Easy summary: IT = good rate with a lot of power. Good pick up and should be easier to advance than other rates ie HM (like 5% pick up for 2nd) Radio side: deals with comms you will start off in message center formatting and delivering messages. Deals with a lot of crypto too (good luck) ADP (networking side): have fun doing trouble tickets NETSEC (network security): making sure people aren’t watching porn on the network As you can see it seems like a favorite one

@rickisantos7547 Netsec and ADP. Comms can give you a good job but there's less variety. Like if you're got at SHF communication, you can work with the Navy, merchant marines, or maybe a comms listening stations. Probably a government job. Which is good. But ADP and Netsec you could work with anyone with a network in their company. Obviously the government, but also McDonald's, Walmart, pharmaceutical companies, etc.

As someone who has been doing IT across state in the Civilian World. There is always something new. Sometimes major or sometimes minor but that's the beauty of it. If you're a problem solver, I say go for it. Don't look at just for the now but for the future as well. Thank you for this video, I am currently going on 3 years being in IT. I passed my ASVAB shortly before Christmas 2021. I sign my Contract in January 2022 and I am excited to see what opportunities I have unlocked for myself. Wish me luck!

@@CHUYx-py6hn Oh I'm terrible at math too. I had to take Math 101 twice when I was in college. And in high school, I was always in remediation. But I passed and I had zero prep or studying because I didn't have anyone to ask at the time. So studying for it would definitely extremely useful I think. I don't really remember the exact content of the test but knowing how to read and do word problems from what I remember, is probably the biggest thing. Then knowing how to able to do the basic equations and how they might fit into larger more complicated equations. Think of it like an type of SAT or ACT Standardized Test. I wouldn't say it's the hardest but not every section of the exam is relevant to ITs. I guess for us who are bad at math it was relatively daunting. But you'll do well with a little effort. :)

Hey Aaron! Thank you so much for posting about Navy IT. I have signed a 4 year contract with the navy and will be auto E3 due to college credits. In your own opinion is it worth getting an IT online degree while serving active duty? I think that I would like to have the option of having a great civilian job or becoming an officer IP in the Navy. Also, how does tuition assistance work ? how can you apply for IT certifications and when do you find out about what certifications you get when you are given you command? Thank you so much for your content!!!

My apologies for the lateness. It would be worth getting any continuing education while enlisted. Not only just IT certs but apprenticeships. As for the ease, some commands make it easier than others. My current command gave me a waiver for SEC+ test and class. Others will tell you to do it on your own time. USMAP is one other avenue for preparing to get out as I let's you log your hours. As for the tuition assistance, it changed recently so unfortunately I am unable to explain it as I do not know myself. I'll see if I can do a video about it.

I think it would be worth getting a C School with a 6 year contract. Also see if you can work becoming a pushbutton E4 into the contact if you can. I'm not really sure how only having college credits vs having a degree with getting that auto advance works so you'll have to ask them about that. Getting a head as quick as you can is more money sooner so why not? Whether you're staying in you getting out, as long as you don't mind going to school for a little longer in the beginning, it would be helpful once you get to the fleet.

@AaronPaulIbarrola
@AaronPaulIbarrola 4 жыл бұрын
93 is really good. I got like a 70 something when I took that practise ASVAB. IT is usually available. But if it's not don't take no or another rate for an answer. Be adamant about it even if you have to come back another time or take a back up rate and keep coming back until you get it. I heard both scenarios working for people. As long as you don't get tricked or pressured into taking a rate you don't want because that's years of your life right there. I'm not too sure about using the ASVAB score to get a regular job, if that's what you're asking but I'm sure you can try. Fluff it up in your resumé because that you got whatever score on the ASVAB. But with a score that high you should be able to get most, if not any, rate. Good luck and stay safe.

Question, I've heard a lot from sailors in other rates that IT's tend to do stuff like browse Reddit and watch Netflix whilst on the job. Is this accurate? Which also leads to my next question, is the wifi on ships, (especially when underway) good enough to use the internet to at least be able to use messaging apps like Skype or Discord?
@AaronPaulIbarrola
@AaronPaulIbarrola 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the command. My ship didn't block Reddit and KZfaq but Netflix was blocked. But at my next command, Reddit and Netflix was blocked and KZfaq wasn't. And at my current command KZfaq and Reddit are blocked but Netflix isn't. Its weird, random, and probably evershifting. Because 4chan wasn't blocked on my ship for the longest time until someone got caught downloading... questionable memes. Then it got blocked. Reddit might have gotten blocked too after that. But its usually at the discretion of the IT's what certain things get blocked and who it gets blocked (or unblocked) for Lol For the ship WiFi, I've never been a ship that uses WiFi so I'm not a hundred percent sure. But to my knowledge it doesn't sound like its strong enough for those types of apps. I'll ask around tomorrow at work though, see if anyone has been on a ship with WiFi and get back to you on that.

