Another great video Buddy, thank you! I recently acquired one of these for a song because it has issues like this. Turned out to be the batteries were dead and main encoder needed to be replaced. Thanks so much for putting out great content! I have a ham radio repair business and your videos show me common radio issues with makes and models I might not have had cross my bench yet. Helps keep bills down for customers. I only do it part time as a service to our fellow hams. Helps keep folks on the air. Have a great day and thank you for keeping repair alive!

I also have 2 of these radios, one works great except for the auto tuner and one for parts. Used it for my main radio years ago. Previous owner installed a roofing filter that made the sound muffled so I removed it and return the unit to stock conditions. Very nice sounding radio but never could it beat my TS-830s. Thanks Buddy for another great video. Love these old radios!

That TS-830 is a hard one to beat!. Thanks Lyle

These modern rigs are no doubt quite capable, but the old steam-and-coal powered boat anchors were pretty robust and reliable too. Always a pleasure to see a experienced pro work their magic.

Perfect timing! I had watched the "down the rabbit hole" video and wondered why you never did a part 2. Now I know! I'm going to try the EPROM pin clean tip and see if it helps my TS-940SAT. Love your vids, I've learned a lot over the years!

Thanks, hope it helps

My 440s developed the same dot problem. Cleaned the pins on the eprom and started working again. A service bulletin came out on that radio to have the eprom soldered directly to the board, eliminating the socket, which solves the problem. Later serial numbers had this done. I knew it wasn't the conductive Sony Bond issue, because mine was a refurbished unit from Jahnke Electronics.

Another tip, recap the power supply board (small board above the two large main capacitors) friends Kenwood had noise on the ps rails, affected receive. After replacing the pregnant capacitors, receive became much quieter.
@TheRadioShop3 жыл бұрын
Better yet, replace the whole board, these are a disaster waiting to happen.

Hi Buddy. Please check out the advantages of the K6IOK power supply upgrade kit. Many TS-940S owners, including me, have adopted it and saved this fine transceiver from its almost inevitable self- destruction. I am not associated with the designer and vendor of the upgrade kit but am a big believer in it. Thanks for the fantastic videos and generous sharing of your expertise.

I will check it out for my TS-940s. Thanks!

Ditto for the Compudigital power supply replacement...they also have memory batteries and S-meter/sub-display LED replacement kits available as well. The AVR unfortunately board is a disaster waiting to happen. Interestingly the two big filter caps came out and showed just fine on my ESR meter but still glad I did all the mods...the radio should be good for another 30+ years now. BTW, there's a great Groups dot io user group for Kenwood TS-930/940's; search for "kw-ts940s". Several excellent Kenwood techs hang out on that group. 73 - Dino KLØS

The power supply replacement is kind of steep at more than $300.. What problem does the replacement solve?
@PapasDino3 жыл бұрын
@@RadioWhisperer IF the main supply fails what happens is that you put 40VDC throughout the transceiver and fry a bunch of stuff. The original power supply assembly runs very hot even when only in the receive mode. The server rack style supply that replaces the main transformer and associated circuitry is meant to loaf along providing 28VDC to the finals as well as the custom AVR replacement board with separate switching regulators for all the other associated required voltages. Bottom line is that it's meant to prevent catastrophic failure and prolong the life of the transceiver. I bought my 940S new in 1986 and if I amortize the cost over all those years and add the supply mod it's really not that expensive...the 940S still today has one of the best receivers around. Subscribe to the Groups dot io group and read the messages related to the replacement and I think you may come to the conclusion that it is in fact a worthwhile investment, to say nothing of simply adding to the resale value of the rig as they still bring pretty good prices. YMMV but I don't regret having done the replacement.

Buddy, I had a problem very much like that after installing a 1.2GHz module in a Kenwood TS-790A. The issue was only on 1.2 GHz. I got a copy of the service manual and found the voltages were off inside the module. After realignment the issue went away and has not returned, yet.

I own one of these 940's. I have an issue with intermittent S meter is all. will that EEPROM affect just the S meter? Love the video. Always learnin' me something.
@TheRadioShop3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, Most of the time when the eprom has an issue there are many things that happens other than the s-meter. How ever if just the s-meter is not working there is a few things to look for. S-meter adjustment pot dirty, Fast / slow / off switch defective, check the capacitors on the back of the IF board. They may be held down with a brown looking glue (Sony Bond). Lift the capacitors and remove all traces of that stuff.

Hello Buddy I have a TS 940s problem maybe you can help with. on 40 mtr I was getting good swr 110w out since I purchased it 2 mo ago. Now its over 3 to1 and 20 watts out. I connected a dummy load and it shows perfect 120w out. as all the rest of the bans check out the same. I have 20 and 40mtr dipoles. I went all new with the 40m wire coax and 1:1 Balun. Same readings 20w out 3.5 to 1. My 20m inverted v gets almost 1:1 Any suggestions. Thanks Jerry
