple phone calls to the local marine shop before I was able to get the engine bled correctly and able to start up again. Which is a rather lengthy way of saying I'm extremely impressed by the Wobbly Boat captain managing to get the entire operation done that quickly. Kudos!

It's a shame more of our Canals weren't maintained. I'm on the east coast near the Raritan river, the old Delaware and Raritan Canal crosses NJ to the PA border, having been a route from the coal fields to New York Harbor via the Arthur Kill. Sadly it's locks have all been turned to dams and two large portions of it paved over for highways. I've biked the old mule path along side it a few times but it'd be something to be able to experience it on a boat like this.

If your new approach to vlogging produces this level of storytelling, then take as much time as you need to produce them. Really spectacular! Makes me want to go reread Melville and Conrad and Patrick O'Brian. The drone segment was especially lovely -- and shocking to see a narrowboat hauled up on a remote beach. Maybe it was time for you to get out of Hobbiton and have some adventures.

I have been missing the chug-chug-chug of a narrowboat's diesel's engine. You don't realize what you have been missing until the sounds break through the silence! Here in the states if things go awry we usually say things are going south (down the drain)!

As a sailor accustomed to having a deep keel under me, this would be a fine and easy jaunt. Being in a narrowboat with a flat bottom, I'd be chewing my fingernails all the way. Well done staying calm!

A short history of NB Wobbly would be an interesting addition to this video. It seems to be an "older" boat or at least old-fashioned. You may have already covered this in your earlier video but I've forgotten.

This video showed up on my list a couple of weeks ago, so I watched it out of curiosity - with no prior interest or specific knowledge in narrowboating, and now I am getting quite addicted to this channel! Thank you for all these fascinating videos, the fantastic commentary and your insight into narrowboating. What comes through is just how important skill, patience and learning from (and gaining) experience are for this activity. I'll stop writing and go back to binge-watching this channel. :)

“Sierra Cosworth car park doughnuts” 😂😂😂 love it. Yet another superb video to add to your collection, David. I’ve watched the whole lot through twice thus far…think I might go for a third time; the kettle just boiled and it’s raining outside. The perfect afternoon accompaniment!

I bet the captains of the other boats were probably pretty confused to look over and see 2 narrowboats in open water LOL

Despite the thumbnail, I didn't expect the pitching of the boats would be quite so dramatic! It's like watching ships in a storm, except not so noisy. Or maybe even worse in a way! But not entirely. I can't believe that broom didn't fall off though. That beach tho! :) I *loved* the ending! XD