@@AaronPaulIbarrola No problem man! Just one last question: how often do you travel? I know that may vary wildly but would you say IT's have a much better chance to see foreign countries because I've heard IT's can end up stationed in one spot for years or never even leave the states for their entire enlistment. But on the other hand, I've heard about IT's travelling a ton and seeing plenty of places and I can't just seem to find out what's more likely.
@AaronPaulIbarrola
@AaronPaulIbarrola 3 жыл бұрын
@@SomethingSpecial. I can't really speak for every rate but on the ship in Hawaii, I didn't travel more anymore than anyone else. The ship deployed to places like Thailand, Isreal, and Singapore so I was able to go there as did everyone on the ship. When I was a stationed at Yokosuka Naval Hospital, since it is in charge of clinics in Korea, Singapore, Diego Garcia, and other parts of Japan, I was able to travel to all those places pretty commonly. Right now I'm stationed at Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic or NCTAMS LANT which is in Norfolk Virginia. I'm only gonna be here for one year and I haven't traveled anywhere. So I can tell, if someone were here for three year orders then they would be just as likely to not be traveling anywhere for work for the whole time. Although there is a possibility a sailor could become an Temporary Duty Assignment (TAD) or Individual Augmentee (IA) meaning they get sent somewhere as support. That's usually situational though.

Stuck between choosing IT or LS.. any advice
@AaronPaulIbarrola
@AaronPaulIbarrola 3 жыл бұрын
I would say it really depends if you want a job as in computer repair, network engineering, secret information guard, and radio communications vs if you want a job as a store clerk, inventory manager, delivery and shipping, and post officer manager. There's more to both jobs than that and also more nuanced but that's pretty much a chunk of what both jobs can be like. Both jobs translate to jobs in the civilian world to their civilian counterparts but IT will help you if you plan on working somewhere with a secret or top secret clearance. However, that doesn't bar prior LS's from the military from getting those clearances later and working IT jobs. You'd just have to work at it after the military or on your own time. An LS's I know got out and is working for a shipping company. He said it's exactly the same job. So that's something to consider. In the end, it's really up to you. Both jobs have their ups and downs. It's all about preference. What both jobs probably have in common is angry customers. Either the customer will be angry at you because their computer is broken, usually due to their own fault, or the customer will be angry the parts they ordered are not here yet, because of the limitations of mail getting from one part of the world to another. I hope that helps. If you want a more in depth dive in LS just ask some questions and I'll ask our LS in my command. Good luck.

Is there a difference in IT and IT/ATF (is cause I signed a 6 year instead of 4)
@AaronPaulIbarrola
@AaronPaulIbarrola Жыл бұрын
The difference is that for IT/ATF, you get more schooling and get an NEC (Navy Enlisted Classification), a specialization. It takes a little bit more money for them to school you, and you are in school longer, so to make up for it, they get to have you for two more years. It equals to about the same, maybe a little more, out in the fleet, but you do get advanced automatically at the completion of your schooling before you get sent to the fleet. Higher rank faster means bigger paycheck faster. The only downside is that it is two more years total. But whether you enjoy your time in and reenlist and/or learn something useful and get out eventually is up to you. For context, I did six years back in 2013, and I'm still in.

Even today, I make jokes about needing to count with my fingers still. So I get the struggle. For the most part the math was really only in like subnetting and such. Since I have been working as an actually IT, the only math I've had to do was for logistics like inventory and prices. And at that point, a calculator is your best friend. For school I just had to come for extra help and do study groups. You'll be fine as long as you don't slack of. They are not out to fail you. It costs them a lot of money to put you through. So they will help you out for sure.

Some people don't see that as a resource but it definitely is. You can probably also join the public Facebook group "US Navy IT's". Sometimes people have questions on there and they get answered. There is also a Private group "US Navy Information Systems Technicians" but this one they vet profiles if they have proof they actually been in. The main thing is reviewing the material they teach you hopefully they emphasize on what exactly is testable. That's the real thing. But every little thing helps. Quizlet might help too but only if someone before you bothered to upload questions. Or you could do it to help yourself and your classmates. Don't waste your off time, even if its just an hour after class or on the weekends, study everyday.

Hey Aaron, what do you think your job will be outside the military with your IT experience
@AaronPaulIbarrola
@AaronPaulIbarrola 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. I can always try for IT since I am socially networking right now so people know me. Before I joined I was working towards the medical field so that's an option too. I'm pretty on the fence either way.

@@Coinz8 You should be good. It's nothing crazy. I've pretty much been in remedial math since elementary school and had to take math 101 twice in college. The subnetting isn't crazy and that wasn't the part most people had trouble with. From what I remember, the instructors really helped you out, one because it would look bad on them if people failed, two because for about a week that's all your doing for like 8 hours a day so you'll definitely get it.

@@Coinz8 Not at all. I was a dialysis tech before I joined. Medicine and Information Technology are as different to each other as can be. Their purpose is to build you from the ground up. They understand that not everyone is adept at everything or has experienced everything. Since, standardized tests like the SAT and ASVAB only really scale you on "common core" subjects, more comprehensive subjects just need to be drilled. Just think, they recruit from all walks of life in US and her territories. More than likely, we're just average on the scale for being IT's. But being in the middle somewhere means that there is at least half of all people who are just not as good. You'll be fine. You knows, maybe you'll realize this is what you were supposed to be good at all along.

I have bad credit. Will this stop me from going with the IT rate?
@Skaggs666
@Skaggs666 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on how bad and if you’re actively trying to correct it. ITs need to be qualified for a secret clearance. Bad credit is an indicator of your ability to maintain personal responsibility and integrity. Also, if you’re experiencing financial hardship, you’re more likely to be open to bribes from foreign entities. It’s best to make sure you’re paying your debts even if it’s just minimum payments and you’re not showing late payments.

Vishal Greene it’s 3 months if you get 4 years but much longer for 6. It is actually easy and they’ll help you if you struggle. Fleet returnees live at nicer barracks on nas instead of Corry and don’t have to march, not a school drop outs just rerates. The area is okay, helps being 21 and having a car.
