We're in Rockland, Maine to look at a really great value sailboat for sale - a Whitby 42 Ketch. Now this one needs some TLC (refrigeration, electronics to name a few things) but for this size you wont find many sailboats for sale at this price. A recently rebuilt engine makes this pretty intriguing to us.

Great boat. With her layout she would make a great cruiser for extended passages. With a good refit and refresh she could shine like a new penny. There are far worse "project" boats for far more money.

I do love the Natures Head. I am so happy I choose a self made composting toilet around the Free Range Design Urine separator. No unnatural smells, easy to keep clean and now there will be a mandatory government seal on the black water dump valve in the Netherlands, I am not getting nervous like my neighbors.

I've commented on your channel numerous times before...in fact, I comment every time RubeTube makes an recommendation. Well, here we go again. Looking at your body language and to some extent your vocabulary it's fairly apparent that we're nearly the same age. Both sides of my family (Morgan City, Louisiana, USA) were in the commercial marine industry with my great grandfather having some of the very first seismograph boats operating in the Gulf of Mexico. I had (and still do) have relatives running inland tows, offshore ship assist tugs, offshore tows, oilfield service vessels, and commercial fishing trawlers. I freely admit that I do not know everything there is to know about boats. But I will say that I know more than most people. Having said that, I want to try once more to get you to understand that there are other types of sail boats besides ketches. Yes, it's true. There's even one or two other styles of sail boat that are uglier than the ketch although I understand how hard it can be to believe that. For pure beauty I'll take a schooner any time. The antique overtones of a gaff rig really enhances the looks of a vessel. The simplest of all sail boats, the catboat, is hard to beat even though not the best at sailing. The junk rig can be very difficult to beat when it comes to aesthetics AND for simplicity in sailing. What about the longship of the Viking explorers? The latter boat design I mentioned actually has provided me with the first use I have ever had for a ketch (or a yawl). When time for an authentic Viking funeral, instead of burning a genuine gorgeous longship, conduct the funeral ritual on the longship, then move the body of the fallen hero to a ketch or yawl, and burn one of those hideous water logs in lieu of a real vessel with character and history behind it.
@YachtHunters
@YachtHunters 9 ай бұрын
It is hard to beat the beauty of a schooner or the romance of a gaff rig.. totally agree. Cat boats here in New England are also a delight to look at and to sail. I think the favoring of a ketch/yawl must be traced back to an early impression... and it's highly subjective. If it floats, it gets a '10' ;) no exceptions! Really interesting to read that you got to witness a proper viking funeral... we should all be so lucky. cheers, LA

Cool channel. I’m glad I came across it. That looks like a great live aboard restoration. Hopefully, she’ll be back in the ocean sailing around the world soon. Thanks for the video. I hope someday to purchase a cheap boat and retire on it and sail around the world. I just moved to and work in San Diego now. I’m doing it out of my van to save money. The pay at the new job is pretty good for what I do, but the cost of living here with rent is ridiculous, so the only way to save is not get caught up in rent and utilities. The weather couldn’t be better for van life. I figure if I save one thousand dollars a month for 15 years, I’ll have a small budget of 180K for getting a boat, outfitting it and setting sail around the world. 6 more years after that, and I’ll be social Security age (I’m 46 now). I think Social Security, if it is still around then, would be great to maybe pay a slip fee somewhere cheap, if there is such a place. I found lately that its best to make things happen earlier than later. Life just goes too quickly. Best to work hard, save money and scratch that sailing around the world bit off the bucket list before its too late.

Nice tour! I’d love to debate composting toilets as they completely ignore the reality of liquids, and create problems no one addresses. I suspect they won’t be considered legal in some circles because of this Heres a great opportunity for someone to solve a problem I suggest a hybrid (which is a cat box and leaving your plumbing alone) or as I call it, a pretend composting toilet, which would pass any inspection and not bring up unanswerable questions Someone could redesign the composting toilet to incorporate a regular heads holding tank for liquids, but so far, no one has, everyone’s too thrilled to “get rid of the holding tank”

It was an easy difficulty rating but still, CQ gets extras points for costume, so 4.75/5 from the Canadian judge 😊. This is the kind of boat I’m looking for. Wish it was on the Pacific NW. Great episode I love the technical detail you two go into, as I am a paraplegic I am always on the lookout for a sailboat that is relatively easy for single-handed sailing and liveaboard. Center cockpits are my preference and rear Captains quarters with head. I have modified a few boats but have yet to tackle a full liveaboard. Keep up the good work and hope to bump wine glasses someday. Relaxedjack.

Nice boat. Great layout below. Not sure about the low walkthrough to the aft cabin. But overall quite nice. A few bits of fix it juice needed as the boat seems solid with good bones.

Price may not be right considering how much a refit will cost, but price is probably low enough you could get into it and do the refit over time! This one is big enough for mom and the cherubs and would be great for the place most boats spend the majority of their lives...in port, while being fun to sail as well!

a man after my own mind...precisely not every boat has to be refinished to like new before you can go sailing

Captain Q, you seem to have an affinity towards ketches and yawls? Which do you like better of the two?

He's stated several times that he prefers a yawl for the sheer versatility of one. In my opinion, he's a man of great wisdom, and impeccable taste. But, maybe that's just because I prefer cutter rigged yawls, myself.
